As a Korean, I think people in Korea aren’t used to a singer like her. There aren’t really genres in Korea other than what is known as k-pop or folk music. She also makes what she does look so easy which might cause people to be less impressed (ftr, no idea who those ppl are 😂).

According to her, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion really influenced her ( with Mickael Bolton also ). Her favorite album is Music Box by Mariah Carey if I'm not wrong. Sohyang is a very versatile singer, she can also sing Rock, jazz, rap, pop, Western, ballads wonderfully. But she is a gospel singer, who will forever sing for God. Maybe I can suggest you to react to 'Everyone' , 'Bridge over troubled water',

Welcome to the world of Sohyang. Mixed voice G note for her is nothing, I have heard her go up to a C# 6 in mixed voice with amazing clarity and power. I call her the female Dimash, unlike Dimash however, she does all her own arrangements of the songs. She is TRUE Musician, not just a singer.. Incredible Gift.. bye the way she is about 41 in this video, which shows you that her technique is outstanding. She takes great care of her voice. You will never see her strain or push. She just lets it happen. Not too many Singers can belt like that at that age.
Sohyang posted a NEW song dedicated to people suffering from the pandemic. Her version of "Amazing Grace" will change you. The simple fact of her singing "how sweet the sound," requires a thick towel to sop up your inevitable tears.

Absolutely, so tough to choose. Arirang Alone is my favorite with Bridge and Everyone ties for second.
There’s a fancam version of this performance where you can hear the lead violin post produced but her vocals are like 99% untouched sauf vol. adjustments etc… she’s just so wonderful!
I am a pianist, not a vocalist. I discovered So Hyang only a week ago. Since then I have watched every RUclips video of her I can find. She has redefined what I considered vocal and performance talent. I've watched so many reaction videos from vocal coaches and singers, but your truly is one of the most genuine and from the heart and soul that have seen. THANK YOU! This arrangement always tears me up a bit. I love the part of unification. Baekdusan is in the far reaches of North Korea, and Hallasan is on the southern most island, Jeju.

David Wilkins For more context, this has been an important song in Korean culture before North Korea even existed! In the song, there is a mention of two hills, one in the northern regions and one closer to the south (ex: Dokdo) and in the song those two hills are “hanging in there” because they have each other. This song is sung from generation to generation and is the unofficial anthem of Korea, uniting both countries and their people as one. It shows that they will always be one in heart and soul. Beautiful
Also some context about SoHyang! She has ovarian cancer and suffered immensely. As a part of a church, the people prayed for her and she recovered. She thought that this recovery was so that she could share her voice, gods gift, with the world but ONLY in ways that were pure and honoring. Not once for the fame (which is why there is so much emotion and drive in her voice). Sadly, her health is still very difficult but I hope she will be okay! Sorry for the long text! She is amazing and so is the song!

This was my first time. And I’m as bowled over as I was the first time I heard Dimash do SOS. WOW. WHAT DID I JUST HEAR!!! I bet she’s stunned vocal coaches all across RUclips, which will be so fun to watch. WOW 🤯
Vocal prowess aside, her musicality is insane. Every performance is like she's taking the audience with her on a journey. I mean that arrangement ??? World-class mastery right there. The ornamentations she added fit so well with the emotions she's conveying and sometimes you just get lost in them and don't even notice her riffs until you listen to it again. Nothing felt out of place. Just the perfect amount. Truly one of a kind.
Another influence for her was Seth Riggs, the vocal coach to Michael Jackson. She often quotes his training techniques. However, I think her most impressive skill is connecting with the emotion of the song and translating that to her audience. It's difficult to find a performance where you are not moved by it. Often to tears. Enjoy her other songs and share it with us.
This is a perfect song to start with. Sohyang all in white.. simply an angel.
What's amazing is.........South Korea isn't even my own country, yet I feel more moved by this performance than the typical songs of my country. That really speaks a lot to So Hyang....and even the rest of the musicians. The whole performance just sends chills down my spin and even moisture to my eyes!

Please do more Sohyang. ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ ‘I Have Nothing’ cover at the DMC Festival 2015, ‘Lean On Me’, ‘Everyone’ are but just a few of her outstanding performances. One of my favorites is ‘Dream’ at the DMC Festival in 2015, hands down one of the most difficult songs to sing ever. She’s actually a gospel singer. She’s just a phenomenal vocalist. One of the best in the world in my opinion.

Thank you for reacting to So Hyang. To me she's one of the best female vocalists out there, she's a rollercoaster. Would love to see you react to more of her stuff. So Hyang is a South Korean singer known for her controlled, skillful, and developed voice who has been dubbed by the international media as the "Korean Mariah Carey". Sohyang's parents divorced when she was in her third year of high school. Due to this, Sohyang experienced great financial difficulties, and, according to her, was often very sad as a result. At the age of twenty, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, due to the early detection, she was able to survive the cancer, but was rendered infertile. Because of the many chemo she went through, she's often sick, actually in her "You Raise Me Up" performance she had Pneumonia and was told by her doctor that she shouldn't even talk that day but she still went and sang and have us THAT performance while sick, would love you see you react to that. She has gotten many and many proposes from companys to work fo them and getting paid and be a succesful singer but she never accepted any because she really doesn't have interest in making that kind of money. She's a devout Christian. She first began singing in her local community, with no aspirations of pursuing a career as a professional singer. She has said her only goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times.

I reacted to her recently to this song as a first time hearing moment and was completely blown away. I noticed many of the things you pointed out but learned some cool things from you as well. I never get tired of hearing this song. I always get goosebumps when she begins singing, I get emotional when she takes us through the turmoil in the middle of the song and I get teary as she sings Arirang alone at the end, saying that the two koreas are still alone. It’s like I’m hearing a story rather than simply hearing a song. Wow 🤩

I'm not gonna lie, I just watched this for about the 30th time and I still dropped a tear. Her singing is just so perfect. Angels in heaven just sound this good.
y'know, the thing that impresses me the most about so hyang's vocals is the fact that i've never seen the woman using an in ear piece, & trust me, she puts on some performances that one would think impossible without using something to hear oneself, & be as pitch perfect & clear as she is... consistently, too.
she's all around a top notch performer & one beautiful human being, inside & out. if i were forced to pick one female vocalist, it's so hyang (& her male counterpart, dimash, of course).
i hope you continue exploring her vast array of music... but please be cautious, as she is consistently one of the top CW striked performers i see reactors getting hit with.
i know there's a number of ways people go about getting around this, & trust me, so hyang is worth finding out for!

I thought the same here-how is she doing this without an in-ear? Wow. It’s as impressive as when I watched Dimash deliver two powerhouse songs at his Bastau concert without working in-ears because of technical issues. All that muscle memory coming back to play for these vocal masters. Wow 🤯
using an in ear piece has no correlation to vocal ability.

I love the pure joy she exudes while she is singing. Pure magic!
She is acknowledged as one of the best technical singers in Korea. This traditional song was arranged by her for this performance. She has strong Gospel roots which is evident when she sings. I could honestly listen to her sing forever. I really love when western people discover her for the first time. It is deep hole that you have fallen down but the journey will be truely magical.
Bb5 is a signature note of hers. She seems to love hitting that particular note, as they tend to be the longest held and most powerful of her high notes. She does occasionally get up to g5 commonly too, but not as often as Bb5.
Love your expression when you listen. Your excitement is contagious and really fun to watch. She is one of the only singers that gets reactors to cry or be made speechless. Your comments are really fun to listen to and watcb. She was a music lecturer at a major Korean university. You are about to enter into a whole new world. Bridge Over Troubled Water was my first introduction to So Hyang 3 years ago and I was hooked. In my opinion she has surpassed her influencers. No tricks when she sings. Her history is fascinating. I believe after a few more reactions you will declare she is the best female singer ever. One more thing she and her family do all the arrangements.
Sohyang is the only unique singer in the world who sings with his own singing style and interpretation of music.

You must hear and see the newest SoHyang;"Never enough" you see 3 SoHyangs in princess dresses in a white dress she is sitting in a colorfull huge chair. 2 SoHyangs stand before the chair. 3 SoHyang singing together is a rare sight ! She looks and sounds beautifully !
i literally tear up every single time i hear that Bb5. i no nothing about vocals but she just has the most beautiful voice i’ve ever heard.
I really love how in this performance she starts out so light and clear, but she's able to blend that so well with the rest of her voice that you barely even notice that she's changing and adding strength at first

When I first watched that video, I was blown away and in tears. Not only was her vocals amazing, the arrangement was beautiful and helped bring listeners on a journey. I often go back to So Hyang's Arirang because it is that good! Also, thanks for the video and I enjoyed your reaction and analysis.

Thank you. So happy that you are reacting to So Hyang. With future reactions you might notice that So Hyang does not do profit based concerts. Her personal story of being a cancer survivor is perhaps, partly why she does not do commercial concerts.

BTW she is a gospel singer predominantly & sings with her in-laws CCM band, but she can sing any genre & on her stint on king of masked singer she sang ballads,pop,rock & was heard rapping in one song(day day) BTW she only went on king of masked singer after much persuasion & because it was literally behind a mask. At that time was thinking about not performing anymore as she didn't think she was good enough. Luckily for us,she saw how favourably the audience received her & now we can all witness the amazing sohyang. Many people refer to her as the 'queen' to Dimash's 'king' of Asian vocals, although in both cases I think that should be of the world & not just Asia. She is a cancer survivor,although treatment left her unable to have children of her own. She is not interested in fame & fortune, she just wants to use her voice,which she believes is gods gift to her, to help people that are having hard times feel a little better. Many ask the question " how come such an amazing singer is not well known all over the world" & just assume that talent scouts/promoters just haven't reached S.Korea yet but the truth is that many labels have tried to sign her but thats not what she wants. She is not only beautiful on the outside, she is the most warm & beautiful person on the inside too. She is the only singer(apart from dimash on the odd occasion) that regularly has me in tears,even when she's singing in korean & there are no english subs available & I haven't got a clue what she's singing about. She is so musically talented & she does the arrangements for the songs she performs. Obviously its harder to appreciate her input if its a song you're not familiar with but with songs i'm sure you know like 'bridge over troubled water', 'lean on me', 'you raise me up' it becomes more obvious, oh & of course her rendition of WH's 'i have nothing' live @ the DMC festival

Please react to "Everyone" by Sohyang. She puts a gospel twist in her remake of this popular 1970s Korean song. The song was very popular for its inspirational lyrics. It is still loved and covered by many artists in Korea, but Sohyang did something else to it. Her pure soul reached out and touched my heart at one point of this performance.
Just imagine So Hyang în a choir with a smal orchestra like a chamber clasical orchestra with a mix tradițional instrument.

Should react to "Everyone" as she herself has commented is one of the most difficult songs she has had ever sang. Also a cover of Raise Me Up" is absolutely my most favorite of all cuz of her magnificent arrangement of the song.
I love it when people react to Sohyang but I love it even more when their first reaction is this song because NO ONE expects her to have that insanely beautiful voice since she starts so soft. I remember how shocked I was the first time and she has remained my favorite vocalist since! I normally just recommend ANYTHING she sings lol... but *Everyone* is another one of my favorites, *Fate* is also amazing and *Hug me* ... and all her other performances from the Masked singer but unfortunately they’re not available on YT ☹️

Use to love Ailee ( listen to her amazing " I will always love you") still do, but when I heard Sohyang I knew she was the BEST!, Her "Everyone" is Classic, try listing to "Bridge over troubled water"( if you want her gospel influence), "Stand by me" is mind blowing ( Michael Bolton in the audience gives her a standing ovation) , I love her "O'Holy night" Star King version, and if you want to hear her Whitney Houston influence listen to her " I have nothing." This was a mood. Also that moment when as a vocalist I just had to laugh at how amazing she is. And she just didn't STOP. Like, holy hell.
You're right about her soul/gospel/R&B influences. She herself has acknowledged Whitney and Mariah as being major influences, among many.
Her crystal-clear voice. She is the only artist I've ever come across who evokes a visual of a crystalline vocal chord, every time I hear her sing (when she is on form, which is when she isn't ill, which too often she sadly is [ill, that is]). Everyone else I've ever listened to, including top, beautifully toned and skilled operatic sopranos, such as Callas, Damrau, etc., I necessarily visualize the fleshy, rippled, mottled textures typical of a human vocal tract. With So-Hyang, that visual is just incongruent with the pure, crystalline tones emanating from her chords. I can only imagine the sounds emanating from the clearest of crystal chords and tract.
Shame she's ill so much of the time, but, when she has her health, and so is able to get herself on form, she's at the very sharp end among the world's best. She's also perhaps one of the world's best arrangers, though, due to her singing prowess, hardly anyone ever seems to notice that aspect.
