- During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. In Part 29, Alan endured some atrocious weather in Worcestershire when he visited Bromsgrove and the Lickey Bank. Undeterred, he chose to return the following Saturday in order to film in more favourable conditions! Part 31 opens with a shot of a BR Blue liveried Class 47 descending the bank with a WCML Mk3 ‘Pullman’ rake. Venturing away from their usual Euston to Liverpool/Manchester business travel routes, these coaches were used briefly on Saturday’s Only (SO) services to the South West, offering the rare chance to travel in Pullman luxury in exchange for the payment of a minimal ‘Weekend First’ supplement to the train guard. Next up, 50024 Vanguard works hard to lift its 12 coaches uphill towards Barnt Green. There then follows a veritable thrash fest of 1980s traction, with Classes 31, 37, 45, 47 and 50 all represented, along with several HSTs, their Valenta engines howling. A pair of Class 31s head south with yet another Mk3 Pullman rake. This is presumably 1V49, the 0840 (SO) Liverpool Lime Street to Paignton service, which was actually booked for a pair of 31/4s from Birmingham. We see a host of Class 50s powering up and down the grade, including 50044 Exeter, 50049 Defiance, 50048 Dauntless and 50008 Thunderer. At one point, an unidentified Class 50 passes in the then new Network South East red, white and blue livery, eliciting an amusing “Innit ‘orrible?” comment from an accompanying photographer! I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below. Thank you.
0840 (SO) Liverpool Lime Street to Paignton service
Some nice footage. Really enjoyed the shots with the trespass notices which were being blatantly ignored 😂 (yes I know, different times etc..)
Really glad you enjoyed the video SMcS, and yes, the blatant disrespect of the notices does is indeed hark back to a time when H&S was less stringently observed by the authorities.
Absolutely brilliant, BR at it’s very best. A much better Railway than today.
I couldn’t agree more Ben…. Happy days indeed. Thanks for the great comments.
Impressive hillclimbing performance from the 50s with 11 or 12 coaches. Peaks sounding good as well with fans roaring. Amazing final shot with 50008 going over the top!
Absolutely Andrei. I think this is one of my favourite episodes of Alan’s collection.
This man has some fantastic footage from all around the country fantastic
Thanks fir the great comments Super Sprinter. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
Good catch of the NSe liveried 50. The Network Southeast livery and identity had only been launched four days earlier!
Thanks for the great info CS. I hadn't realised these shots were taken so shortly after the launch of NSE.
@@kartwheelkarl Here's a video of mine, looking at NSE. ruclips.net/video/I57C8N6TzJU/видео.html
I love the comment as it comes into view. "Horrible"!
Wow! Great classic high speed action!
Not necessarily high speed John, at least not when they're heading uphill. Great to see though eh?
My Lords 50008 Thunderer at the end top stuff as always, cheers for sharing.
I agree Gillinghamgus. Spectacular stuff eh? And to think, we took it all for granted. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
Awesome footage at some classic locations in the area, bought back many memories of climbing Lickey with premier motive power !
Thanks for sharing these clips.
Absolutely....really glad you’re enjoying the collection. (From one Mr C to another!)
Wow what an absolute gem of a video, thanks for sharing!
You’re more than welcome Phil. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
this is the site where the banking engines wait for the freight to pull in and then give it a push up the hill and also this is where the new platforms of Bromsgrove are as today
I haven’t seen the location in the flesh recently BRE but from the photos I’ve seen it all looks to have changed a lot. Lickey has electrification masts now doesn’t it?
It has changed a lot mate
Lovely set of vids..esp 50008 at the end :)
Thanks Desdemona. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
Bostin footage, I used to spend many a happy hour around there back in the 70's and 80's. I now live in Barnt Green and planning to move to Blackwell, it would not bother me if I had the noise again. I best I can hope for these days is an odd HST or 68 other heritage traction but once every few days. 🙁
Really glad you’re enjoying the collection Tim. It must have been a great time to have been living so close to Lickey.
I remember when certain mk3 coaches had names on Eg Kitty Wilkinson etc...
Missed out on going to New Street as a kid so missed plenty of 50s there which was a shame..
Hiya Christopher. Really pleased you're enjoying Alan's films. The named mk3 coaches were the Pullmans. They were named after famous people from Liverpool and Manchester and tended to be kept on the routes specific to those people. So for instance, John Lennon would usually be found on the Liverpool Pullman! Imagine? New Street was such a great station in 1980s that it had a major influence in my choosing to go to Birmingham University in 1987.
Caught the intercity pullmans on 10 .14 weston super mare to manchester from paignton got off at temple meads used be great days lots of different locos but boring n bland today
as of today the overhead lines are now here because the class 323s are now using Bromsgrove as the new cross city terminus
Shame we can’t do lineside shots now days called tress passing.
DelticMatt it was then too, they were lucky btp weren't on their case.
You can still film at Vigo (the foot crossing in the first bit of the vid) and thr bridge by stoke works jn
Great Video, the Peak at 2 minutes 52 seconds i assume is heading West? if it is it's propably 45105 on 1V45 08.29 Nottingham-Paignton,i was on 45105 Birmingham-Paignton that day.
So am I right in thinking you were driving 45105 Graham?
Thank you for your great comment by the way Graham. Really lad the vid brought back hopefully happy memories.
@@kartwheelkarl No i Wasn't Driving i was a Passenger Birmingham-Paignton matey.
@@kartwheelkarl I Have Detailed Information on Peak Workings from the Mid 1980's,Details i Wrote Down at that time-Travelling Behind Peaks.
A bit naughty with the chap trespassing. Great vid though.
I agree Paul. In today’s world, getting quite so close to the running lines would probably result in services being suspended and the police being called. Thinking back though, the eighties seemed to be a more liberal time. None of the drivers seem to react to such misdemeanours with even so much as a horn blast! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Freezing the frame, after many tries, the last digit on the NSE liveried 50 looks like a 2; that means it can only be either 50 002 or 50 032 as of the nine listed as being in that livery in the 1987 Combined Volume, only those ended in "2". I cannot see the other digit clearly enough to make it out, but it looks a bit bumpy with would suggest it is 50 032 in the video.
Very impressive detective work Peter. Well done. Isn't it great to get out those precious old books and use them for a purpose again? I'm using my old spotting books and my old copy of Loco Hauled Travel 1986 to write the blurb for each of Alan's films. It takes ages but it's great fun and so nostalgic. I just wish I still had a big old All Lines Timetable book as well. The on.y copy I kept was from the 1990s.
Core blimey. Excellent stuff. I miss br era. Soon all coming to an end with these new plastic shitachi crap. Bye br diesels :(
I couldn’t agree more Matt. Really glad you’re enjoying the collection.
Another great film in this series covering the BR scene nationwide in the 80s. I have enjoyed every one of them I have watched. Sorry, but I cannot give this one a Like as your photographer friend is continually trespassing on the lineside. Even when you have the Warning: Do Not Trespass sign in your footage, there he is abusing the rules.
Um, most of the shots are from public footpaths or foot crossings; that bridge halfway up, for instance, is a publicly accessible spot.
You’ve never done anything you shouldn’t have in life or on the railway? The drivers never cared
Think this is bad? You would crap yourself if you saw what happens in mainland Europe!
Tresspass shots with with warning sign in same shots lol,
Still gets a like but keep off the flipping tracks.
it's not trespass; see above
This shood all bee on DVD
When did they go on the tracks?
