In this After Effects motion graphic tutorial we are going to be taking a look at how to properly use the Displacement Map effect in After Effects. This includes the 50% grey method for a 0% displacement. Additionally, we cover a few really useful methods for Displacement Maps such as using a video as a displacement map for a flag wave and creating your own 2.5d animation with a 2D face image.

Adobe After Effects 17.0 (AE 2020) is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Systems and used in the post-production process of filmmaking and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing, and animation. It also functions as a very basic non-linear editor, audio editor, and media transcoder.
CINEMA 4D R21 is a 3D modeling, animation, motion graphic and rendering application developed by MAXON Computer GmbH in Germany. It is capable of procedural and polygonal/subd modeling, animating, lighting, texturing, rendering, and common features found in 3D modeling applications.

Displacement map is one of the best native effect in AE. Thank you so much for digging into it and sharing your discovery with us. You're amazing !
This just salvaged a composition I was about to scrap for a much longer approach. Thank you so much.
Thanks you ! You telling me that gray is the "0" for displacement really helped me with stuff I thought were bugs before ! Also, using the ZDepth pass for displacement sometimes gives really cool effects
Really great vid! Would love to see more 'explainers/understand better' tutorials from you about other AE effects.
I've watched your every single video. And I really learn allot. Thank you so much for having these kind of tutorials. I'm also doing some these kind of work. Love you from Pakistan.
Thank you MOBOX for this very detailed explanation. I always like to learn how something functions the way it does
Damn. Never really thought about displacement maps in that way. Thanks for the tips and introduction to those amazing artists; my face was locked on "whoa" expression the whole time I was scrolling their Twitters.
Also can you please make a detailed tutorial or point me in the right direction about to exactly achieve those waves and ripples from displacement maps? I'm having trying to figure out exactly how you made the map ripple and turned it into that wave that interacts with the ball drop. Thanks in advance. Love your stuff.
If you are familiar with 3D, then you know displacement map interprets the values in the way that darker value "pushes" the vertexes inward while lighter value "pulls" the vertexes outward, and of course 50% gray should not displace the surface at all. Same thing should happen in AE.
Excellent tutorial - Displacements Maps, now we have a good idea on to how to use them, thank you very much!
Really great video - way more than I was expecting. Thanks
This is absolutely mind blowing, thanks for sharing.
Exactly what I needed to watch! Thanks!
wow, didnt expect to discover that i`ve really been using it wrongly this whole time.. thanks! Great tutorial
Thank you so much!i learned that displacement maps excist and that i have to learn a lot.i couldnt figure out how they work but i will.thanks dude
Thanks so much for sharing this, super interesting stuff
Thank you for very informative breakdown with examples :)
Thank you so much for such a cool tutorial
great information brother . thanks
Very informative video, thanks !
Wow this is incredible. Very useful. It's like a cheat code!
Thank you for this!
Love love this I understood so much
Very helpful. thank you.
you have just blown my mind!!!!!!! masterrrrrrrrrrrr
knew about grey = neutral, got blown away by having never thought about using posterized gradients to have the look in 1:08
sory my ignorance, this is a new video and i was the first one, hahaha i never was first anywhere...displacement maps have a great potencial, this black&white world is so complx when you want to make it matte, the mechanic behind is simple, but the potencial is so huge !!! just wow.
Hot durn... this was SUPER helpful! THANK YOU!
You can create a depth map of a photo using neural filters - the check box at the bottom of the window.
The tip about 50% grey is so so helpful! I was looking for that!
thx u ! rly helpful
for the displacement maps in photoshop for the potraits and all is there any action to difference their highlights and shadows or we have to manually do that by pen tool;
I feel personally attacked that you think I was using them wrong, haha, love the video though, that wave splash is a nice idea I'm gonna have to use
Amazing!
Thank you!
Thank you so much
Wow i didn't realize that. Are there any add ons that work more like a depth pass, ie how you thought it should work?
Could you please make a detailed tutorial for the first example (sphere falling into water)?
Hello, that is really awsome info, I'll surely use it a lot more!
I did used the effect to make a looking through glass effect (on an image) but when I move Cell Pattern (the cracked effect) it turns the animation in jerky movement. Is there something similar I can use? maybe Displacement map isn't the right effect in this case? Thank you!
Can you please link some videos for the one in this video where the face was given that weird 3D effect?
I’m not sure what to search but that’s the effect that I was looking for
Hey Mike, you forgot to change the text in the lower third graphic.
Cool vid by the way.
Sadi
You’re are awesome 👏
THANKS!!!
can you please show us how you made that melte d " O " in your intro ? thats looks so cute, simple and astonishing, would be awesome if you can make some 3 min video, just for the O and the effec ...you showed some melted effect few videos ago but it isnt come from the letter itself, you showed us how it comes fro a water surface or something, hope you can respond here and maybe you can write if its not to much to explain, would be thankfull for all, thanks sir ! following you long time
Grelt video
The thing with the wave is insane^^ Can you do a tut on this?
amazing
Well... I don’t even have words...
Except thank you
And subbed
Cool!!!
what is diff. between dispalement map and cautics???
How to do a radial displacement map distortion? From the inside out?
whats the background song in the beginning?
Wow 🎉
I always thought black meant no displacement and white meant more, that explains why I always see whatever element i'm displacing shift a little off centre!
Exactly the same here, always struggling with glitch stuff going to one side instead of centered
So no one in the comments realized their effect was completely screwed up when they used Displacement maps ?
For anyone that didn't know the principle of Displacement Map, try to test the effects you plan to use prior to using them. It could really surprise you !
I think most people used them with fractal noise so they couldn't really tell it was wrong, but at the same time didn't feel like they were in control.
here's what you miss big time, you could tell the direction and the rate it shift with color. you could make it shift in any different direction you want, at a different rate, at the same time with 1 slide, just watch "advance displacement map" by videolancer
Whats the name of the track at 07:05
seven minutes can save you seven decades
Thank you for your time. Subscribe coming your way

Woopsie
na AE only supports radial displacement. witch is only useful for some things. if you are looking to do a 2d to 3D stereo conversion using depth maps. its useless cause you need XY displacement.

wow i'm triggered. should be called "i'm using displacement maps wrong". nicely clickbaited, you got me!
You can now create the displacement map for photos with Midas... no more painting by hand :) you are welcome :)
50% is mid tones
0% dark
100% light
with all respect i understood nothing you just made it more confusing lol
Basicly he thought displacement map was Black = No displacement and White = Full displacement, while actually it is Black = Negative Displacement, Grey = No displacement, White = Full Displacement.
wtf
The only one who is using it wrong is you lol
Im not sure if you were genuinely interested in the listener understanding....
A rule that i value is a 5 year old or 95 year old should be able to effortlessly explain what was presented
boo
Nobody helps by teaching the basic behind why each step is being done. Only DO THIS>>DO THIS>>>DO THIS>>>PUT 50>>>>PUT 194>>>> like a freaking formula. Gives no room to understand why and what each tool or setting is doing....so that we could use our own creativity.....instead this is someone elses project and were just following along. Instead of this.....shove this here....slide this here....mark as matte....set matte to luma....55...180....270....go and tick mark all these....choose vector.....34....89...23. Thats all done !. With this we can only recreate and copy his scene or project...as opposed to using it in our own way.
Im not saying the OP is bad with his video..... but it looks like hes talking to experts and pros and is satisfied if they can understand. So can someone here guide me to some TY channel that teaches in that way.... the underlying why they are putting something below there and for what reason kinda. It will be super helpful. Thanks
Great video, thanks! :-)
