      Or does their combined effect lead to a negative space of "anti-copies", so when a store even had copies of the game, after both videos hit and they sell out then they will see that there are shelves that have empty box-shaped voids where nothing else than Leviathan Wilds can exist.

    I commented the same on NPI's video but 1) Definitely backing this, and 2) If anyone wants to try a different take on the same concept, I really recommend Skulk Hollow, which is a 1v1 strictly 2-player game where one player is the colossus and one is a group of medieval foxes. Very good fun (along with its sister game Maul Peak).

    • @housecaldwell
      @housecaldwell 4 месяца назад +1

      Thank you! I kept thinking "I've played this but I haven't played this so what was it I played?" - it was Skulk Hollow, which fell a little flat for my wife and me. I think we would enjoy the cooperative nature of this game more (we just prefer cooperative games in general)

    I didn't know I needed a board game about climbing giant monsters. Now I do.

    • @naturesfinest2408
      @naturesfinest2408 4 месяца назад

      Skulk hallow. They released an expansion (or second game) thats similar called maul peak that adds monsters and heros and new mechanics. Its fun and fairly simple game.
      It is a 2 player game, head to head. One playes as critters (i think theyre all cats?) and another as the monster.
      As the animals you climb and shoot at the monster winning if you destroy all its vital points. You start on the middle board and leap onto the monster, which is a different board shaped as said monster.
      As the guardian (monster), you win if you kill their royal person. (prince, princess, queen, or king. The opponent only chooses one to play with.) or an alternative win condition that is unique to each monster.
      You do all the actions with cards drawn from a personal deck. It is not a deck builder. The decks are not big and are meant to be moved through, but big enough where you dont get the powerful cards often enough.
      For 30~ dollars the base game is worth it. You get 4 monsters and 4 different types of royals (that have diff abilities). It is a fast, fun game. I really enjoy it. I have not yet played the expansion.
      Maul peak is a stand alone game that looks like ot adds difficulty and more abilities for both sides.
      The only part you need to get used to is the board is a diamond, not a square, the corners face you. It helps putting the card over the board, so you can see (dont show opponent unless using it), so you have a better understanding of where youre going/attacking. After the first game youll hardly make a mistake.

  • @lexta13
    @lexta13 4 месяца назад +8

    One thing I wish this review talked about more is player count. Especially for co-ops like this, the experience can differ wildly from "almost impossibly difficult when played solo" (Arkham Horror: The Card Game) to "very long sessions when played at four players" (Earthborne Rangers).
    For this one, I would realistically be playing solo. (My group is booked for other games, already.) Is it worth it? Does it work well in two-handed solo, maybe?

    • @jotaf98
      @jotaf98 4 месяца назад +1

      It's definitely not a lot of overhead for two handed solo, you only have 3 cards in hand (plus extra mechanisms for complex climbers). I mostly play 2p and it's a blast!

    • @JonTripp115
      @JonTripp115 4 месяца назад +1

      FWIW I've only played it Solo and 2P. Both ways games were about an hour, maybe less, and that was while we were learning and checking the rulebook. The official solo mode is a modified two-hander, where you control two Climbers with a single shared deck, which keeps the turns and upkeep to a minimum. With more players, turns are pretty nebulous because all Climbers may take (some) actions or be targeted on any player's turn, so downtime is minimal. Rounds advance at a constant pace (5 active player turns per round) so scaling is not much of a factor (ironic for a game about scaling). I hope this helps!

      Number 4, The Watcher, is a step up in difficulty, and requires a rethink of your strategy -- later Leviathans even more!
      Also some climber/class combinations are a bit easier in my opinion, like those with blight avoidance skills. Others are harder -- like if you only have a single card in your whole deck with blight protection when played for AP, you have to hold on to it for dear life.

    I'd have liked to have seen a little more included in this look at the game. It sounds almost like a sales pitch rather than a deeper dive into what the game delivers. For example, and you don't even need to spoil anything: How's the balance? On the easier side, or harder? Does it scale, or have issues with scaling? Just how puzzly is it, on a weight scale? How unique and fun are the bosses? There's over 10, so do they get samey? Is there a big showdown at the end, or a twist in the middle? How's the game solo? How's it in a group? How much time per player, or is there a lot of downtime? Is there a narrative to follow, some story or theme? How well is that written, how immersed do you feel defeating these titans? Etc.

      I think broadly our channel isn't geared towards these kinds of very linear and specific breakdowns - it's not our style! We tend to want to get across the ideas of the game to a broader audience rather than get deep into specifics. I think you can also broadly intuit a lot of the answers to these questions from the video itself - like if the monsters got samey or the game was terribly balanced... I'd probably say? Rather than my only complaint being some rulebook quibbles? If there was lots of downtime then that'd be a problem brought up at some point too? If there was a big showdown or twist that I mentioned then perhaps people would call "spoilers"?
      I don't know! We write reviews that we want to see in the world. There's a dozen ways to get the answers you're looking for, many of which are implied in this video. Maybe we're not quite right for you, and that's ok!

      But that's also the idea. Its a table top type game designed by ACTUAL board gamers and lacks all the bullshit that true board game people hate about table top/rp/roleplay based crap and has created a well designed actually interesting game. Something that would be fun even if there were no pictures and everything was just cubes.
      And that is the magic here. Its the first Ive seen in its entire genre that looks like its an actual game. And not some kind of nerd rp fest shit disguised as one. And has so many rules the decision space is irrelevant and nothing matters unless you do the two obviously bad moves.
