This is not what I consider a restoration. This was a clean and paint job. No rebore & piston. You even reused the head haskets. It's prettier than before, but mechanically its unchanged. I would hire you in my shop as a blaster and painter before I hired you as a mechanic.
Mechanically unchanged is an understatement. Has only gotten worse. He even made a gasket for the 2 case half's, increasing play in the shafts even more. My man used the wrong screwdriver for the cluch, and the head didn't even meet the cylinder. So, squish clearance would have been way too big. Technically worsened for sure. I could literally go on an on.

The sand blasting, polishing and painting were nice, I would recommend doing that with your engine if you're tearing it apart fully anyway. The rest of the build however, I do not agree with and to everybody seeing this and never having done a rebuild like this before but considering doing one, I would not recommend at all doing what you see here. Reusing old seals and bearings after dousing them in brake cleaner and whatever leftovers remained in the crankcase is not at all sensible. I can only assume this build was done for someone who wanted to spend as little as possible or very little in general. When 'restoring' an engine like this certain aspects are of course a matter of personal taste, but replacing oil seals and bearings all around is no superfluous luxury. That piston was looking pretty rough too, and the cylinder wall will most likely have shown a similar wear pattern. I this particular case I would have done something about those as well. We didn't even see if you did maintenance on the carb or clutch. As I was watching I was wondering 'Why would he spray steel components with brake clean and not re-oil them immediately afterwards? That risks corrosion forming on them...' And would you look at that, all of the steel components got rust splotches on them at the point of assembly. Into the bargain, the crappy intake clamps and hose weren't even replaced. That stuff's like a few dollars or euros at your local hardware store, if you didn't have better ones already laying around. Nice end result to look at, but pretty poor technical refurbishment.
nice job! also i'd recommend when you tighten down the case bolts you distribute equal pressure, ive accidentally snapped a crankcase bc I didnt tighten the bolts down in a certain pattern.
It's just a cosmetic restoration. He left old bearings, old filter, old beaten up piston etc. Very bad example of restoration, made just to make a nicely looking engine, not nicely working one. Shame.
Nice vid, some remarks: Just hoping you’ve replaced bearings and seals off camera🙈 But why are the gears and ALL other internals covered in flashrust?! Would certainly not feel comfortable putting it back together like that. And why do you bother restoring wear items like the cilinder kit and airfilter? Would certainly never re-use that cheesy old airfilter🫣 And lastly, you should always tighten the crankcase bolts manually, and more important: evenly!! Goes a long way in not destroying the bearings.
Thank you for the excellent video and bringing back pleasant memories. These were remarkably reliable modern tech liquid cooled 2 stroke with automatic oil injection . You could runt hem all day at 80km/hr and not have a worry. Thank you Yamaha.
@@henkkaasjes9837 Thank you . I am Italian and spent much happy time on a Yamaha. Till this video that is one of the excellent features I never noticed.
Hey by the way I would not use that air filter because I have had experience with them before and they don’t filter sand or dirt they do flow good but the flow to good but good job it looks really good for what it was.
I already knew that the gearbox gears will rust when I saw him cleaning them. If you clean your gearbox, at least spray some WD-40 after so it doesn't rust after cleaning. Regarding the sand blasting, there is a more popular and better way to clean the engine cases and it's called vapor blasting, it leaves a smoother and shinier finish that results in oils and dirt not sticking into the porous aluminum. Ps: When you put together the engine halves, you tighten the bolts in cross pattern. And there is no reason not to change all the oil seals when doing such a job, I would also change the bearings, piston/rings/circlips and the needle bearing of the crankshaft. Also it looked like the crankshaft was slip-fit into the bearings, which means the bearing seats are gone. If you make custom gaskets for the cylinder, the squish value has to be mesured for the engine to run correctly.
Am i the only one who is noticing the inside of this engine looks brand new? The electronics look out of the factory on teardown and the engine shows little wear on the inside. Its like he bought the engine brand new, trashed the outside and called it a restore....
This guy might be good at making things look pretty but I'm 15 and even I can see the incompetence that this guy has mechanically, didn't replace any head gaskets or seals and as for putting an engine back together with virtually no new parts and flash rust on the gearing this is utter pain to watch.
Nice video. I wonder why the port on the carb next to the ports for pre heat water was plugged off with a screw? Is that supposed to be plugged as well?
красивый но не более кв без перебора поршень старый цилиндр тоже просто отмыт это что переборка? а звезда это же сюрекен он уже должен быть в утиль как и патрубок впускной который сгнил а его просто покрасили там пора новый делать. beautiful but no more than kv without busting the piston, the old cylinder is also just washed, is that a bulkhead? and the star is the same shureken, it should already be in the scrap as well as the inlet pipe that rotted and it was just painted there it's time to make a new one.
Lots of effort, and done nicely, but some parts with wear should have been replaced... What you did you did nice, but at this stage some parts are better to be replaced not only cleaned. Also if you want to avoid the parts from inside to rusat, after cleaning them put some oil on. (And I recommend for the cleaning diesel oil, and no water. It also helps to prevent rust, and cheap.) But please replace that sprocket, its really the end of its life... :D

No it's called cleaning

Too bad for all the work, but reinstalling old bearings and seals is not possible. That has nothing to do with restoration.

if you are working on an engine with few spare parts available on the market, gaskets can be made using "asbestos paper", just cut to desired shape
