We used to live in Whitley Bay, in the early 70s, we moved to Yorkshire in late 74, so missed the introduction of the Metro. Actually I'd just started work then and had no awareness that it was even being built! Looks like a brilliant system, as does the Sheffield system, it's strange the rest of the country didn't learn from it, even today, actually especially today, it would a good to have everywhere. The price of tickets on buses and trains is now ridiculous, a car is much cheaper and more time efficient.

Living in Whitley Bay I have always been a big fan of the Tyne & Wear Metro .. I've even made several RUclips videos showing the various routes.
The trains are pretty old now, so everybody is looking to see the introduction of the new 'Class 555' trains, hopefully late in 2024

This looked like a very good transport system with buses everywhere, light tram and plenty of connections, but did it last?

Thatcher’s deregulation of the buses destroyed attempts by the PTE’s to integrate buses and trains.

    Goodness, weren't the buses crummy?

Barbara Castle closed more lines than the Tories, despite promising not to. She isn’t the saint this biased film makes her out to be.

Hawick being an example and she made little effort to stop the Great Central being lifted after its bit by bit closure..

This 'documentary' is classic CH4. Kvetching road freight needs to be nationalised. Whilst also explaining how poor the service is from nationalised British Rail.

Castle oversaw the closure Midland Main Line to Manchester which Beeching recommended to keep!

She also closed the last section beyond Leven that Beeching shut in 1965 round the Fife coast, in 1969. Now it's back.
