  • Dealing with private pain, in public plain.
Did you know that in the United States, over 10.3 million adults have serious thoughts of suicide and/or battle with mental health struggles privately while continuing to produce and perform publicly? Imagine living with a constant, lingering private struggle, while performing in front of the world. This is the truth for many in America.
Studies have shown that exposure to childhood maltreatment and job strain were risk factors for depression. This problem was especially pronounced within the black community, specifically Black women, who reported experiencing an overwhelming amount of these issues, concluding that their experiences are only exacerbated as a double minority in America.
In order to make meaningful change in rates of adult suicidal ideation, we as a nation must not only identify and address mental health conditions early, but must also invest in inclusive social and economic development. Social and economic anxiety have been observed as key elements and determinants of depression and suicidal ideation in Black women and all people of color.
Increasing access to meaningful work and social support within communities and corporations is needed to heal our country and provide the actionable support needed to strengthen a group of people that add immeasurable value to our world. Mental health is a serious issue. You can't change someone's childhood, but you can support them through difficult times :)

For me its people always wanting to recreate people's childhoods because they can. I don't think I'll ever get over my childhood and I don't know how that's going to pan out for me in the future. Everywhere I go or turn to its people trying hard to recreate my childhood at all times

Thank you! Yes, we have to take responsibility for self, 1st. We are NOT superwomen. It sounds like a compliment but it is NOT. Just because we allow someone to push us into an overwhelmed state of living, WE CAN SAY NO.

I truly needed to hear this as a Psychology graduate and feeling overwhelmed and pressured to do something or everything at once with post graduate life. I have definitely been feeling overoverwhelmed especially with my own Podcast called "Simply Nickie Podcast " on anchorfm, Spotify , Google and Apple Podcast. I talk about mental health awareness, self care and love journey, etc. Even I too get overwhelmed and your video made me feel heard and seen. Thank you for this

Like she said, she IS strong - BUT - she’s a lot of other things too, which often get overlooked. My brother, you are one of those who are overlooking everything except for the strength comment. -Assuming that is what you’re referring to? Let’s not judge with bitterness and instead try to be sincerely helpful if at the very least not hurtful and bitter when we hear a sister cry out for help

We are not pushing the myth. I stated that we only had 2 choices...strength or death. We are now not only doing our own inner work but holding others accountable for how they interact with us and dismantling the toxic implicit bias that has hurt us for years. Thank you for watching my transparent, vulnerable talk full of truth and change needed.

No one forces you guys to take on all that extra stuff. You said community, school, kids, church, work, and your husband. When really all you should be focused on is your husband and kids. I'd assume you both work and deal with the children so its not just you. Community and church should be tackled as an entire family not just you as a woman. Are you going to church by yourself? I doubt it. Lastly school is self inflicted. No one tells you to go to school. Thats more stress you added to your life

It's easier said than done, especially when you're not the one experiencing the pain. It's hard to shake off the feeling of worthlessness and undeservingness of help when others offer it. You might feel like a burden to those who have the resources to help. This feeling is particularly strong if it's the first time you're seeking help due to the stigma associated with it.
