Hi everyone! Just to keep you updated... I don’t know yet if I will be teaching virtually from home or from my classroom. But I wanted to create this space just in case because if I am teaching from my classroom, we may end up back at home if conditions worsen or anyone contracts the virus. Once I know exactly where I’ll be teaching from, I’ll let you all know! ❤️ Also, I know so many of you are very anxious about going back to school because this year is going to be SO different. But this is going to help us grow as educators and if anyone can do it, WE CAN! You’ve got this!

Teachers are amazing. I can't believe you just found out you have to teach virtually and, rather than mope around (as I'm doing as a college student who is also virtual), you just went to Target and started building your home classroom. I'm sorry that our society placed more value on going to bars and beaches this summer than on getting the virus under control so kids could get to school. This is such a sad situation and your students are so lucky to have someone like you to keep them positive and hopefully reduce the pedagogical and developmental impacts of missing in-person schooling.

I have been teaching for over 30 years and when March hit, I had no idea how to teach online and very little experience with technology. I spent the first couple weeks very sad, lost, and depressed. During vacation I had a talk with myself and decided that I had a choice. I could just wallow in self pity and struggle or I could learn. I chose to learn and that is when I found you. You literally saved me. I find you engaging and informed, intelligent, hard working, and professional. I have learned so much from you. Thank you for doing what you do and helping those of us who need it. I look forward to your videos and what you will do next. Thanks again

I stumbled on one of your RUclips videos last spring when I was trying to navigate Google Classroom. Your tutorials on all things Google literally saved me and helped me deliver effective lessons. I loved your cheery videos and your love of teaching. I was hooked and I've been watching ever since! I'm a high school teacher and I'm in my last two years of teaching high school. I will be retiring in May 2022. I've had a long career actually going from overhead projectors to virtual instruction...a real rollercoaster ride for sure!!! I'm in San Antonio, Texas and we just received word that we will be virtual until Labor Day; however, I believe that will change due to surging numbers here. Monday I began rearranging a spare bedroom into a classroom. I felt I needed to do this for my students. This is so weird to be starting school this way, but I want to bring a sense of excitement to my kiddos. My room set up, which I will share with you when I am done, will be the same i.e. replicating a cheery, bright classroom. The only difference is the content. I am a high school social studies special education/GEC teacher serving homebound and hospital students. I actually serve students in their homes and/or in their hospital rooms. I carry my lessons and classroom in my car (yes, my arms are muscular). My students have illnesses that prevent them from attending school with their peers. I keep students on target with their peers and assist them to smoothly transition back into their classroom as they convalesce. I, myself, had knee surgery two weeks ago (unexpectedly) and I have been confined to a chair with my leg up so I've actually been Pocketful of Primary binging since. I went back and followed your journey from second grade and through your current assignment (I picked videos here and there because there are literally so many). It's such a beautiful story and you and Billy are just the cutest couple! I know your wedding is coming up soon. Best wishes for a very happy future together.

I wanted to kindly ask you if you could talk about your views on how to go back to school online and actually manage to get to know them, identify their needs and set a good learning vibe but through the screen, I believe it's quite a challenge. (Ice breaker ideas and activities we have at the beginning of the school year) AND if you could also talk about how to keep them engaged for three hours daily. I am really anxious about this unusual start! ...thanks a lot Ms F...you are a blessing. Hi from Mexico!

This is beautiful! I love her!!! But I am personally not doing this. I got this www.walmart.com/ip/UP2U-Folding-Height-Adjustable-Desk-Craft-Table/801720534. and two of these www.ikea.com/us/en/p/helmer-drawer-unit-on-casters-white-10251045/. They can both be put behind a small screen or in a closet when I am not using them. I am using mostly online stuff. No permanent physical classroom stuff in my space. I have a laptop, not desktop. You can make a doc camera using your cell phone or a tablet. I am making a second monitor using my TV. This can go back to a TV when I am done teaching. I am sticking to a 6am to 2pm schedule for work. I spent the last 3 months working 12 hour days and I am OVER it. I am working from 6-2 and then everything gets put away no matter what. I actually do have space for an office, but I say keep your space in your room for you. We all need work-life separation!!

@@mzzzzzzday It sucks. I agree. But we will be home for all year probably. I use mostly online apps and no whiteboard or tripod. But use what makes you comfortable! I teach math. I have a doc camera connected to my computer. I just write on paper with colorful pens. Then take a picture and save it for the kids for later. It works pretty well. You can make a doc camera too with cans and your phone. ruclips.net/video/6Il008KwcUE/видео.html. I really love to hear other districts’ plans for fall lol. I thought I’d share ours. I’m a 17 year old incoming senior, and our plan right now is for half the kids to attend a 2.5 hour morning session and the other half to attend in the afternoon. I really hope we are able to go through with that. For reference, I live in a county in western Pennsylvania. Other area schools are planning to take all their kids back immediately full time. However, our administration does not want us to all have to wear masks all day long. If we’re sitting with ten other kids in the classroom, we should be able to unmask. Childcare has become a living hell for parents, but the superintendent has made it very clear that while he sympathizes with parents, everyone needs to remember that he is in the business of education and is trying to do what is best for our health first and then education.

I'd like it if you gave us a peak of how your desk is set up during virtual teaching--how high is your computer, do you have a separate keyboard or camera, do you use a ring light, etc. Here are my "filming" problems: Keeping my laptop on the desk gives me the dreaded triple-chin, but if I put at at eye height, then it's hard to type. I have a ring light (because there's no natural light in the room I have to use) but it reflects terribly on my glasses. Small tips like that would be helpful to those of us who have no experience being on camera. If you already showed this, no worries. I discovered you this week, and I'm working backwards to your March-April videos to see what you shared as schools started closing. It might already be there, in which case I will surely find it. Thank you for all you're sharing with us, and for the relentless encouragement. It's much appreciated!

Irai Rod one tip for the laptop is to get a wireless or even wired keyboard. Most laptops/chromebooks have a USB port or are Bluetooth capable and u can easily hook up a keyboard to keep lower to type. I know amazon has some good selections for fairly affordable prices. I even saw a keyboard at five below last week. As for the ring light reflection, I wish I had advice, as a fellow glasses wearer that’s the worst! Haha

    • @irairod5160

@@Sara-xk1ns Thank you for taking the time to reply! Yes, I think I'm going to have to get a separate keyboard. I probably have one (or two) stashed in a closet. For the light reflection issue, I think I'm going to try two table lamps with soft shades (or some sheer material) on either side and see if that helps reduce the glare. I can see the ring on my glasses---super distracting!

@@jessmtnz I've moved it around everywhere, the problem is that the room itself is very dark, so any concentrated light source seems "too much". Our school district is starting online for the first 9 weeks. They will access the pandemic situation within 30 days after the kids start late August. Nervous, because I don't know if they want us in the school building teaching or at home. This is on top of being a first year teacher and teaching a subject I'm not comfortable with. - 6th grade teacher

Thank you for mentioning at the end that just because you decided to decorate your home space, not everyone will be able to (or want to). And that’s okay! I love all your decorations and your teaching space, but more importantly I know you’re an awesome teacher and that is enough. If I end up doing remote teaching I will just make do with what I have because I don’t have the extra money or time but you can bet I will put 100% into teaching my students the best I can. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us, you are so inspiring! Even this 20 year veteran can learn a thing or two from you. ❤️❤️❤️

We start back Aug. 10. We are teaching remotely from our classrooms for the first 3 weeks. Kids come with an option for face to face or remote Sept. 11 I think. Perfect timing for this video. I went yesterday to set up my room and got the furniture in place. I saw a promo picture of this video and kept watching for it to get tips on setting up a virtual spot. Seeing your background inspired me. I moved a big bookshelf turned around behind me for a bulletin board space. I can still utilize the shelves on the other side. Today is about my space. First, I’m making a trip to Target to get the paper and border. Then, I’ll try not to copycat you too much, but hey it’s an inspiring learning space, so I think I will. Will you teach synchronously or asynchronously? I think we are doing a mix. Interesting to say the least. I’d like to see you talk about that and how you’ll implement it. Thank you for being you!
