You gotta admit, Mark Cuban is one helluva owner. Dude not only backed up his players, but he also spent his own money to conduct personal research on the ball to protect his players. You don't hear about many owners going through great lengths with their players like that. Most just want more money

No offense but how does a 5-8% difference in bounce height get past any level of testing? That's pretty huge if you consider that dribbling is an automatic motion that players have ingrained since childhood.

@High Overlord Snarffie Beagle a lot of shit is made in china because its cheaper to pay them to make it. Just because its from china does not inherently mean poor quality. China just get a bad rep because they make affordable products for the world. People in highly developed countries dont need their cheaper products necessarily because their cheaper products are meant to be affordable for most of the world. Not just for the rich
Yeah that's a HUGE difference. Especially on more precise dribbles I imagine the ball would be lost alot
They control all the variables ensuring both balls are dropped at the same height pressure angle etc. Then they measure the bounce of each ball over several trials. Dozens, hundreds, maybe even thousands. Then come up with the conclusion that on average based on the data garnered one ball bounces higher than the other one by X%. Finding x is an easy statistical formula that can be achieved through simple brain storming and calculating

I was going into the 8th grade when this came out. My parents weren't about to spend a hundred dollars on this ball for me. I got a LeBron James "Jersey" basketball instead. I got a small version of this ball at Valley Fair that year though. My uncle bought the real version and I remember it felt slippery and heavy when it got wet. Like a sponge

I tried out for the D league in 2008(Colorado 14ers) and in training camp we played with this ball. I hated it. It was too slippery and while shooting it slipped on my fingers and making my shot go way off. I hated it with a passion.

No mention of the fact these balls and jerseys were/are cheaper to manufacture, thus increasing the profits for the manufacturers (and likely decreasing the costs for the league). It's all about the money, it has nothing to do with creating a 'better product'.
All about creating a *NEW* product to sell. Even if they weren't cheaper, it's a way to get people to buy a product to replace another when there really is no need. Same reason why they constantly come out with newly designed jersey.

I owned one of these basketballs. I practiced with it everyday. The bounce was just ever so slightly short, nothing too noticeable, but that 5% less bounce I would definitely agree with that. I never had an issue with any cuts or grip or anything, but I wasn't playing 82 games a year and practicing 100+ times a year professionally, so it makes sense that the pros would run into these problems. They should have tested it during the preseason or summer league or something to put the ball through game-like situations. I remember vince carter banking in quite a few Three-pointers and a lot of weird shots making it in with this basketball.

I remember playing with this ball. It does feel much different but honestly it wasnt bad. It felt lighter. I think this is what kobe was talking about when he said players just dont know how to shoot if they are complaining about this ball. And the only issue for him was handling the ball with this new basketball

Cokebyparis the NBA doesn’t really try new stuff. I mean the only two major changes that have happened in nba history was the addition of the 3 point line and new shoes. Other than that, everything stayed basically the same because they have no real need to add or edit anything else because of the overall simplicity of the sport. The NFL and NHL has much more significant changes happening to their gear all the time due to safety improvements.

On a humorous note, the infamy of the ball was so much even then that, during the games they reintroduced the old balls, the Washington Wizards actually held a pregame ceremony to "re-welcome" the old balls.
I remember buying this official game ball in 2007 and still have it. A really cool ball, but leather has to be the go-to for the league.

You can't just go changing balls willy nilly ... Not going over it with the players first was the biggest mistake. If you can't source enough good leather to make the old style balls, they probably need to switch it to synthetic materials at SOME point. But you GOTTA consult the players and probably do a lot of testing and trial and error and let them adjust before you just introduce a new ball that's the most fundamental part of the sport ...
They need to do the same with the nike jerseys

I actually got a chance to play with that ball before without realizing it was the new kind. It did feel cheap with less grip. Any debris on the court it would sort of stick to it. Shooting the ball felt a bit heavy and it bounced pretty low like if it needed more air.

There’s nothing like shooting around w a nice leather ball that’s been broken in over multiple years. It just feels like you can’t miss and automatically aligns up in your finger tips for the perfect rotation. There could be 10 balls at the park and only 1 of them becomes game ball for a reason

As soon as this ball came out I went and bought one... I had the same thoughts, it was TERRIBLE. First time shooting around with it and my hands were tore up, felt like the thing was wrapped in sand paper. Went back to my old Nike leather in about 10 minutes.
I’ll never forget that game winner Vince Carter has with this ball. It bounced so unnaturally on the rim and rolled in.
