Thank you so much for such excellent video. I just got today my first angle grinder from HF and despite seeing 7-8 videos, NONE of them explained as clear as you did on how to attach the different disks, paying attention to the flange nut orientation plus emphasizing on safety at the same time. Awesome. These prior RUclipsrs should learn from you on how to make an excellent set up video. Just subscribed. Bravo Zulu!🙂
Excellent presentation with valuable information for inexperienced grinding wheel opertors like myself. This was very helpful and probably prevented me from injuring myself or others. Many thanks!
Super helpful, exactly what I needed! I was having a loosely spinning blade, turns out the dimpled nut was facing the wrong direction. Thank you for the help!
Hey Rob thanks so much for explaining how to put on a disc with an arbor nut already attached I have been looking for a video that explains that . Awesome
New to angle grinding and this really helped to show the different configurations of media, arbor size and retaining nuts. That was confusing for me. Thank you!
Great tip about the safety guard - it needs to be aligned then secured toward the hand that will hold the grinder (on the side the handle is mounted on). It is there to protect the hand holding the grinder should you slip. To protect your eyes always wear ANSI protective eye shields/goggles when operating a grinder.
You are using a type 27 guard with type 1 wheels. That is why you are using washers are shims. You need to swap out the guard to a type 1 guard to use type 1 blades. Once you do that you will be a lot safer and you don't need to use any washers as shims
Excellent video. I have one thin wavy/fragile looking circle piece you did not address. Any clue as to what that is? I have never used a grinder. Just using it to polish with 4” felt polishing wheels.
Thank you for this, I am also a newbie, using a cutting wheel and couldn’t get the disc to not spin, the directions of the tool indicated one way only to use the arbor nut but since it was thin it would spin, flipped it over and tight and ready to rock. Just got to keep the fingers intact now or the wife will kill me.
The first thing imma use my angle grinder for is to cut my cars aftermarket plastic sideskirts shorter. I bought a metal cutting wheel... I think it might have been overkill but i might need it in the future. Wish I had a garage. Really sucks to be doing projects in my apt living room. But anyways thanks for the info
I'm new to angle grinders, so the video was very helpful to me. Thank you! Edit: At 4:26 you take what looks like a common flat washer, and call it a shim. You put it under the usual shim that has the square recessed notches on one side, which transfers the spin of the arbor to the wheel. Two questions for anyone who knows angle grinders: [1] Where does one get that "flat washer" shim? (The hole in an SAE 5/8" washer is actually too large.) [2] A flat washer-like shim does not have the recessed notches that lock in, so what keeps the cutting/grinding disk from slowing down or failing to spin properly?
I was thinking the same thing and also a new user. I'm guessing there must be an adapter available just for this purpose. Otherwise a flat washer could be modified with groves or nothes using the angle grinder [I think].
Don't. Adding a shim to move the wheel down is not necessary. This is the first time that I've seen someone think it is necessary or desirable. That said, you can purchase a spacer if you measure the shaft diameter. But the fact that you cannot find "grinder spacer" should cause you to wonder about the necessity, given the fact that there are hundreds of millions of the grinders in use worldwide. Conversely, if you deem them the next most popular addition to the grinder, setup your tooling and mass produce them.
@@tamaica7770 Why do you think you need it? Does something not work? I've never needed to add a washer/spacer to my grinders, or any that I've used. Remember: safety first. Use equipment modifications engineered for the grinder you're using.
raised shim and raised nut for thick disc, right? i mean, from what i understand in 3:09, to maintain the think disc, i need to place a bulky side to support the hole size
I bought a cutting wheel and it came with 2 washers. Not sure if I need them, they seem redundant as the wheel size fits snug with the size of my arbor. Any thoughts ?
They might be spacers to fit different size arbors than yours. The inner rim of the wheel should fit a feature on your arbor nut or the existing spacer that came with the grinder. It shouldn't ride directly on the threads of the arbor. If it fits snug and runs without vibration, you are probably good to go. Just be sure to wear your safety gear. I always wear a face shield when using a cutoff wheel on a grinder. They have a tendency to shatter if you run them wrong, so keep that guard on and stay safe!
My arbor nut keeps spinning off even though I hold down the spindle lock and use the tool to tighten it. Scares me to death. I was using a diamond cutting wheel on a 3"x .25" piece of marble with only the two nuts (above and below the blade) the tool came with. Is it simply not tight enough? They aren't supposed to unscrew as the blade turns.
Check the orientation of the bottom spacer and the nut. Typically you want the bottom spacer to have the raised rim facing out from the tool (registering the hole in your wheel on center). Then make sure the nut has the raised rim also facing out away from the disc. There should be a slight depression on one side of the nut to avoid bottoming out on your bottom spacer and bypassing the disc. Diamond wheels tend to be thin, and I suppose it is possible for a no-name import grinder to not have enough clearance to bite down on the disc, but I’d be very surprised if that was the case. Bottom line: any disc you put on the grinder should only spin with the tool’s arbor when properly installed. And yes, it should only get tighter as the tool engages the work. If the disk is rattling free while in use, something is not right and you will need to sort it out before using it safely.

thanks a bunch. i am very new with angle grinders. glad there is material like yours to learn from. im almost ready to put my angle grinder to work

Straight and to the point. Thanks.
shims are glorified washers and nuts are nuts, got it. on a real note thank you for this video, learned a lot!
Good one👍
Reeeeespect. Straight to the point and thorough. 🙏 answered all my thoughts and concerns

Thank you, for excellent, clear, simple, display & explanation.
This video is exactly what I needed man thank you
Super helpful. Learned so much I needed to know.
Very clear and right to the point. Thank you
Instruction was clear as glass. Thank you.
Thanks man. I have some cutting to do on a flat bar with type 27 and I plan to go full MAGA on the bar with my Dewalt D28402 and type 27 disc.
Thank you for explaining that lock-button

Thanks Rob, great explanation
Great work. Best video I’ve seen.
Very concise, thorough and precise. Thank you, indeed.
Good demo, you are good at explaining.

What a great vid. Very well explained.

I learned some good stuff about grinders.
best video on the subject.
I have a diamond cup grinding wheel that is threaded/ do I need a nut on top or no? I I don’t like how far mine sticks out.
GREAT PRESENTATION. THANK YOU!
yeah thanks man, i was worried putting that in unthreaded grinder on cause the nut just wasn’t secure enough for my comfort

You probably figured this out by now, but that unthreaded washer he calls a shim comes with every grinder you buy.
@@timrich6755 same question! Do i need the washer that he called a shim at the 4:26?

Very helpful tips 👍
Please provide safety operations of this angle grinder. Thanks
Does that wrench have any use at all or is it just there to take up space? Thanks for the video.
