      So glad to hear it ❤ Feels awful reading Reddit threads or seeing posts pop up about how much the UK “hates” Americans. I know that a few can ruin it for the majority in any situation, but I try to be extra mindful to break the common stereotypes that I’ve heard.

    Here's a tip. When you book railway tickets, split the journey. Get a ticket to part of the way and then from there a ticket to the final destination. It nearly always works out cheaper. Try some quotes and see if it works in Scotland.

    • @dariengoodwin
      @dariengoodwin День назад +2

      Just to be clear, your train (even if you don't change trains) MUST stop at the station where you have split your fare. Otherwise your ticket isn't valid.

    My Dad was born and raised in Glasgow, an accent he maintained all his life. I found it very difficult to understand him when I was young, possibly given that I was brought up in Hampshire, south of England. I also remember going to stay with him when I was 20 and met my half sister. They lived in North Wales but her mum was from Liverpool…I made a statement that I liked their accent. When she said “no yours is lovely”, I replied with “I don’t have an accent!” That was the first time I realised we all have accents!

    Happy Birthday Zak!
    Long distance moves are so complex even within your home country- I am in awe of people who can pack up and cross continents for a new life. As you've described her, and previously, there is so much to think of and navigate through! Having kids in school, and doing other regular activities, is a great way into local society!
    Long distance train fares really need to be booked 10-12 weeks in advance in order to access the cheapest fares. Once you get within about 4 weeks of travel date you'll find the costs have rocketed! We've been meaning to travel across England to visit family for nearly a year, and every time we think about going, we've missed the 10 week price window for the time we've selected.

    When looking for train tickets dont always look at the first price. From Edinburgh to London you have a choice of 3 operators. Lumo would be the cheapest.
    I look at the national rail website look at prices then see if its cheaper to split ticket it.
    Train line website often split tickets.
    Previously we have travelled to euston split ticketing either for example
    Split tickets on same train.
    Changing trains at crewe.
    Having an hours layover in birmingham on the way to an nfl game.
    I often look to split ticket to look for cheaper options.

    The bit about the accents is so true! I'm American and my husband is from Dublin. I moved over in 2004 and shortly after, we relocated to Derry, NI for his job. That was a HARD accent for me to get used to. I think it took a good year or so before I felt comfortable doing things like calling and ordering a takeaway on my own LOL. And true also about the American stereotypes. I'm originally from Minnesota, so because of my accent people assumed I was Canadian, and made comments about Americans. Not in a mean way, more like banter. And expat communities are great! My adjustment to living here would have been much more difficult if I hadn't have found online forums with people who had done it before me.

    The water proof breathable clothing is what you really need, water resistant is for going to the pub🤣🤣
    Remember, the house buying process is different in Scotland to the rest of the UK, is baffling to me as well...
    Social media is unhelpful in changing attitudes to the stereotypical image of anyone. 99.9% of Americans I have met have been great, but boy does that 0.1% stand out....

    If you’re travelling by train in Scotland there are £1 tickets for the children who need to pay, cheaper than using your railcard. You need to buy those at the station not online. Also, have you been to Sam Burns’ Yard at Prestonpans. It’s a treasure trove of vintage/2nd hand.

    I was just offered a RUclips video about an £18 London to Edinburgh train on Lumo.
    What you said was of course true. On the day full price fares are expensive. One hint however is that you can get an advanced fare as little as five minutes before the journey.
    We missed our train home due to a flight delay and managed to get a new ticket while going through passport control. The advanced fare was £19 while the full fare was £60.

Whose vids I watch to see their reactions to stuff that seems the same but is not in some respects. Aboout our roads. you have to remember that these are sometimes thousands of years old. The more "straighter" roads would be of Roman origin. the others have grown from walking paths between ancient villages and places of work while others were farm tracks used to drive animals or carry carts.

    I have friends from Texas who came over to Scotland for a holiday and hired a car. I warned them it would be a difficult drive but they laughed it off, claiming they regularly drove many hundreds of miles to visit family in different states and it would be no problem for them. On their first day they drove less than 100 miles to where they were staying the first night and I met them the next day. They had 1000 mile stares. Driving a manual on the wrong side of the road was the least of their worries, roundabouts, very narrow and twisty country and mountain roads with tractors, locals driving like Colin McRae, and sheep and deer on the road finished them off!

    • @SimpleScottishLiving
      @SimpleScottishLiving  День назад

      Thank you! So, some electrical item will work. Anything that uses a USB cable for example is an easy switch over as you can just get the UK USB power adaptor and you are good to go. Some of the smaller things like toothbrushes or other electrical items that use the two prong US plug can often be converted just with a travel (or shaver) adapter. The one thing you need to look at is what voltage the device accepts. We brought over a computer monitor and computer and just switched over the cable (using a kettle plug) as they both had a voltage range of 110-230V. The printer we had only accepted 110V so even using the correct plug would not work. You can also get step down power transformers for these items, which do work as I've used one with some of my power tools, however you do have the inconvenience of the step down unit. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

    Zach, did you refer to yourself as having a Scottish accent? No offence intended but I don't hear any sort of British accent at all. Perhaps I should watch the video again to find what I missed but did you move to the US as a child? As an Englishman who moved to Ireland I can empathise with your struggles with accents. For quite a while I was uncertain if some people were talking in English or Irish! Especially old guys who had drunk a few pints😄! As you mention, accents can change within a big city. I've wrote this before on RUclips, that in England the place where I lived, the place I worked and the county's small city very roughly formed a triangle with the places about 8 miles apart. All 3 places had slightly different accents. It was not obvious but there. An outsider to the area wouldn't have noticed. People generally don't change their accent after the age of 7 or so unless they consciously try. I've no Irish accent but have picked up some of the speech idioms. "Don't be doing that". " Fierce to the world" etc 😄.

      Yep, Zach was born and raised in the Edinburgh area. He moved to the states around 24yo and joined law enforcement. It was a highly contentious period, so our best guess is that he subconsciously didn’t want to stand out, and his accent faded. Who knows though?!

    The comment about searches - you may find it better to use a VPN and set your 'home country' as the UK. That way you will be exposed to what is available in the UK.

    The cost if rail tickets from Scotland to England is daylight robbery, infact even going from Glasgow to Edinburgh is horrendously expensive, I jumped the bus for 10 quid

    My husband was born in england so I believe he has dual citizenship. His mother lived there and his dad was stationed there during Vietnam. Would it be easy for us to become citizens because of this?

      It would be pretty straightforward to get a family visa if you can meet the financial requirements based on him alone. Www.gov.uk and search family visa will lay everything out for you. Please email us if you need more help!
