  • Taiwan is the heart of the bike industry, and the annual Taipei Show showcases how bikes and gear come together, as both consumer brands and the companies that service them set up shop in a sprawling convention center.
I walked the halls to see what was new, weird, and wild, and to chat with folks from around the world.
It was my second time at the show, but my first visit was 25 years ago (!) so things have changed.

    Screw Derailleur:
Thanks Ben for the interview. It was very nice to meet you.
I forgot to mention that besides weight, complexity was the main reason for creating the screw derailleur. Since the show I have
    (1) replaced stainless steel clevis tension rod with aluminum rod,
    (2) created a 3D CAD for the lead screw so I can make a 6061 or 7075 aluminum one, and
    (3) designed a 3D printed shifter ratio converter so it can work with most index shifters (for now, It can work with friction shifters).
Now they weight about 10gram less. I am also changing the filament to ASA-CF for better appearance and outdoor use.
I am thinking of shelfing the design since I do not know if there is a market for it since the market is dominated by the big 3 players who sells the derailleur as part of a group set. Yes, I did talk to several vendors at the show. They all find it to be very interesting but none show interest to support it. I think the best marketing possibility is to sell the non-3D printable parts as a package and allow the purchasers to print the 3D printable parts.
So now I am going to do some testing and fine turning then start working on my next bike project. Cheers!😊

Interview with retired engineer at 13:09 the 'screw derailleur' is the most enigmatic, deftly--search-dodging, mystery design out there. Where does one find more info, 3d printed copies or ride reports on this derailleur...if the infinite tension principle works, it needs to be saved from the museum of suppressed inventions.

I have a drawing here on my desk
of a new bike with electric drive - no chain at all -
the pedals turn a geared-up generator and motors in both wheels also provide effortless electric braking.
EVERYONE that sees the drawing says it is beautiful, "sweet", and I have shown it around enough that it is now in the Public Domain, free for all to use.
How many years will it be before some bike company dares to make such a great design? 20years?
    30? 50?

A by then, Top 2019 "SuperlightM6LXBrompton" foldingbike, to take on our, till then many vacations on the Island/State of Malta! Sadly my dear wife didn't quite agree, as they drive in the wrong side on narrow roads, with extremely much traffic on the very much populated Islands, so instead I have made it much lighter than originally, with all the titanium and carbon parts to find and add. For now very close in weight to their latest "Contraption" of that kind, a Brompton full titanium, folding bike, and now with a lot of problems!!

Well I will never buy a Maxxis tyre in my life again. It completely and utterly sucks. Let stand that I will not check where the parts come from. Anything from China OR Taiwan, sorry, but I don't want it. I like Europeans to have a better chance, I want nature to have a better chance, and I am completely done with world geo political crap. So no more. It will be European or American, and the rest I will ignore as much as can. Let m do their thing I am fine with it. But not sponsored out of my pockets. Good luck!
