- During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. The next Episode of Alan's 1986 odyssey takes him to Cornwall. Part 16 begins with a couple of night shots at Reading, including 50008 Thunderer. Alan presumably boarded the ‘Night Riviera’ there, the 2359 Paddington to Penzance overnight sleeper service, because the next shot we see is 50039 Implacable departing on this train from Bodmin Parkway station in Cornwall. Alan captures various workings around Bodmin, including a class 37 on an eastbound train of china clay 'hoods', an up HST Intercity 125 service to Paddington, 50001 Dreadnought, bound for Penzance, and a fabulous shot of 50042 'Triumph', filmed from a hillside just west of the station. Turn up the sound for that one; English Electric heaven! Alan then moves on to Lostwithiel where we see 47085 Mammoth leaving the loops with china clay hoods. Class 50s galore feature at Lostwithiel, with 50028 Renown on a stopping service whilst 50046 Ajax and another unidentified Hoover blast through non-stop. Several 37s, including 37232 and 37235, have charge of yet more china clay hoods before Alan moves on to Par, where we see 37207 William Cookworthy on another train of these unique wagons. Finally, an unidentified class 50 thrashes away from the station stop with a rake of Mk 1 coaches bound for Plymouth. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below. Thank you.
I'm slowly working my way though all your videos which are bloody awesome, takes me right back to the days when trains were proper, thanks for posting
You’re very welcome Sidney. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
Ahhh...those were the days. Magic video
Thanks Hugh. I honestly couldn’t agree more.
Great compilation of scenes and a great variety of locations....thanks for posting this as it is great to see BR in its heyday in Cornwall.
Jerry
Thanks Jerry. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
Some fantastic scenes from the 80s great stuff pete
Thanks Hr. Glad you’re enjoying the collection.
A great video full of interest.
Thanks John. Can you believe Alan didn’t think anyone else would be interested in this brilliant material?
Wonderful.. class 50's 37's clay hoods..
Thanks Desdemona. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
Absolutely fantastic videos so much railway action.
Thanks for your kind comments Bordesouls. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
Thanks for posting. Brings back many wonderful memories of holidays in Cornwall, first as a kid, and then as a parent with my own kids. For a modeller like myself so much invaluable information recorded, especially the use of mixed passenger parcels trains on the Cornish mainline. Thanks again for taking the time and trouble to upload. Just a pity the hydraulics had all gone before you got there.
Really glad you’re enjoying the collection Mark. Unfortunately, I can’t take the credit for the filming. That was all Alan’s work.
Nice to see 50042 as it's now preserved at Bodmin
Absolutely Andrei. I’m actually pleased that so many 50s survived. Guess it shows how popular they were and still are.
Great stuff! Thanks for uploading.
You’re welcome SjPA. Glad you’re enjoying the collection.
That's an Alfa Romeo GTV6 at Lostwithiel going across the crossing, I do believe! 😯
At 11:00 did we see Mr Bean's mini going across the level crossing?! But seriously, another great video!
Ah such good days, what interesting network it was back then with the different regions having their own varied loco's and traffic. Today's railway is just so boring.
I couldn’t agree more Dave. Hitachis just don’t have the same appeal do they?
"Fings ain't what they used to be"...the familiar moan of the trainspotter through the generations. Ian Jack wrote that dewy eyed nostalgia leading to a pessimistic view of the present and future is a good reason never to put rail enthusiasts in charge of anything important😀
I was about 10 when this video was shot and well remember being on platforms with Class 50s whizzing through whilst my dad and uncle complained how much more interesting it was in steam days. In 30 years' time I fully expect my son to be looking back wistfully at videos of all the Hitachis, Pendolinos and Voyagers of his childhood.
That's 50021 at Par I think.
Anyone know where the clay hoods were going in the shot at Bodmin Road? Didn't look like ball clay but maybe was ?
I can’t help I’m afraid John, but maybe someone will be able to provide an answer.
I think Moorswater (off the Liskeard-Looe branch) received china clay trains until the early/mid 1990s? Trains from Moorswater to Burngullow, St Blazey or Fowey would all have to go through Bodmin. Weren't there also china clay trains to both Scotland and the Stoke area back then?
@@kevinfowkes2327 Ha, of course Kevin! 2 years ago my geography of the area as clearly wanting! Of course Moorswater! Re other traffic, the Stoke trains were sheeted/un-hooded wagons... called the Clayliner. Not sure if they ever got to Scotland in those days, but certainly later airbraked stock did and does, unless that too has vanished?!
