My favourite is the two-parter "Mystery Man".
Banner (already injured and bandaged up, with amnesia a, and his voice scratchy from smoke inhalation from the previous accident he was in) shares a plane with reporter Jack McGee which crashes in the forest.
Banner and McGee then have to work together to get out of the forest and get home when a bushfire starts.
It was great because it deep dived into the Hulk - McGee rivalry (McGee wants to capture the Hulk as he sees it as the "Story Of The Century" and it will give him journalistic integrity if he can prove the Hulk, and write for a real newspaper), and it is the episode where McGee discovers that a man transforms into the Hulk (though he doesn't know who the man is, as Banner's face is still bandaged).

A little trivia. The First is Kenneth Johnson's least favorite 2 parter. Johnson wanted Banner to be the only Hulk, but CBS wanted, or demanded, a King Kong vs. Godzilla type episode. He agreed to this on one condition, the evil hulk totally dies.

What about the weird episode that actually did not even feature Bill Bixby?
There was an episode ("Can't remember the name of it) where a new editor on Jack McGee's paper pulls Jack from the Hulk story and most of the episode is him trying to convince the editor that the Hulk exists.
It is weird because Banner hardly in it, and when he is, it isn't Bill Bixby, but a stunt double, a stand in and stick footage.
The reason is that, Bill was undergoing knee surgery after he injured himself in a stunt on set. So they had to plan around him.
Ferrigno still appears as the Hulk, but when Bixby appears, it is stock footage.

    • @jasonbriggs2559

Yes, the episode you are referring to is called "Proof Positive" (Season 3, Episode 13). It is a really good episode because the entire episode is from Jack McGee's point of view. Using the stunt double to play David was perfect, because it is how McGee views him as John Doe.

I haven't seen these since they were aired back in the day but I remember the unvavering formula of Banner's transformation exactly twice per episode, roughly at the 20 and 40 minute marks. Much like Japanese historical drama Aberembo Shogun wherein there is a structured showdown with the villain at the 40 minute mark of every episode. Great show, li'l 7th grade me adored it. Love Bill Bixby, his heart shines through in everything he did. At 3:10 in this video it should be pointed out that no passenger plane flies 100 miles above sea level. 7-8 miles, maybe.

    • @adogawa1974
      @adogawa1974 5 месяцев назад +7

Never was a fan of how they did Professor Hulk. The thing that made this Hulk so good was how strong he was for his size. I remember about this time they had hulk with Banner's mind in control in the comics (not a merged Hulk, that came in the 1990s). The one problem was that the Hulk was still inside and wanted out but banner had "caged" him. You know Hulk, you cant contain him, and in the comics, he broke out at his wedding of all places.... yeah Hulk and Banner never have good luck. I can say this, Banner in the Marvel movies will lose that merger.... it wont last. That's one thing about Hulk in general, things never end well for him. This TV show, the movies, the comics, Hulk just isn't that lucky.

I think another great episode was the Pilot.
I missed the pilot episode on the first run (as it was shown in the cinemas here in Australia when I was a child, and the movie restriction precluded me from going).
But having got the box set and finally seeing it, I declare it to be the best pilot episode of any TV show ever. It was awesome and explained a lot of things (I always wondered why Hulk recovered so quickly from injury) and why Banner only ever attacked in self defense (The monster is a manifestation of the personality who it inhabits, so Hulk won't kill because Banner won't kill).
That also explained the episode "The First" where Banner meets a previous guy who became the Hulk, but a killer because the guy who becomes him is evil.

A little trivia. The actor who played the half transformed Hulk (Demi Hulk). In the “Prometheus” episode, was Ric Drasin. He was a wrestler / bodybuilder in the 70s and 80s. He was part of the “Golden Age of Bodybuilding”. He trained at the infamous Venice Beach Gold’s Gym. He also designed the famous logo. He designed the World Gym gorilla logo, as well.

Ric Drasin played the half-transformed Hulk in wide shots that showed the creature's relative height and physique. (There are a few moments in which Drasin makes facial expressions that are spot-on for the expressions that Ferrigno would make as the Hulk). For close-up shots where extended moment-by-moment facial expressions and Banner's internal emotions were the point of the shot, Bill Bixby (in makeup) played the half-transformed Hulk.

This was a favorite series of mine in the 1970s, one I tried my very best to never miss. "Promethsus" was a great episode, as were all of these, really. "Married" should have been included somehow -- a top 15, maybe? "The Snare" is one my top five episodes also. Bradford Dillman was always a great villain. "The First" is probably the fav or many fans; I always thought of Dell Frye's original Hulk as a version of the Abomination from the Hulk comic series. Harry Townes's performance was great. Bixby's tears at losing the cure by the skin of his teeth, while he transforms can't be topped. My late Mom ( miss you still, mama) was a big-time fan of Bill Bixby's, and we would sometimes watch this series together, 'though some might say that I was a bit old for that maybe. Of course, she liked "Kolchak : the Night Stalker" as well if want to cover THAT '70s classic (hint, hint).
Great video, and hope you'll do a follow-up.

  • @tranya327

-I agree with those stating that one of this list's entries should have been bumped, so that 'Married,' the second season opener, could have made the list. 'Married' is the best overall episode of the series.
-Actress Mariette Hartley won an Emmy award for 'Best Dramatic Performance' for that episode. I believe that this is the first time that anyone connected with a science fiction-themed show won an Emmy for a non-technical category.
-'Married' also has some amazing visuals: Director Kenny Johnson shot some difficult scenes in a featureless desert outside Brawley, CA. The shots represented visualizations occurring inside Banner's mind, while under hypnosis. This was a clever way to get get Banner and the Hulk into the same shot, and to portray Banner's struggles to contain or control the creature.
-Another notable episode is 'Dark Side' in which Banner accidentally unleashes a dark personality when his attempt to control the creature with drugs, backfires. We are treated to strange flashes of activity inside Banner's mind, represented by the stereotype of primitive jungle savages on the hunt.
-Still another interesting episode is: 'Bring me the head of the Hulk," which Bill Bixby directed. The premise: an exceptionally clever and resourceful mercenary (bounty hunter?) makes it his mission to trap and destroy the Hulk. The mercenary is played by an actor who had played a different character in the previous season's 'Broken Image.' The mercenary's assistant, is played by the main antagonist from 'A child in need.'

the two things I remember most about this series is that the show never lived up to the opening. At least not for a young kid who was a big fan of the Hulk in comics. I wanted the hulk to fight the Abomination. I did not care so much about his feelings.
The second thing was the at the end of just about every episode Banner would be walking away from some town or place and that music would come on. It was all so depressing but fun to talk about now. I have made fun of it all sometimes when leaving with people who know the series. I will just humm some of the music as I leave.

I really like and pretty much agree with your list, although "Married" (Season 2, Episode 1) is my very favorite episode of the series, only behind "The First" and didn't make your list. I consider it, along with "The Psychic" to be the saddest and two of the best acted episodes of the series. I also have "Interview with the Hulk" (Season 4, Episode 15) on my list. That episode contains one of Bill Bixby's best performances. While it isn't often mentioned on lists of favorites, "Escape from Los Santos" (Season 2, Episode 10) is another one of my own personal favorites. 😊

Nicholas Hammond was a bit too old for the part of Peter Parker/Spiderman, but, to be fair, it was pre-empted a LOT, and moved from one tie-slot to another. Had it a better chance, who knows?

1:57 no, he didn't. He was studying the abnormality in peoples DNA that allows for feats of superhuman strength, and found a connection between the test subjects and gamma sunspot activity. Since the abnormality was higher in his DNA, but was low on the day his wife died, he decided to test this theory by exposing himself to a controlled gamma injection. But the problem was the unit he was using had been recalibrated, but not properly measured, and therefore received an overdose.

She said her last words in the Hulk's arms and then she dies. The episode ends with the Hulk just standing there holding her. No background music, no anything. It could be different to watch because the acting was so good.

David Banner's exposure to the gamma rays was bugger all to do with trauma. He spotted that humans showing abnormal strength under stress all shared a rare quirk of DNA, which he also shared, but unlike him, they all did it during periods of high solar gamma ray activity due to sunspots. He exposed himself to what he thought was three hundred thousand "units" in an effort to duplicate the effect, but forgot the stress component for some weird reason. Also, due to a lab technician amping up the lab equipment earlier in the day but not yet measuring the radiation equipment, Banner unintentionally gave himself around two million "units". The next time he had a temper tantrum the DNA quirk, now massively mutated due to the radiation dose which should have killed a half dozen people outright, combined with the release of chemicals like adrenaline and epinephrine and caused the metamorphosis.

1:50 "In order to escape the trauma"? Yeah, no. That's not his motivating factor at all. Even if he finds way to tap into people's hidden dormant strength, his wife is still gonna be dead. If anything, this project he's working on allows him to wallow in his trauma. Also, there's this whole thing about mislabeled gauge on the gamma thing that gives him a dose that's like 20 times higher than he intended.
This is pretty basic stuff here. A lot of this is actually covered in the narration of the opening credits that play before every single episode.

    • @tranya327
      @tranya327 12 дней назад

The 'Bruce sounded gay' thing, is an urban legend. I have the DVD with Kenneth Johnson's commentary, in which he goes into it. The primary reason is that Johnson had a problem with the alliteration inherent in "Bruce Banner." Stan Lee did this with many of the characters he created in the 1960s (Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Peter Parker...). OK for evolving Marvel comics in the 1960s, But Johnson wanted his version of the Hulk set in the real world, not the world of the 1960s comics and not the MCU that began in 2008. He threw a bone to the classic name, by shifting 'Bruce' to the middle name, which you can see in every episode's introduction as the cemetery shot tilts upward from the headstone reading "David Bruce Banner" to the face of Bill Bixby.

Would such a man be likely to relate the conversation as, "Johnson had a problem with the alliteration I gave my all my main characters, and come to think of it, yeah, that was kind of dumb on my part..." Or would he be more likely to make up a reason that, in decades past, before political correctness would yield a backlash for "that name sounded gay," would let him and everyone else off the hook, with no downside?
So no, Stan Lee wasn't misinformed. He either mis-remembered it, or it he told a white lie.

I read that they changed the name to "David" because "Bruce" sounded gay.

Have heard the same rumour, although it sounds questionable to me.
