#8 is a very special kind of stupid.
I see these ppl spit their venom whenever someone mentions buying an affordable Japanese watch, instead of some overpriced Swiss watch.
They bring up "Swiss Made", whilst being wilfully ignorant of the fact that only 60% of the watch actually needs to be sourced and manufactured in Switzerland.
There are loads of Swiss watches I like, but I would never consider Japanese watches to be of a lesser quality, and that's why I currently only have Japanese watches.

      @brianmsahin Год назад +5

Would you believe Alex. I converted! I was gadget mad, latest phone every year, latest tablet, latest laptop, latest smartwatch, latest earbuds. What changed for me was the obsolescence. Everything I bought eventually became obsolete and I just stopped. My phone is now 4 years old and working fine. I still have the same smartwatch but I only wear it when I'm on the rowing machine and haven't bought a new computer unless strictly necessary. Then I found watches. They don't become obsolete, I can hand them on to my children. They have history. A Seiko Navitimer that I backpacked around the world with, a Casio G-Shock that I climbed the Fox Glacier and Mount Tasman with, a Cartier Tank I wore when I got married. You can't get memories like that from an electronic gadget. However you're right. I don't think there are many people who will change.

There are so many watches I own that get a bad rep online (and online only - because nobody would ever say these things in person), because I haven’t bought the “correct” choice.
Apparently me receiving a quartz PRX as an anniversary present is basically like being a “watch poor”, when really, I’ll enjoy the second half of my present which is a trip back to Japan. What would I rather own, a £3500 watch? Or a £300 watch I can take away and create incredible memories (and will be the watch I am wearing when I propose there).

When you appreciate watches, you can find a Casio duro and say what a amazing watch and tremendous value, You will wear it proudly and actually be able to talk about its features. I dont dive 1000M dives but I can also wear my Sinn U1 T-SDR for everyday wear and if I feel like a night out on th town, I can wear my Rolex 16710 Coke dial and feel amazing just as I do when I wear my Casio. It is all about appreciating the engineering, design and functionality of a time piece. People that criticize a watch based on visuals, price and or because they dont find value, are best keeping their feelings to themselves. There are plenty of watches to fit individual tastes. I am born in the last few months of the 70s and we are indeed a completely different people now, a fact which a lot of people from around the world don't always acknowledge. Even my parents were born after the war. I‘ve been the affordable only collector snob so far. Not just for the reason mentioned that I feel I can get a lot more fun from like 10-20 different cool affordable watches instead of one luxury watch, but also because I‘m afraid that I will not connect with the watch and then would have to resell it as used, lose a lot of money, etc. Maybe I need to borrow a luxury watch from somewhere to test it so to speak, but I don‘t even know where you could do that except for friends, etc.

“How can anyone spend £8000 on a Rolex DJ/OP when you can get a Christopher Ward sealander for a tenth of that!” (Maybe because the person has the money and wants the OP/DJ and not a CW)
“I would never pay over rrp for a watch”
(I wouldn’t pay over rrp for a Rolex because their rrp is expensive enough but if I really wanted a g shock that was rrp £140, hard to get hold of and was available for £200 I wouldn’t think twice as for my budget £60 is an expense I’m happy to pay. I have to say that is the new you TGV. Part Tony, part Tigger. Also, Mark always appreciate your insights - watches are an art medium - it depends what you do with it. Always a great show when you present your views together. Looking forward to more free and unbiased content. As I write this, I look across to the Greenwich Observatory, just on the hill, the home of time and feel a draw beyond just wearing a watch but also to time itself. Good health to you both!

I enjoy these videos you two do a lot. I have become a watch enthusiast in the last 10 years or so probably due to my retirement. It is definitely a journey. Casio got me into watches as that's what my Dad considered a high value watch when I was coming of age. I remember us both wanting a G-shock when they came out. I was a soldier and my civilian career was in law enforcement so watches suited to those endeavors were always interesting to me. I have started to expand in what interest me watch wise. I guess it can be different for each person. I kind of just like what I like and look for that in watches that are not ridiculously expensive. they are all cool to look at though.

Hi TGV, what is the snobbery against Tag Heuer all about? Is it because it was the ultimate aspiration watch of the 90s and it's a similar hate on Rolex?

I believe the tiger ( I think) cartoon is really a nice addiction to the end. Nice topic to get a different perspective on wrist watches! I really like quartz time pieces. It is remarkable that the frist g-shock 5600 was released 40 years ago, and its style still rocking today.
I hope too see in a future video the top brands issued to police special forces!

I only wear my Apple Watch when I go to the gym or am out on a walk/office commute to better track my steps and heart-rate. I'm starting to travel a bit ore now, so I'm thinking of picking up a microbrand GMT, but I have always had a fascination with mechanisms and machinery, so I stick to automatics when possible.

It is my only watch right this moment. I am buying a Seiko 5 Sport because I feel silly going to work in a Rolls Royce when we all actually drive corollas. Always interesting in hearing the best new options from 200-600 usd. I am saving up for an Island watch because he is indeed a cool dood. Cheers gents.

I'm glad you covered the affordable watches only snobs, because they often play the victim card when it comes to so many watch discussions and videos.
These types of snobs don't only exist within the watch community, I've seen their kind on high end office chair videos too.
Rather than accepting that they can't afford something, they'll use words like "overpriced, overhyped and overrated" to fuel their own personal inability to buy a certain product.
I can't afford watches from brands like AP, VC and Patek Phillipe, but I would never hate on any of their watches because of that.

I have watch buyers regret. I buy the cheapest straps and watches expecting them to perform. Eg $16 Aud, Seiko Presage Homage. When received the second hand stuck with the minute hand.
And $3.50 Aud spring bar straps that break the first time you use them. Bugger.

It's so true that no one is looking at people's watches, except for maybe that rare person who's really into them. Never buy a watch thinking that you're going to have everyone fawning over it and thinking you're a cooler/better/richer person because of it. You really have to wear something that you really get a kick out of.
I've been fascinated by watches since I was small, starting with Casios (one had a thermometer on it that blew me away and was a favorite for a long time), and have been wearing a whole range of watches over the decades. One of my prized possessions is a Texas Instruments Model 101 from the '70s during the LED boom which still looks good today. Lately, although I have some fine watches, I get a big kick out of the Seagull 1963, 40mm. It wears really well and keeps time better than more expensive stuff, and just looks cool.
If I would call myself a snob in any way I'd say I'm slightly anti-smart-watch. They don't have much character and they're too ubiquitous, which I feel precisely reflects the persons wearing them. Another one would be anti-dive-watch. I mean, come on, how many of those people dive? I admit they can look cool, but they've flooded the watch market. They're a way to kind of signal an adventurer type, but it's a lot like all those people who drive pick-up trucks yet never haul anything, or Jeeps and never go off-road, or small people in giant SUVs. Oh, and I have a thing against watches from conglomerates. That's simply not healthy consumerism.
