- This video aimed at the beginner will give some tips on how to get the altissimo notes to come out. Lots of beginners struggle with producing the altissimo G and instead produce a lower overtone. This video will explain how to overcome this problem.

Hi. I don't have fingering sheets but there are various websites that have multiple fingering sheets that can be downloaded. Basically, I watched various videos and tried them out and wrote down the fingerings that worked for me. So maybe create your own blank sheet and fill it in with the fingerings that work with your saxophone. I’m a beginner sax playing a beginner Yamaha yas 26 alto sax. Cannot manage to get in the Altissimo range no matter how many tries (not giving up) do you think it only works for more professional grade saxophones?
Hi. It will work for all grades of saxophones, mouthpieces and reeds, though some may make it easier to do. It is really a matter of how you form your oral cavity and tongue. Altissimo notes are another form of overtone. So maybe try playing overtones which will help with changing the position of your tongue and oval cavity. For example changing the shape of your mouth as when pronouncing 'ah', 'oh', 'ee'. Watch my video on overtones for a detailed explanation. Alternatively, just keep working at it. It is like riding a bike. Eventually you work it out. Altissimo A is the easiest, so maybe start from there. Thanks.
@@Saxcomprehensive thank you for the detailed response. I was attempting the altissimo range only starting yesterday. I have been learning the start of Giant Steps by John Coltrane and there’s one note (high G) which I had to give special attention to. No matter how I blew with the correct keys, I wasn’t getting the note I normally hear when I listen to the song. That one note… haha
@@Rayquesto I know this comment is somewhat old, but when trying to play altissimo g as a beginner, approach it chromatically from D. Which fingering you choose to use does not matter, what matters is that you go from F# to G chromatically. Don't just try to find an altissimo note without approaching it chromatically if you don't already have the embouchure experience required to do so.
Another exercise that will help with your altissimo range on top of overtones is undertones. Whereas with overtones you are playing the partials of low notes, an undertone takes you down the partial of a given note. For example, finger middle D with the octave key but actually make low D come out as if you weren't holding the octave key. Do the same for all notes going up chromatically. It gets much more difficult the higher you go. (This exercise requires a massive amount of air support and a very specific embouchure, similar to overtones but simply different.)
Also, mouthpiece exercises will help your altissimo range as well as your overall tone. Simply play on a mouthpiece. It should play a high A or Bb (F# or G in the saxophone pitch.) Once you achieve an A or Bb (your choice) in tune, bend the pitch down chromatically. Go back up to your first pitch, then go two notes down chromatically. In other words a remington exercise on mouthpiece.
Both of these exercises I do daily and they develop my embouchure, breath support, and give me a full warm up.
@@gavin2870 Thanks for the tips. Just by way of response, I want to explain that I don’t have an F# key based on the model of the sax. You can even look it up. Perhaps that is limiting.
@@Rayquesto There are other fingerings for F# which you've probably figured out by now. My best advice is to just do mouthpiece. Alot of mouthpiece. By the time you can bend the pitch from an A down and octave you should be set. Just make sure you're playing the pitches in tune with a tuner. It also helps to play the pitches on a keyboard or piano as you play the exercise to hear the notes, which will help you find them.
