I am so glad that I found your channel. I just turned 64 on August 30th. I am not retiring yet, but as a RN of 44 years who has been teaching nursing full-time for the past eight years, I am absorbing all of your great info like a sponge! It will be a hard decision on when to retire, but after working full-time in the hospital from age 19 until I started to teach eight years ago, I am feeling the wear and tear. I still do 2 days of clinical with the students (including Saturdays for extra money), but the 12.5 hrs. are taking a toll on me due to a recently diagnosed hypothyroid autoimmune condition which causes serious hives. Thank you and I greatly appreciate your kindness in helping reach so many people!

Ed, The Department of Ageing has various programs; they get Federal and State funds; older adults and those who are disabled should check will their local Ageing Services office and inquiry into their funding programs. The programs will vary based on State funding; people will be surprised at the range of added benefits they can receive.

Ed, Most hospitals have programs that help all individuals and families pay for costs and services not covered by insurance such as deductibles or co-pays. They are income based; you can save 25 - 50 - 75 or 100 percent of your balance; again it's based on income. People should inquire; most have programs, and they will sign you up yearly; you submit your income and they give the percentage of what they will pay. In advance, you are covered for any future out of pocket costs for the current year. The savings can be substantial. In my area it's called ICARE.
In addition, they also cover costs with doctors who are connected with the hospital.

No dairy except butter. I take no medications. I dont want any handouts til necessary. I am independent so far. My rent is susidized thank God. I live in a retirement apt. Most everyone is on some form of welfare..food stamps..food shelf...if its free they get it. I never lived like that and wont til necessary. I made so many mistakes, I didn't understand that I would be paying a penalty if I didn't take out the plan B Medicare when I retired,
that I would have to pay thousands of dollars to get that pay now.
And, I didn't have much of a money base because I had a stroke and couldn't stand up without falling over so my work career ended before drawing social security
I used up all my savings during that time for living expenses .
I should have asked for disability but, I didn't have the internet to educate me that I could have gotten a disability check. I am trying to live on about 1000 a month.
I called the state for insurance but they would take my place by some types of laws in my state so I didn't apply.

The thing about medicaid is the contract that one needs to sign. It basically comes down to repaying the state with whatever resources you have like your house. By agreeing to that your kids are left with nothing after your death. Some folks actually read the contract and decide not to apply for that reason not because of pride. What say you?

If filing federal income tax as MFJ, and your spouse is working while your sole income is Social Security, your SS will be taxed based on the combined income of both. So, you are at risk of getting 85% of your SS benefits taxed when it was your spouse who continued working. Getting divorced and continuing to reside together so that the SS recipient can file single is the only way to avoid this. I am a CPA BTW. Thank you for what you are doing for the 99% of us.

What kind of expense can they expect? There are stories of couples having been married decades having to divorce so one spouse can keep those (greatly needed) benefits? What tip or trick can you relay that can help my sister? SS notified her they overpaid her and she submitted a rebuttal. They then took 50% of her SS and said her rebuttal is still “being considered/reviewed”…she has physically gone to the SS office month-after-month only to be told her AFTER A YEAR the SS is still “working on it” and coming back to the office or getting a lawyer won’t help the process. She’s been at this over 18 MONTHS and still no reply after spending hours on the phone only to be told “we’re backed up and the rebuttal is still under consideration”. What can she do to “Live on SS” when only getting 1/2 pay of an already small SS check (about $450) and months & months of excuses from SS??? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
