At about 1:15, there seems to be a step missing. Are you opening up a second version of the file? Deleting a layer? Any help is appreciated.

I think what they did is after they saved that black and white version as 'displacement map' they basically deleted all the changes to get back to the original image then worked off it. So they used the same file
