If you a true a laker fan you knew Kobe was done the first game he played Lebron when Lebron went back to Cleveland in 2015. I watched that game and he was joking with Lebron and having fun. No way the 2006-09 Kobe would have done that. That version of Kobe would have attacked Lebron. I was in attendance for his game against the Pelicans in 2015 when he had that season ending shoulder injury. Even before the injury I saw him more laid back. He just wasn’t the same Kobe I saw dropped 50 points in 2007 against the Hornets during his 4 game 50 point streak. That was killer. So to me Kobe really retired in 2014 and just had fun his last two seasons.

You don’t know Kobe. Or LeBron.
They were Olympic gold medalists together. Kobe wasn’t as good as LeBron, physically, even then.
After 2007, Kobe DEMANDED A FKN TRADE. Only reason he stayed was Pau.
Kobe knew couldn’t do his solo work anymore if he wanted more rings. Mentally, Kobe was an all-timer, but LeBron took a trash Cavs team to the NBA FINALS in 2007-at 21/22. Kobe tried the solo action in 2007 and had nothing to show for it.
I love Kobe but I love the Lakers more. That mindset is a loser’s mindset which is why Kobe abandoned it and loved Pau Gasol.

I can't relate to being someone on this level, but as an older person who used to go pretty hard, I know a little bit about it. I did a lot of sports, basketball included, but my main thing was distance running (5k, 10K, half marathons mostly). I ran competitively as a young man, and long after I started to slow down, I still did fun runs and other charity events. At age 38, while running a marathon, my left knee gave out at the 21km mark. Half way. I walked/hobbled the last 21km. Not wanting to stop, I kept training and entered a few more shorter runs, but no more marathons. Then a few years later, while running a 10K, I struggled. Not because I was slower, but I just didn't enjoy it. My legs had always moved my body easily. Not fast in my older age, but still easy. Not any more. I crossed the line and never did another one. There I was, nearly 30 years after my first race, taking my shoes off for the last time and I knew in that moment I would never do it again. And with that came a big loss to my identity. Countless miles of training and competition on three continents, hundreds of races, who knows how many pairs of shoes. I was always "the runner" in my group. People still ask me how the running is going, even though it's been almost a decade. I had to find new motivation, and it was hard. Now I am in the gym most days, I enjoy lifting now, but it's quiet, personal. I'm in at 4am and done before most people get out of bed. It's not how people see me. They still see me as something I can never be again. It's hard to walk away.
