You’re right! Billie Eilish has a similar cultural significance and impact. And for the naysayers, it’s an analogy (and one made by Dave Grohl no less), the style of music or whether she writes it all herself is irrelevant. She’s playing real music with minimal interference from outside sources…and like Nirvana, she seemingly came out of nowhere and reached the top of the charts, replacing much more manufactured slick pop and hip hop projects made by committee.

    • @RickBeato
      @RickBeato  3 года назад +311

Correct Eric! All this “her brother writes the music is irrelevant”. She displaced all the manufactured Producer driven hip-hop and Pop music while producing music with her brother and little or no outside interference. Obviously her music is not like Nirvana ‘s. There is no comparing Nirvana with Billie Eilish musically. My video goes through the reasons why Dave Grohl would say that.

i'd say Lorde started the 'minimalist/alternative pop' trend more than Billie Eilish but Billie Eilish gained more popularity due to her teen girls fanbase (as you know from pop history, if you have a fanbase that loud [pun intended] on the internet age or not, you have a huge potential to be an instant culture impact in mainstream music world) plus her fashion. Nonetheless, both have decent pop songs that will cater for the mainstream kids to even the alternative music crowd - catchy yet with a sense of experimental songwriting structures. Not a huge fan of both but i read that David Bowie really really like Lorde and even labelled her 'future of music' and ironically, Nirvana duet with Lorde on their Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame performance as well.
and oh, check Billie Eilish parents, they're both from the entertainment industry. As you know, that probably played a role in her success at early age.

Finneas isn’t just a good producer. But an incredibly talented song writer and musician in his own right. She is the face, and the voice, and an unbelievable talent, absolutely (and a great writer, and visionary). But they are a duo. Classically trained and experienced. And they have their finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist. They compliment each other, and I don’t think they could be where they are without each other.

And they admit that. Do you take away Elton John's talent because Bernie Taupin writes most of the lyrics? Paul and John: who is the most talented? It's the fact these duos get maximum creative control from the label when they need to and are able to evolve and try new things and make record after record (as Rick said in a previous video) to grow. Since the 007 song where they had to write a specific style of song under pressure, and Billie was able to belt it live as well, I think she took so much confidence from that. She has mentioned before a lack of confidence in her upper range but I hope she keeps experimenting as the belt (and the lead up to it) is always awesome.

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas have gained my respect as both musicians and cultural influencers. Nirvana was part of a much larger cultural experience known as the ‘Seattle sound’ or ‘grunge era.’ Many comparisons can be made between musicians that become famous for breaking the current mold. The video in which Billie and Finneas rise from a bed, above a teary eyed audience filled with young people, showcase how deep her music has penetrated into the hearts of her fans. There are no comparisons to be made between Billie’s soft and surreal experience and the aggressive nature of my grunge era memories.

I don't get this comparison at all. She is very talented for sure and so Taylor Momsen. She also writes her own songs and it's also actual hard rock. She is also influenced by the Beatles and it shows in her music. So is she the Chris Cornell of this generation? Let's not get carried away with this. Just because someone has extremely great talent and dresses and acts like an angst driven rebellious teenager doesn't mean they compare to someone who completely turned the music industry upside down over night. She's definitely a throwback with sophisticated music and she stands out among the rest. But let's face it there's not much out there that isn't filled with all the things that you applaud her for not doing. Nirvana stood out in an era filled with generational artists. Metallica, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and even Van Halen and Guns 'n Roses. Not to mention that they knocked the king of pop off his pedestal. A monumental achievement like no other. This happens in sports all the time when young talent makes a big splash and they start comparing them to the greats of their sport. It's more of a curse and the artist or athlete should be appreciated for who they are and not who you feel they compare to. This generation needs rock artists and not pop artists who want to be rock stars. I love and enjoy all of your videos Rick, but I have to disagree with you on this.

I’ve been getting all kinds of snobby comments ever since I went on a campaign to try and get my friends to give it a chance. Billie and Finneas have been labelled as the voice of the zoomer generation, and maybe the vulnerable and blunt lyrics match that nihilistic ethos. The funny thing is that it's taken whole teams of producers, songwriters, etc. now to approximate/imitate what she and her brother have masterfully crafted in their family home (like Rick mentioned.) Stylisitically and production wise, yes I see the comparisons between Billie Eilish and Kurt Cobain. But for me, sonically, the single that you played seems like its taking us back more to Coldplay circa 2002 or Modest Mouse circa 2004. Which to me is an era in which music was still great and somewhat organic, even if music was already heavily quantized by that point. That being said, as far as taking us pack all the way to 1991 or 1993. Eh, I dont think we are quite there yet as far as the next Nirvana.

Watching them work in documentaries and/or behind-the-scenes footage is really like watching magic. Neither of them could ever and will never have the relationship they share with anyone else. If you want Billie, then Finneas comes with the deal. Critics of hers who don’t respect her music or her process need to do some research on it, because as a musician myself, it really is like watching greatness happen. They remove all of the nonsense and they just do what makes sense and what sounds good. Billie has always been vocal (pardon the pun) and passionate about not using effects and mixing techniques to cover up her “flaws”, but rather uses them as an afterthought...to give the song whatever it needs to feel complete. I’m 44, I was around for the grunge craze, Kurt was my everything at that time in my life, but I can’t stop saying enough good things about this duo. Color me infinitely impressed. I just don't think the comparison means very much in terms of what they signify about the culture. The eras bear no resemblance to one another. I don't put Nirvana on a pedestal and I've never heard an Eilish song all the way through, so this isn't about my own musical preferences. This generation isn't producing new Cobains any more than it's producing new Michael Jacksons, Springsteens, Princes, or even new Morrisseys... because it can't. Because the proliferation of technology won't allow it. Everything has become fragmented and Balkanized, we're all in our own little worlds with personalized Spotify/Apple Music playlists and earbuds and nobody really cares what anyone else is listening to anymore. Think about it. There was a time when literally everybody you knew owned Zeppelin IV, Dark Side of the Moon, Rumours, The Wall, Thriller, Purple Rain, Jagged Little Pill, and Nevermind. There's no album of the post-Napster era that you can honestly say that about. When's the last time you pulled up to a red light and heard the car next to you blaring the same song you were listening to? Doesn't happen anymore. The shared musical experience is all but dead, nobody is going to replicate that mass cultural impact ever again. That's just something we've lost forever. Comparing Eilish to Cobain is like comparing GVF to Zeppelin. It 's a superficial, apples to baseballs comparison.

      Me: (continues the conversation)
Nowadays, friends and colleagues are listening to completely different artists. And it's never an album. They're just listening to a Spotify playlist and 3/4 of the time, they don't even know the song name or even the artists name. It's sad.

Yes, the relevance of mainstream music has degraded dramatically, and the whole culture have shifted a lot. People are just less interested in mainstream celebrity culture. Billie Eilish also isn't part of any counter culture, she is as establishment as can be. In Billie's defence artist that are signed to big labels are all usually establishment. In theory music should be selling at much greater numbers, but music sales are far down from the 90's. There are a few reason for this.
An artist in the real counter culture is someone like Tom Macdonald. He is really not everyone's cup of tea, but he did recently score a no. 1 song on Itunes, while being completely independent, that is far more interesting then anything Billie Eilish have done. Rick always does a great job, his series on what makes this song great, is one of the best series on RUclips. But he would not have the balls to cover or discuss and artist such as Tom Macdonald.

Based on all the people in their 40s doing reaction videos to songs that came out in the '90s but that they never listened to because they weren't in their chosen genre, I would say that you're at least partially wrong. I think people now care less about genre labels than they did in the '80s and '90s. Back then, if someone said they listened to all kinds of music, people generally thought they had no or poor taste.
It might also have to do with the fact that all the music today sounds almost identical, so maybe the people listening to older music now are just trying to hear different things. The eras don't resemble each other at all, and 1991 was my freshman year in high school, so I know how influential Nirvana was at the time, but with each passing year, people are making Kurt Cobain to be a more and more significant person while he was still alive, and while I can now say, after having 30 years to listen to everything, that he was *way* more talented than I gave him credit for at the time (and I loved Nirvana), it's not as if he was the only person making amazing music at the time. Think of all those famous albums that came out in 1991. Outside of rap, I can't name 10 albums from the past 20 years that are terribly significant.

Additionally, to those of us who lived through Nirvana, the revisionist history being applied to the band and Kurt Cobain is really depressing. Kurt Cobain was very free with his opinions. There are certain things he was very specific about hating. He viewed himself as a negative person.
So, it’s safe to hypothesize that someone of Kurt Cobain’s personality would likely find these comparisons to be amusing, at the very least. It’s actually hilarious when someone is built up as the next Nirvana, and you listen to it and it’s a woman and a drum machine dueting with Justin Bieber.

I've been teaching overseas for a few years now and missed the initial Billie Eilish hype. One day I was doing a placement test for a teenage girl, got to the speaking section and asked her to tell me about someone that she admires. Most students will mention their parents because they think that's a good way to score points, but this girl gushed about Billie Eilish and only knew her from Bad Guy at the time. The way this kid talked about her made me buy in. I play in 3 punk bands, don't really listen to much else usually. But the way this girl can speak to people with her songs, her image, what she makes visible to the world, I totally agree with Dave on this.

Rock is something entirely different. BIllie is just a goth-pop-folk curiousity at this point - the songwriting is very good, and the themes may be similar to the ones that inspired Kurts followers, but this isn't the future of rock because its not rock, LOL. I could even suggest Billie is embodying and writing about the death of rock. I'm not saying this style is NOT the future of music - in fact it could be. But if rock's anger and fight is gone now, is this all thats left? Just despair? This is just morose and I'm not ready for a steady diet of it.....

From what I hear, Chelsea’s sound is born from dark metal. The chordal arrangements are good but simply aren’t fresh. They aren’t challenging. They aren’t going unexplored places. Eilish is part French film, part Hole, part hip hop, part goth (I guess..) part McCartney, part Leonard Cohen.. in my mind, no comparison..
Billie has another quality that I think gives her the new title of Rock/pop voice of our time, she’s exposing us to the world of the overparented, spoilt brat. But I love that. Her job is not to represent OUR idea of rock rebellion-antiestablishment, stick it to the man, rock, punk, rap stuff. Her job is to tell the story, the angst of THIS generation, not ours. Spoilt, entitled, coddled, confused, lost, depressed .. again, I love it. Rock’s job, as a cultural phenomenon is to represent the young. To tell their story in an attempt to bend the arc,. To be heard.

Other than clicks. When music reviewers say "someone is the next someone", it's hard to not tune them out because I prefer hearing an artist without prejudice. Well mate let's be real here. Nirvana wasn't the most out there and rebellious thing out there in late 80's/early 90's either. Nirvana was a pretty tame and radio friendly version of the underground stuff from 80's that inspired people like Cobain. They were the most out there thing to become a mainstream phenomenon. In the same way, Billie Eillish isn't as out there as someone like Julia Holter, but she certainly channels the a rather raw and bare emotional energy that contrasts sharply with the overblown pop-trap crossovers that ruled the charts over the last 5 years or so. I think it's also rather cynical to call Cobain 'real' and Eillish 'manufactured' when A: Nirvana wouldn't have come close to there current legend status without massive media support and B: ignoring the ludicrous media hate Eillish receives, both from rockist media outlest, as well as tabloids seemingly obsessed with her body. Cobain isn't a saint to whom no-one shall be compared to, and I honestly think he himself would cringe at the idea of being seen as 'better than all the new kids'.

It's not just blasted auto-tune...it's also the rush to "fix" timing, mistakes, HUMANNESS. Take for example VH I, "Ain't Talkin Bout Love"--if you listen closely to Eddie's opening riff, the second time round on the motif he leaves one note out, and in all other repeats adds it back in. Mistake? Artistic license? Who knows other than Eddie (RIP) But chances are high that if that happened in the studio today the powers that be would "correct it."

I can hardly express how gratified I am that Rick finally got around to Billie Eilish, and stunned to see him deliver a 100% indorsement. I am a retired music journalist (age 79), and when I read a review of a concert by August Brown in the Los Angeles Times a few years ago I was shocked by his total rave. I had not listened to '"pop music" for a few years, but after that I had to look her up. I was blown away by how terrific her music is in so many ways, as Rick detailed. Thank you so much for telling it like it is and thereby putting her detractors to shame. (I use the email handle "Jack Frost" for personal reasons. My actual name is Ronald Maxson.)

Nirvana was the obvious one but there were so much more. Rage agains the Machine. But every once in a while he comes across music that he really *connects* with. You can tell that Billie Eilish's music nourishes his soul a little bit after listening to the vulgar, mechanical, assembly line music that rules the charts these days.

Nirvana changed the trajectory of alternative music. This won't happen with Eilish's music, and it won't likely happen in current state of popular culture.
