Forget Rovaniemi Santa Claus Park, Kakslauttanen luxury Norther lights igloos and all those touristy reindeer and husky farms that 98 to of 100 tourists do. Book your own cabin instead, far away from everything. I really appreciate A+K for this video, this is far more realistic Finnish/Lappish experience that you can ever achieve in tourist destinations.
@@AdventuresofAplusK You absolutely did. I doubt half of the Finns your age could do what you did. But that's the authentic thing. So sad you were not lucky enough to see the aurora. Kudos for having your sauna debut in the winter in an old fashioned real mökkisauna (cabin sauna) that you heated yourself without unnecessary luxuries like running water. This gives you the right to secretly judge all the RUclipsrs that have visited Löyly or some other modern design sauna spectacle (nice though they can be). Glad you're enjoying our country.
😂😂 love it! This is exactly the experience we wanted! We were so pumped and excited when we booked this months ago! We thoroughly enjoyed Finland and can't wait to visit again! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Huge respect for you guys. I know spending a weekend in an off grid cabin is quite mundane for us Finns and usually the tourists we see are jumping around the touristy attractions. What you guys did got you more closer to what being a Finn is about. Silence, peace, nature and good simple food. Thanks for visiting Finland.

You had a good choice for airbnb-place! Couple of years ago I with my girlfriend had the same place for us for some 4 days. It was great, we had a great time! Even as a finn, I think the atmosphere of Inari lake and cabin itself are truly unique. Also the owner was really great guy and really helpful. We spent our days skiing cross the lake and exploring island. Not forgetting sauna!
It was so nice and such a memorable experience! Yes and the host was very helpful and nice! We recommend staying there to anyone who has the right attitude! Thanks and thanks for watching!
absolutely stunning experience. I would do that in a heartbeat. Quiet, solitude. And you are right, the feeling of doing everything for yourself Well done, thank-you for sharing your enthusiasm for adventure.
Hey Kathryn and Adam, thanks, really enjoyed your video! Looks like you caught some really crisp and lovely heart-of-the-winter days...:) Very glad (and impressed) that you decided to do a really authentic experience of an off-grid cabin. Those were everywhere when I was growing up, but these days Lapland is mostly full of modern or luxury cabins - and while they are of course great, you will miss some major elements of "Finnishness"...:) Enjoy your travels..!
Those luxury cabins do sound nice, but we're so glad we decided to do a more authentic experience. It is something we'll never forget! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Kiitos! Your video is probably the most authentic tourist experience in Finland I have ever seen on RUclips or anywhere else. What you got to do is normal around here and what most Finns do at their private cottages but most tourists never get a chance to experience the true Finnish way of life. I'm glad you guys did! This is how all tourists should do it! I lived for a couple of years in a cabin in the middle of a small forest in southern Finland without running water or any other comforts (except for electric light, an oven and a fridge) because I dislike modern technology, and it was basically just like what people can see in your video. Nowadays I do have running water and a toilet inside the house but seeing what you did brought back sweet memories! :)
Kiitos! That means a lot to us! The experience was very rewarding and fulfilling! We're so happy we got to have it. We hope we can have the experience again one day! Thank you and thanks for watching!
You guys have had more authentic finnish experience in your trip than me in my lifetime as a finn. I must improve my finnishness. Lapland has felt a bit dull to me always, but it has grown on me over the years. It must be the isolation and the sense of calming down. I like your videos and the positivity. These ones lit a spark in me. Keep up the good work!
I love this video. It’s perfect, you did a great job with filming and experiencing this remote cabin and Finnish way of life. Thank you for sharing with us. Also, this looks like a dream experience and vacation 😊
This was such a FANTASTIC video…everything about it…the cabin, sauna, dipping in the freezing lake, rolling in the snow plus so much more…so VERY COOL❣️ Love love loved it❣️
Wow! What a fantastic experience! The great thing about you it’s you choose to go all in. Your content it’s so inspiring. Now we want to do the same. Anne & Eric
Thats the way to experience real lapland. Nice cabin sauna heated for proper degrees and dipping into that icy lake, that gives so much euphoria, even it first feels like pain on ur skin. Also that total quietness is so mind emptying and works like therapy. :)
This was a great video! 🫶 I was holding my breath along with you when you dipped into the avanto 😄 I live in south Finland but been to Lapland too, and once stopped at the foot of a fell at night, where there weren't any other people. The silence... it was something else entirely, it felt powerful ✨️
All my Grandparents were Finnish they came to North east MN to settle in the early 1900s . As did many Finns because it's a lot like Finland so I grew up in the culture. Never was able to go there to see what part they came from. Kauhajoki and Jeppo in the western part. Thank you for this experience I will never get ! So if we get a normal winter here again. You can come to the area north of Duluth MN to experience below zero , northern lights and travel along the north shore of Lake Superior.
Nice change from those more generic videos. Off the beaten path made this video so much more worth the watch! This cabin is the one most people in Finland have where they live or visit during the summer. Then it's mostly about grilling, hammock and a book, sauna and swimming for hours and playing yard games and shooting darts with the kids. And tip of the hat for going swimming. It's type 2 fun, where it feels so good afterwards that it's worth the initial shock.
Thanks! We'd love to make more videos like this, but there's only so many "off the beaten path" videos that fit in the budget. And then after a while those start to become the generic. We had a wonderful experience out there! We're hoping for a place like that of our own one day! The swimming was definitely type 2, but can't wait to do it again!
Nice to see that you guys like the Finnish off-grid cabin, rare people have the guts "Sisua" to spend time in such place nowadays. I personally like to spend time away from cities and technology sometimes. When I have sore legs, in the sauna i raise my legs close to the ceiling and the heat helps.
We loved it out there! We prefer to be away from cities as well, mostly! We hope to have a place similar to this one day to call our own Thanks and thanks for watching!
Finnish sauna is always over 100 celsius. You did the Swedish sauna :D... also the lingonberries and cloud berries are so much better if you just buy real frozen ones and put little sugar on it, the "jam" is nothing like the real one. These are the berries we have in our forests and swamps. Cloud berries are so delicious when freshly eaten..
Amazing video, the more our family travels, the more we want to stay in unique places and this one takes the cake 😂 what an adventure. I Read your newsletter a few weeks ago, glad your home, resting, and getting a routine ( love juice and Toya as well 😂) and gearing up for your 2024 adventures, amazing video as always, take care guys! My preferrence is the snow first, because it is colder than the water (since it clearly is not frozen) making the water almost feel warm after the snow.
You guys have alot of sisu! Greetings from Finland, this video made my heart warm. I felt all those things you did alongside with you while watching this video.
i just watched it again. köpi must be the best host ever! all the time watching i was like "yea, that's how you do it" and i'm a 46 year old finnish wilderness guide who has been in cabins since i can remember
Having moved from the north to Helsinki for uni last autumn, I miss this so much. You did this so "right" that you could even inspire someone who lived in a place like that for 20 years! 😄 IF you are ever planning to come back, whether it is in the summer or in the winter, I recommend visiting Kuusamo, my home town, which is (arguably) much more beautiful and diverse nature-wise than Rovaniemi.
That means a lot to us! We sure hope we can come back one day! We loved the winter, but I think we'd like summer even more! Would love to check out Kuusamo too
This is best travel video of Finland what I have seen. Most videos are just from tourist traps in Helsinki or lapland. Especially your food choices were great and the place ofcourse.
Another wonderful video and adventure. Still got us with that squeaky snow. Thanks for continuing to challenge yourselves and for sharing it all with us.
This is such an awesome video. So happy to experience all this vicariously through your guys! The whole scenery was sublime. Watching you both take a dip in the frozen lake gave me chills😮. Fabulous series.
This was first video I have watched from your channel, and I have to say that this was very well made video. I need to check out more of your videos. And also thank you for making this video, I have to say that this is by far best video about Finnish cabin living I have ever seen.
Pretty awesome video! just for the future wood chopping: please dont give me an heart attack as with the intro and 24:23. you want to typically have an "A" stance so that if the swing misses the trunk below: the axe head wont get stuck in your shin (that isnt a rare accident).
You shuld braise the raindeer meat in closed pot with moisture and butter and typically with hint of beer. You will dry it up very easily if you just fry it on the pan. It’s very difficult to avoid overcooking such thin meat.
@@AdventuresofAplusK I have sometimes used those frozen dishes too. Some brands are ok and some worse, but generally they all benefits greatly from braising.
Every Finn knows the tingling ever since childhood because when you'd been playing outside for hours in the winter as a kid and you get back home in the warm, the body is needles and pins all over. 😄
I didn't really see any other comments about this but in Finland you normally have your own blanket even in double beds, at least I have never personally seen double bed with just one blanket (unless there was only one person using the bed).
When chopping wood you should have your legs spread apart about shoulder width so you're less likely to hit yourself if there's a miss, a glancing hit or it passes through easily.
@@AdventuresofAplusK I did try to search the comments about it. :) My uncle managed to strike himself with an axe and aid and rescue from those remote places is quite hard.
That was so amazing. You looked so pretty in your red coat Katherine with the back drop of snow. Can't believe you got in that water! I think I saw some faint green color in the sky.
Pretty cool how many Finn's made comments. Adam and Kathryn, you should visit northern MN or southern Manitoba some time in the winter for some quality ice fishing. Pretty much guaranteed to catch some fish. You would also have the chance to do some cross country skiing and ride snowmobiles.
Such an amazing adventure! You are such troopers, pushing out of comfort zone and sharing all with your viewers! Absolutely loved this as much as your Alaska/Yukon/Artic Adventures! I am starting to miss your Van adventures with Mona though!
Thank you so much, Barb! We love mixing international adventures with our domestic van adventures. We're gearing up to hit the road again soon and will have lots of van and Kona to share! Thanks for watching
The relaxing effect of the ice bath and sauna combo is more something you attain afterwards having done it rather than relaxing in the moment. I doubt many feel relaxed especially if they dip their heads under the icy water or run barefoot on snow. There's a bunch of modern science that tires to explains it with things like noradrenaline and endorphin receptors being primed by heat and cold but it's really simple enough for cavemen to figure out. Feels good man. Good video. PS. You say 100 years in the past but most Finns have or are at least familiar with summer cabins like this as a second residence so they're relevant in modern times too.
Ok. You guys, this is EPIC! Snow shoeing to your private island?? OMG. The drone shots were so beautiful. Proud of you guys for trying the sauna then ice water. Not for me. LOL. - Michelle

Yes it is wayyy different! It was such a rewarding experience!
I laughed so hard with the ice lounge and snow roll!!! 😂😂
Great job you too! So entertaining!!!!
absolutely stunning experience.
I would do that in a heartbeat. Quiet, solitude. And you are right, the feeling of doing everything for yourself
Well done, thank-you for sharing your enthusiasm for adventure.
It was such a wonderful experience! It was rewarding and fulfilling to do it all yourself for sure!
Such a beautiful video it looks like you had an amazing time. And its fun to see someone else calls to the fish when trying to get them to bite.
haha anything to get a bite! 😂 thank you and thanks for watching!
That's awesome to hear! It was an awesome experience and we want more of it! Thank you and thanks for watching!
Nice to see you really did everyting right at Sauna part. Most people don't know how to use Saunas, but you got the idea. Good job!
Thank you! We loved it!
I love this video. It’s perfect, you did a great job with filming and experiencing this remote cabin and Finnish way of life. Thank you for sharing with us.
Also, this looks like a dream experience and vacation 😊
Thank you so much!
It was so refreshing. We wish everyone could experience it
This was such a FANTASTIC video…everything about it…the cabin, sauna, dipping in the freezing lake, rolling in the snow plus so much more…so VERY COOL❣️ Love love loved it❣️
It was such a rewarding and refreshing experience! One we'll never forget!
Also loved with 100 %.
Hello from Finland! 🙂 That outhouse is pure luxury compare to what i've used in my youth on countryside.
haha it did seem like a luxurious outhouse for sure! Thank you for watching!
Amazing for me as a Finn? You did such things that only few is doing it in today Finland . Nice video . I loved it .
That means a lot to us! Thank you!
Awesome video and like many have already said, Perfect way to visit Lapland. Lake Inari has stolen my heart and one day I move there 😅
Thank you and thanks for watching! We loved the area as well!
The ice fishing hiking, and cabins remind me of our Alaskan RUclips kids we watch. God bless your travels.
Thanks, Karen!
@@AdventuresofAplusK you're welcome 😊 🙏 ☺
Wow! What a fantastic experience! The great thing about you it’s you choose to go all in. Your content it’s so inspiring. Now we want to do the same.
Anne & Eric
Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thats the way to experience real lapland. Nice cabin sauna heated for proper degrees and dipping into that icy lake, that gives so much euphoria, even it first feels like pain on ur skin. Also that total quietness is so mind emptying and works like therapy. :)
It was amazing! Would love to do it again!
Thank you for taking us on such a great adventure! I wouldn't be brave enough to dip in that water, lol. Epic trip.
Thank you! ❤
This was a great video! 🫶 I was holding my breath along with you when you dipped into the avanto 😄 I live in south Finland but been to Lapland too, and once stopped at the foot of a fell at night, where there weren't any other people. The silence... it was something else entirely, it felt powerful ✨️
It's such an incredible place! ❤ thank you and thanks for watching!
greetings from finland.. you guys living my everyday life ! Never realized it looks so exotic.
Hello! We had such a great time in Finland! Can't wait to come back!
We're glad we could share this experience! It's one we'll never forget. We love Minnesota and hope to visit again one day!
So how would you describe the feeling you had maybe 30-60min after you came out of the sauna and dressed up? How did life and your bodies feel like?
Nice to see that you guys like the Finnish off-grid cabin, rare people have the guts "Sisua" to spend time in such place nowadays.
I personally like to spend time away from cities and technology sometimes.
When I have sore legs, in the sauna i raise my legs close to the ceiling and the heat helps.
We loved it out there! We prefer to be away from cities as well, mostly! We hope to have a place similar to this one day to call our own
Thanks and thanks for watching!
Finnish sauna is always over 100 celsius. You did the Swedish sauna :D... also the lingonberries and cloud berries are so much better if you just buy real frozen ones and put little sugar on it, the "jam" is nothing like the real one. These are the berries we have in our forests and swamps. Cloud berries are so delicious when freshly eaten..
haha good to know! 😂 We'll do that next time for the berries. We'd love to come back in the summer and forage for berries and mushrooms!
Xoxo Melissa
Yes those workouts have been awesome! We've loved being home, but we are excited to hit the road soon! Thank you for subscribing and reading our newsletter! It means a lot to us!
Reindeer is not tender. But it is cut into thin slices here so it gives that feeling.
Interesting! It definitely felt tender to us sliced thin.
My preferrence is the snow first, because it is colder than the water (since it clearly is not frozen) making the water almost feel warm after the snow.
We'll try that next time! Thanks!
Awesome video! I must say that a ~60C sauna is a cold sauna haha! Hopefully it headed up a bit more during the filming
Yes we got it to about 80 before we went outside! Next time we’ll go even warmer! Thank you for watching!
When all hope, perseverance, guts and luck has run out, that is when Sisu kicks in.
Love it!
@@AdventuresofAplusK btw you guys showed maybe the most authentic Finland experience out of all those travel vloggers out there.
Thank you! That means a lot to us!
You have to experience the feeling after the sauna for yourself. I can't explain it to someone else. I myself take a sauna 1-2 times a week.
We LOVED the Finnish sauna experience. Can't wait to go back
Very impressed! Authentic Finnish experience. Solitude and sisu.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
You guys have alot of sisu! Greetings from Finland, this video made my heart warm. I felt all those things you did alongside with you while watching this video.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
I am so impressed how well you did everything. Like absolute locals. And you did everything by yourselves?? ❤
If you did everything without a guide you are friggin absolute legends!
All by ourselves! With the very helpful instructions of the owner Köpi. Thank you for watching! 😃
i just watched it again. köpi must be the best host ever! all the time watching i was like "yea, that's how you do it"
and i'm a 46 year old finnish wilderness guide who has been in cabins since i can remember
Would love to check out Kuusamo too
Awesome video!! Sauna is the best. Love that the outhouse had a Donald Duck comic book from 1984 😂
That was a lux outhouse! Thanks and thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your experience. We are in the planning stages of our trip to Scandinavia. Ice breaker cruise is on the list!
Awesome! Highly recommend the ice breaker cruise - so much fun!
🕳🎣🧍♂️ Adam standing there with the tiny fishing rod is sending me 😂😂
Amazing video, as always! 💚
haha it was super cute little fishing rod! 😂 thank you!
This is best travel video of Finland what I have seen. Most videos are just from tourist traps in Helsinki or lapland. Especially your food choices were great and the place ofcourse.
Awesome! Thank you so much! We loved our time there!
I am happy you got to experience this)))
Thank you and thanks for watching!
The sauna. Adam..."my chest and chestnuts hurt" 😂
😂😂
Another wonderful video and adventure. Still got us with that squeaky snow. Thanks for continuing to challenge yourselves and for sharing it all with us.
Thank you, Bob!
This is such an awesome video. So happy to experience all this vicariously through your guys! The whole scenery was sublime. Watching you both take a dip in the frozen lake gave me chills😮. Fabulous series.
We're glad we could share our experience! Thank you and thanks for watching!
And best wishes form Finland again.
This was first video I have watched from your channel, and I have to say that this was very well made video. I need to check out more of your videos.
And also thank you for making this video, I have to say that this is by far best video about Finnish cabin living I have ever seen.
Thank you so much! That means a lot to us!
Thank you for watching! ❤
Pretty awesome video! just for the future wood chopping: please dont give me an heart attack as with the intro and 24:23. you want to typically have an "A" stance so that if the swing misses the trunk below: the axe head wont get stuck in your shin (that isnt a rare accident).
Yes we’ve been told 😊 rookie mistake!
As a librarian I love the small shoutout for books!
Woohoo! We love books!
Wow....might be the best A+K adventure yet. Happy Trails 🐕
Thank you!
You shuld braise the raindeer meat in closed pot with moisture and butter and typically with hint of beer. You will dry it up very easily if you just fry it on the pan. It’s very difficult to avoid overcooking such thin meat.
It was precooked meat and seemed to be tenderized. Luckily we didn't need to do much for it to be tasty. The way you cook it sounds delicious too!
@@AdventuresofAplusK I have sometimes used those frozen dishes too. Some brands are ok and some worse, but generally they all benefits greatly from braising.
WOW! What an adventure! That was so unique! I enjoyed the quiet and nobody around except for the reindeer. You guys are awesome!
It was such a rewarding and fulfilling experience!
Every Finn knows the tingling ever since childhood because when you'd been playing outside for hours in the winter as a kid and you get back home in the warm, the body is needles and pins all over. 😄
It was an amazing feeling!
I didn't really see any other comments about this but in Finland you normally have your own blanket even in double beds, at least I have never personally seen double bed with just one blanket (unless there was only one person using the bed).
Good to know! Thanks for sharing
When chopping wood you should have your legs spread apart about shoulder width so you're less likely to hit yourself if there's a miss, a glancing hit or it passes through easily.
We’ve been told by many by now. Thanks 😅 rookie mistake, luckily we survived
@@AdventuresofAplusK I did try to search the comments about it. :)
My uncle managed to strike himself with an axe and aid and rescue from those remote places is quite hard.
Yeah we were lucky not to have any issues. It would have been a long wait
Beautiful Timelapse of the Northern lights!
Glad the 1am wake up was worth it, even if it was only visible by camera
Same here! Thank you!
That was so amazing. You looked so pretty in your red coat Katherine with the back drop of snow. Can't believe you got in that water! I think I saw some faint green color in the sky.
Thank you! She got that jacket specifically so it would pop against the snow. And after editing the photos, we did notice some green!
I laughed so hard at you guys taking a polar dip. The two Texans. 😂
You guys are awesome doing this
Thank you and thanks for watching!
You did it the right way! Liked and subbed 👍👌🙂
Thank you!
Major props you guys for the off grid adventure. Triple for the sauna experience. Thank you as always for sharing.
Thanks, Jose!
We think that is super cool too! Yes we'd love to visit those places sometime! We will be doing some cross country skiing soon!
Wow, very impressive ice plunge dips, you guys are superheroes from Texas!! And a great video in general, I enjoyed it :)
Haha thank you and thanks for watching! ❤️
Very good video.
I love A Walk aim The Woods! Bill Bryson is a favorite author especially his travel books. Always enjoyable to travel with you two
We enjoyed the book! I (Adam) read it years ago. I'd like to check out some of his other books
Thanks for watching!
I like my sauna little on cold side... But 80° 😊😊😊
Awesome video. I am still trying to warm up after watching. You guys are brave!!!
Thanks for watching!
One of my favorites from you guys... The best seclusion you could ask for ... AMAZING
Thank you!
It was such an amazing feeling!
Ok. You guys, this is EPIC! Snow shoeing to your private island?? OMG. The drone shots were so beautiful. Proud of you guys for trying the sauna then ice water. Not for me. LOL. - Michelle
Oh it was so nice and amazing! What an experience! Thanks and thanks for watching!
This video was wonderful and showed us something most of us will never experience. Excellent video and filling in the cold must have been difficult.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
