  • Despite being the official state amphibian, hellbenders aren't exactly overflowing in Pennsylvania's waterways these days.

I live on the north shore, and the smell of the rivers, especially at night, I'm not surprised that they found a dead body in there. It's shameful. And to think that back in the day, we used to swim in the river. Ick!

I live farther away but grew up fishing many pools on the Allegheny and watched a guy throw a dead animal into the river once while fishing. Also seeing condoms floating by was common. And when the rivers hit flood stage, all the poo factories flood and raw sewage is released into the rivers. So that doesn't help the smell much.

I can’t smell very well but I boat on the three rivers and they smell fine, they don’t look fine but they smell fine to me at least.

I have talked to Mike Murphy of Ohiopyle Photography, he's shown me photos he's taken at the Cucumber Rapids Boulder Field, on the Youghiogheny River, where he works taking photos of the kayakers and the rubber boaters as they boat through the Cucumber Rapids.
He's taken number photos of hellbenders.
What is the link to the persons who want the info on hellbender sitings? Because Mike Murphy is someone whoever is doing serious surveying of hellbenders in western PA needs to contact Mike Murphy of Ohiopy Photography, at Ohiopyle City, at Ohiopyle State Park.
Mike has had a hellbender even crawl onto Mike's big rock from which Mike takes his work photos of river kayakers and rafters.
Mike sees hellbenders every year, at the Cucumber Rapids boulder field right at the Cucumber Rapids, Youghiogheny River, Ohiopyle State Park.
