10 Types of Watch Snobs (according to TGV and Marc):
07:19 #1: The quartz watch hater
10:11 #2: The luxury elitists collector
12:30 #3: The affordable only collector
    16:55 #4: The investment collectors
19:42 #5: The smartwatch only wearer
    22:08 #6: Vintage-is-better snob
24:56 #7: The one brand purist
29:14 #8: The collector that will not wear anything but Swiss made because they don't want Chinese parts in their watch (LOL if they'd only knew)
31:01 #9: The collector who just sh*t on everyone else's opinion on what makes a good watch

#8 is a very special kind of stupid.
I see these ppl spit their venom whenever someone mentions buying an affordable Japanese watch, instead of some overpriced Swiss watch.
They bring up "Swiss Made", whilst being wilfully ignorant of the fact that only 60% of the watch actually needs to be sourced and manufactured in Switzerland.
There are loads of Swiss watches I like, but I would never consider Japanese watches to be of a lesser quality, and that's why I currently only have Japanese watches.

    • @brianmsahin
      @brianmsahin 10 месяцев назад +5

Would you believe Alex. I converted! I was gadget mad, latest phone every year, latest tablet, latest laptop, latest smartwatch, latest earbuds. What changed for me was the obsolescence. Everything I bought eventually became obsolete and I just stopped. My phone is now 4 years old and working fine. I still have the same smartwatch but I only wear it when I'm on the rowing machine and haven't bought a new computer unless strictly necessary. Then I found watches. They don't become obsolete, I can hand them on to my children. They have history. A Seiko Navitimer that I backpacked around the world with, a Casio G-Shock that I climbed the Fox Glacier and Mount Tasman with, a Cartier Tank I wore when I got married. You can't get memories like that from an electronic gadget. However you're right. I don't think there are many people who will change.

This video has today gotten me to put down my Tudor and pick up my Flightmaster.
There are so many watches I own that get a bad rep online (and online only - because nobody would ever say these things in person), because I haven’t bought the “correct” choice.
Apparently me receiving a quartz PRX as an anniversary present is basically like being a “watch poor”, when really, I’ll enjoy the second half of my present which is a trip back to Japan. What would I rather own, a £3500 watch? Or a £300 watch I can take away and create incredible memories (and will be the watch I am wearing when I propose there).
I know what I’d rather have, anyway.

Are these now all disqualified? Hmm. I have once visited the IWC museeum and frankly, as a Swiss I'm not pround of the IWC WW2 involvement. But then again, is a MOD Specs Omega or Rolex OK? I think we're all guilty of some snobbishness that can't necessarily be put into a clear category. We're all probably, to some degree, snobs for our own taste. As in, we pick the watches we pick because we see something in them that we think is special and worth being appreciated above others. And when people either don't see that, or see it but don't value it like we do, we tend to think less well of those people (not personally, of course, but in terms of watch taste). I know I'm guilty of this sometimes.
To give myself as an example, I think a lot before making a purchase. And the watches I like the most are the ones that appeal to me on a design and engineering level, and that are also uncommon. Therefore, I am sometimes judgemental of a collection containing 'common' watches - like standard moonwatches or datejusts. I believe they're good watches and there's reasons they're popular, but they just seem too obvious to me.

Inverted snobs are quite big too- also we often place our own budget and values in a watch as being the correct budget/value.
“How can anyone spend £8000 on a Rolex DJ/OP when you can get a Christopher Ward sealander for a tenth of that!” (Maybe because the person has the money and wants the OP/DJ and not a CW)
“I would never pay over rrp for a watch”
(I wouldn’t pay over rrp for a Rolex because their rrp is expensive enough but if I really wanted a g shock that was rrp £140, hard to get hold of and was available for £200 I wouldn’t think twice as for my budget £60 is an expense I’m happy to pay. Someone some extra 0s on their bank balance might feel the same way about a few grand over rrp)

Omega and Grand Seiko Quartz are worth it. Same build quality and durable movements. Low servicing costs and usually at most you’re paying for a battery change and that’s it. Can go decades without a service.

I'm like Tristano: if I had DuckTales money, I still wouldn't buy ultra high-end watches. But not for the same reason. I just don't find overly complicated watches particularly attractive. Some do a good job of integrating it into the design, but there's nothing more ugly than a perpetual calendar with four subdials of writing on the face.

On movements, how about a nuclear powered movement? Hear me out, a nuclear reaction takes place, this nuclear reaction gives off light, it travels 8 minutes to Earth, and strikes the face of a movement that converts this light energy to electrical energy and then through the quantum mechanical properties of solids, let's say quartz, it vibrates, and can regulate the motion of a mechanical system that tells time.

To tell the truth. If I had a choice between a $19k Rolex and a $1k watch that has all of the same features I'll take the $1k watch and then spend the $18k in change to travel. It's a choice between telling good time or having a good time. It's no contest for me.

In general I dislike anyone who puts down another man’s watch choice. Wear what makes you happy! 😎
I was under the weather this morning. So took it slow today and watched this video after breakfast. And it gave me so much energy. I should pay you guys for medical services. (Tiger TGV made me laugh as well 😊)
I don’t consider myself a watch snob. Love my Casio and Seiko just as much as my Omegas for example. Casio for the design and easy to slap on the wrist. Seiko also for the design but also the value for money. My Omegas for the beauty, history and great engineering (I also love Rolex by the way) And my Island watches for the passion that Marc puts into them, and they look brilliant. I wear all of them, depending on my mood or the situation. It’s a passion. Of course if I had more money I would buy more exclusive watches but I wouldn’t be happier. Never bought a watch as an investment but some of them are definitely assets that could be turned into cash if the situation warrants it. You never know.
I can go on about this… great video guys. Loved the Socrates quote!

When you appreciate watches, you can find a Casio duro and say what a amazing watch and tremendous value, You will wear it proudly and actually be able to talk about its features. I dont dive 1000M dives but I can also wear my Sinn U1 T-SDR for everyday wear and if I feel like a night out on th town, I can wear my Rolex 16710 Coke dial and feel amazing just as I do when I wear my Casio. It is all about appreciating the engineering, design and functionality of a time piece. People that criticize a watch based on visuals, price and or because they dont find value, are best keeping their feelings to themselves. There are plenty of watches to fit individual tastes. Great video as always gents!

Some thought on snobs in general rather than specific watch snobs. First, those who laugh at people who wear Rolexes. They think they are “nouveau riche” and flaunting their wealth. Yes, this will apply also to any enormous gold watch but it applies just as much to any type of Rolex no matter how subtle. There a strong overlap here looking down on people who own expensive cars, especially a Rolls Royce or Ferrari. Second, those who laugh at people who have more than one watch. An overlap here with iPhone users but it’s anyone who can’t understand why someone would want to decide which watch to wear on any given day. Finally, and I think you may have covered this, there are those who know about the topic but look down on people who they consider are spending too much or not being authentic enough. These are people who wouldn’t spend more than around £500-£1K on a watch. Strong overlap here with photographers who laugh at those photographers who buy Leica and who consider anyone using digital rather than film cameras or streaming music rather than vinyl.

Team Edward (Twilight), the houses in Harry Potter etc etc etc. We need a group we belong to. And a brand is a perfect "tribe" to get all passionate about and of course defend against "the others", usually a rival of a similar level.
