SAD. My grandfather found one of these all the way up in the southern rivers of N.Y. state... slightly pushing the envelope of their known range at the time. It was HUGE. Filled the bottom of a bucket, head past its own tail. He let it go after showing us little kids. That was in the 1970's. I noticed lots of animals are not as common anymore, but others take their place as the land changes. Old abandoned fields were an entomologists dream when I was young, filled with insects and huge Argiope spiders, an much more. Spruce and ash trees have moved in, and now white tail deer, rodents and weasels are more common. In the case of the hellbender, however, the rivers and lakes have only changed from our pollution. That shouldn't be happening. It's outrageously illogical for industries to know about it and continue, knowing they have to live in this world. Don't they know they are painting themselves into a corner? So short-sighted... it's a nightmare come true.

You hear the word hellbender which is an animal, you think of a badass killer beast with spikes huge fangs and claws, etc. But no, the scientists who discovered this was like fuck it and gave the name to an adorable underwater meat stick of a creature which is just as wrinkly as my grandma. woop de fukin do.

We are the worst. I cast that judgment yet I drive a car and my giant house has two heat pumps cranking all day. I’m the problem. I know. However I simply can’t grab a spear and waltz back into the woods. What’s the answer?

Make a small change that you can commit to. Then another. And another.
Pretty soon, all the little changes add up. It's not always about giving everything up all at once :-)

They can be caught at the rate of one every five minutes in the allegany on my property. They are very proliferate in this watershed showing no decline of the species. Based on my direct observations I strongly disagree with a portion of your statements.

Jaedon Piatt Nonsense. In streams and rivers where they exist, it's estimated that there are over 400 salamanders per kilometer. They are threatened by population decline but there are still many thousands of them out there.
