Deep warm reds would be nice to see someday. Also would Love to see what a flex triad for the John’s fiery vermillion and a maroon triad would look like.
will this color be released sepretly one day, I feel that warpaint fanatic was kind an incomplete paint range before this color (lacking several oc the colors I like to use) which has been solved with this pint and also like draican said more flexible triads around the colors which does not fit in a triad would be amazing such as one for vermillion and one for maroon.
I think the biggest thing holding back AP is vibrancy. It’s clear that they can do it with the red and yellow. I’d also say that even though the paints are satin, so inherently tougher than matte, they still rub off with barely any pressure when completely dried.
it is an expanded zorn palette, he had the addition of prussian blue and diarylide yellow and a few random other things to meet the needs of GW like blues for the ultramarines.
Thanks for the video. I still dont understand why we need a John Blanche painting range(except so that army painter can sell more paints). His way to paint can be reached with any kind of paint that is already on the market....because he dos it for many...MANY years
Nice review, as usual. I just finished building what's going to be a universal paint set going forward, so likely won't be buying many paints any time soon, but it's always nice to see what new toys we've got available. Surprised Games Workshop never tried doing this before John retired. I swear, working in wargames paint manufacturing and understanding which metals are which colours are incompatible skills. Any grey metal is a "silver", and "bronze", "gold", "brass", and "copper" get thrown onto anything in the yellow-orange-red part of the colour wheel at random, haha
The dark colors are exactly what I want and it's nice they're collected into these two sets. I think these selection of paints are what I needed to finally tackle black armor, like Black Templars or Sisters of Battle. Kind of taking the principle of not using pure white for highlights, but inverted towards shadows.
they are missing some of my favorite colors though, like you said. Pro-acryl has Dark Jade and Vallejo GC has scurvy green; this dark blue-green is missing from Army Painter. You are correct that some very dark colors are missing.
Thanks for the comprehensive review, Stahly! Warpaints Fanatic are my range of choice, in part due to practical considerations -- it is much more competitively priced than TTC, Citadel and, to a lesser degree, Vallejo. The thickness (more on that later) makes them more efficient and the dropper bottles mean that they last longer than Citadel's paint pots, while the steel balls mean that I do not have to muck with the bottle or resort to a paint shaker when returning to a colour that I did not use in a while. Having dipped my toes into contrast/speedpaints after a 10+ year hiatus, I found the flexible triad concept to be quite useful in finding my bearings and slowly building up my collection of traditional acrylic paints. As a side note, I took the "triad" part to heart and got every other colour out of the six available, starting typically with the second darkest -- you can always mix the two closest if you do not want to make a dramatic jump between colours. While thickness of most colours in the range is a good feature in practical terms it is also a quirk that requires extensive usage of the range's medium, especially if you are used to the level of dilution found in Vallejo or AK. It also takes a bit of getting used to before you can apply the range effectively in an airbrush. I do share your sentiment about finding the reds lacking -- I went with the competition with the darker reds when working recently on Blood Dragons and used the lighter tones from the range... mixed together with AP's speedpaint reds to both dilute and tint the Warpaints to obtain a richer colour. Come to think of it, speedpaints are quite useful in that regard if you are hard-pressed for a more saturated colour.
I pre-order both sets from my local shop, mostly because I don't use a lot of miniature paints! I tend to use either Golden Hi-flow and So Flat or Liquitex Inks, but for my new Soulblight Gravelord army I'm going with a mix of this set and a few curated Vallejo Xpress Colours. Thanks for another great vid!
I really like the new AP paint, but you're right about the muted colors in some of the range. I think I will get these Blanche sets, since there are definitely some of those darker shades that I've missed and the red looks sweet
Stahly, How are the core paints that you used for your review a year later? Have any of them started drying? Any speration issues that shaking them doesn't solve/solved badly? How are they holding up/aging?
Yeh, I feel like if you're aiming for grim dark, pro acryl or Ak Gen 3 are still the kings, alongside some oil or enamel washes. Ultimately, the John Blanche tag is just a glorified sales tag, but there are def some cool colors here.
I bought the warpaint swatch since my membership has lasped. Its only 2mb and very blurry, compared to the old one which is 20mb. Maybe you have uploaded some compressed file?
Hey Stahly! Love your content. Are you going to cover the new Turbo Dork range? They seem like a really cool paint line with not a lot of info on how to use them and how they look. Thanks for all you do!
I guess it depends on how you like your models painted, Fanatic is my choice of paints (i bought the whole set) after selling my old citadel paint range. I personally prefer desaturated colours, at least for when im painting 40k. I feel the speed paints make up for it later on with blood red etc. Its really something that you should decide before you paint, for me it works but for others who want eye popping candy red then yeah nah you wont get that
I just saw preorder of those sets as I browsed for Krieg army box, those are quite interesting sets but seems like there is a lot of black-adjacent paints? I'm surprised there is only one yellow paint, and not even bright yellow but more of honey (I would probably use Demonic yellow when building set for myself, but it is very nice color). I guess they plug holes in already existing Fanatic range (which is good!). The vermilion red is nice and pretty spot-on for Blanchitsu. Thank you for review!
I pre-ordered both sets. Army Painter Fanatic has been such a pleasant surprise to me. Between them, Ak 3rd gen and Vallejo's new formulations, there isn't anything else you need unless it's a highly specific color. For me thunderhawk blue and P3 Coal Black are just a must have
You really have to give The Army Painter credit for their marketing genius with these new sets. One common complaint about the Fanatic range was the lack of some darker colours, so not only did they do something to fix that, they also connected it to the popular grimdark style of John Blanche and even managed to get the legend himself to sign up for it. Also I am not familiar with Games Workshop products, but I am pretty sure they never had a dedicated paint range for Blanche or any other of their talented artists. Blanche worked with them for 46 years and I don't think there is anything to celebrate his contribution to the company, aside from maybe an artbook.
You’re spot on. GW have done nothing, I’m personally excited by this product and think it’s amazing they’re paying respect to someone who has defined the image of WH40k to many people over the years.
@ it’s a little more than that though isn’t it, he had direct input into the paints… so hardly just using his name. GW could have done this but decided not to. Let’s be serious here, they’re a company yes aiming to sell products and make a profit. But answer this, when using Blanche’s name they could’ve done it in a respectful manner or disrespectful. You can have your opinion and that’s your right (don’t care what your opinion is) but I think it’s a great product and I’m excited for it. More power to AP and I hope they make a profit for it
@@daddyyu-gi-oh4330 why should GW do this ?Colaborations like this you only see from the smaller companys because they need them to get new eyes to there products(thats the only way why companys do colaborations with anyone) Before he retired he was payed by them everytime, got his own articles in there own magazine and was traveling around the world for them to meet people and fans...and first and formost, his name was put on the map of many..MANY people out there. Both had/have a symbiotic relationship. Without GW he would never be so well known and big worldwide as he is now..and his art put GW on the map for many people. He can still come and go into there offices without exceptions. There are not many people in the world that can do this when the stopped working for a company. He can do this because what he did for the company and gets anknowledged this way by them. And btw. GW released at least one book(i think there where more but i only have the first one) that was completly compiled by him where he could choose his favorite artworks of the line. Really great book. Its called Warhammer 40,000: The Emperor's Will
I want to love the Fanatic range, but their Pure Red dries to an odd shade to me. Which is frustrating as the standard blood red type red is my favorite and I use it for all my armies. The new Blanche paints look interesting, but also don’t paint in that style so I’m undecided about trying them. Admittedly my favorite ranges at the moment remain the old P3 range and Warcolours’ Nostalgia ranges. I’m hoping the new P3 range retains my two favorite colors - Khador Red Base and Coal Black.
I love John Blanches work but not convinced by this set personally, the 'eavy metal/contrast/slapchop styles work so well as they put a lot of contrast and separation into very small, very detailed, miniatures that are usually viewed at a distance. I think this set is tonally too similar, i think the grimdark result may be a muddy blob with not enough highlighting of the features and detail. I like that Army Painter are trying something new, i would have got the sets if they were more my style of painting.
I'd love it if you went into just specific kinds of colors across brands, taking coverage into account. Your very reasonable complaints about the lack of vibrancy in, say, reds here is very easy to explain once you grab this pure red, and put it right next to ProAcryl's Pyrrole Red, their transparent red, or the Atom Ionic red. The issues are well understood by people that have tried the colors: Just see how Vince carefully avoids entire brands for large swaths of the wheel, while he goes deep into them with others. But they don't show why, because sponsors can get mad
..."height" is not pronounced "hate" 😅. It looks like it should, but it isn't. I was wondering why you have several levels of hate for a table, and still endorse it... 😛
i had the worst experience with the fanatic range of all paint range i have used. also why is noone talking about the highly toxic chemicals in this paint range, its labeled on the bottles but with missing hazard pictograms, sure we dont know in what concentration, but still a warning sign would be cool
Not surprising, yeah, I think the only vivid colour John usually uses is red, so it makes sense the only vibrant one is the red Speedpaint. Still, I think his point was that it's an issue across the AP Fanatic line as a whole (fair complaint), so I get why he'd be disappointed that their first expansion to the line barely addressed it.
John Blanche, an artist that is not really that good at painting, but great at marketing his work as profound and groundbreaking. Army Painter, a paint company that's not really that good at making paints, but great at marketing their product as profound and groundbreaking. Truly a match made in heaven

Glad to hear it not a limited edition release. On the fence about buying but they seem like a fun set for a blanchitsu or zorn themed project.
So I’m very happy with the colors so far from my testing, I find these 2 ranges to be noticeably more matte than the rest of the range.
The dark colors are exactly what I want and it's nice they're collected into these two sets.

They have confirmed they will be standalone but later in the year, I think June was possibly mentioned or hinted at
What white dwarf issue number was the Blanchitsu article?

I agree, not crazy about the satin finish, bought a few of the triads to try out but I will stick to my AK, Vallejo and pro acryl.
I didn’t think the individual colors were out yet…
