That's true and such a good point. It's something you really don't find in pop music at all, but the way they use silence is so arresting and captivating.
Yess. It is very stripped back, basically just vocals, piano and sub bass, but it builds up so effortlessly to the bridge. Most ‘emotional’ songs have a strained belting sound to convey sadness/pain(e.g. someone you loved😂) but Billie proves it is just as possible to put emotion into softer vocals. The 3/4 time signature gives a kind of unsettled, almost rushed feel to the chorus. The harmonies are amazing. It blows me away every time. The first time I heard of Billie she opened for a friend of mine in the small room at the Observatory in Southern California. She was only 15 and her and her brother played a super stripped out set and absolutely killed it. Blew my friend’s band out of the water 😅. Ever since that she blew up and I have been in awe ever since

I didn't used to be that way. It took a lot of learning to appreciate things for what they are and not what I think they should be. I used be a stereotypical jazz elitist. Now, having developed a love for so many different genres, I can confidently say, music is so much more enjoyable when you don't care where it comes from or what it's trying to be. When you just find what speaks to you.
@@CharlesCornellStudios This is honestly very inspiring and a hard thing to do. I have been playing guitar for about 8 years now and I'm 16, and only have started learning music theory a year ago. Each time I want to play with someone who has learned music theory more time than me, he takes it as the obvious that I probably know what you're supposed to know after you learned music theory, and that sucks. Besides, they aren't even open to any genre and as I know them they probably won't open to new ones, because as you said they are stereotypical jazz/rock elitists. So I'm betting very much, that none of the people I know who are like I just described can do the same as you did. I think what Billie has vocally is soul. You can't sing the way she does in this song without being completely into it. She puts her voice into a place where she's on the edge of losing it. And that is what is so powerful. And this is live folks.
ahahaahhahah what kinda contrived wax poetic bs is this. Ever since that one old guy said Billie Eilish was some of the best modern music now all the out of touch folk are following suite.

You sound dumb and out of date while trying to desperately be into whats current and new. Because you're old.
I feel like a lot of people tend to overlook the emotions and effort Billie and Finneas does in their music. Their songs are always and will be so raw and personal. Listening to their songs are somewhat intimate. It feels like it’s just you and them. That’s what makes their songs so special.
My personal favorite bond theme song is writings on the wall, but no time to die is a close second, never really liked Skyfall. And love singing no time to die, cause it’s so easy to sing, but writings on the wall is so hard, mainly cause it’s so high, but itks a great way to train your male head voice, although you should always start with the intro to “the lion sleeps tonight”, and then go to something like into the unknown, cause writings on the wall is just a master class in head voice, especially if your tenor isn’t the biggest range to begin with,
I am an unapologetic fan of Billie Eilish. Her music speaks to me in a way that no other pop artist ever has. She and her brother are a breath of fresh air in a long stagnant pop music scene.
This brother/sister combo are a much needed blessing in the music industry. Her lyrics and demand for vocal perfection (as she hears it) combined with his creative ear and writing style are a wonderful combination. Don't trash them unless you listen to them in headphones and then check out some of her television interviews. She's still a teenager yet is wise beyond her years.
@@Circusmaid No, really. I've watched most of her television interviews and when you listen to her you see that she is more mature than her 17 years, and certainly more intelligent than her image would suggest. She is humble, her lyrics are deep, not shallow, and she sees the big picture. Check out her interview with Ellen Degenerese for one example. Remember, she's still a kid. :)
I think that the "relaxed and playful" style you're describing with her harmonies at the forefront feels very choral. Billie loved singing in a choir, as as someone who has been in a lot of choirs, that's what I like the most about her singing. When you have a good group who all knows their parts well, it is relaxed, playful, and deeply satisfying to sing - and just as satisfying to listen to!
Honestly, the chord progression of "my future" reminds me of watching Peanuts movies as a kid. It doesn't sound sad, happy, or bittersweet. It just sounds like life.
Literally I was thinking the exact same thing as he was working out the chord progression. It, ironically enough, sent me mentally back in time to being a kid watching Merry Christmas Charlie Brown. Specifically the “O Christmas Tree” cover that was used during the quiet, contemplative moments. I think the best word to describe the mood that My Future and the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s O Christmas Tree cover is “introspective.” It’s an inherently neutral word, not positive or negative, but it has so much meaning and emotion behind it.
I never thought of this but it makes so much sense! It’s nostalgic, light hearted, and it so genuinely encompasses that feeling of youthful hope and contentment. Like, the gentleness of coming of age, which Charlie Brown gives off so well
The exploratory aspect of recent pop songs is really impressive. The mixing of genres, the different styles that come out of it. We've truly broken past the cookie cutter pop songs
@@Anti-FreedomD.P.R.ofSouthKorea I mean, that’s kind of how music is. In the classic rock era there was a shitton of awful music as well, they just didn’t survive the test of time. @@Trisiton guess the reason most people think old music is absolute gold is because no one remembers or cares about the absolutely horrible songs that came out then too
I personally believe that Billie and Finneas will be remembered as two of the most talented and accomplished artists in history. They are 23 and 19 and have already conquered the world with their music. Imagine what they will have accomplished in 10-15 years.
Ok, this makes total sense It's not billie, it's the billie fangirls that are actually 14 and live like there's something to be depressed about every day for no reason other than social acceptance tolerance of such behaviour. I like billie and finneas's music as a dubstep listener, there's nothing wrong with liking their music :)
just gonna say, there are quite a few videos of billie outside of songs, and she really doesnt behave like "ugh this world is the worst" or anything that can even remotely be connected with wannabe depression, which only further proves that its her fanbase that is like that
And it is rarely, if ever mentioned, the focus on her breathing. If you listen as a singer, to my future and no time to die, you find yourself thinking 'Breathe Billy!' But she pushes through extended phrases and maintains the control and pitch as well as the dynamic. Kudos to you Charles. Thank you for your talent and production work.
Oh I knowww, Billie's breath support is amazing! Her sort of "whisper singing" is traditionally frowned upon because it doesn't maximize all of the air you inhale - the whispery sound is from all the extra air escaping between the vocal folds without being turned into sound. But to be able to sing entire songs that way, with such precision and control demonstrates that her air management is completely stellar, and when she wants to go full voice and belt, she can! As someone with horrible breath control, she's an inspiration 😆
@Pusalieth Or I could just be expressing my enjoyment of music, its workings, and expressing how awesome it is that Charle's is making an entire 16-minute video to express his own love for music.
It's really nice to see someone geek out so hard about Billie's music like this! Your thoughts were really well articulated and, as a classical musician who is currently learning music theory, offers a perspective on the stylistic choices I've appreciated but never had the vocabulary to really enthuse about. Your genuine enthusiasm is super inspiring!
Hey Ben, if you like My Future, you have to watch the raw, stripped down performance (accompanying herself on the piano) in their recent NPR Tiny Desk concert. It's mesmerizing. ruclips.net/video/4sZ2_aGsLKU/видео.html
Before, whenever I thought of Billie Eilish, I just thought of Bad Guy and just rolled my eyes and didn't understand the appeal of her mumbled soft singing. Then by chance I just happened to be suggested Billie's NPR Tiny Desk concert here on RUclips. And that's where I first heard My Future. And I was blown away! The chord progression of that song is EVERYTHING I love in a chord progression! I felt like "someone literally put all my favorite chord progressions into one song!" And so that got me to listening to some of her other stuff. While I can't say I listen to her all the time, I DEFINITELY appreciate her artistry and musicality, as well as Phineas'.
Honestly, I hate when people say that since Bad Guy is Billie's most popular song that it must be her best. That's just so unfair, because she has so many other ones that are extremely unappreciated. I honestly don't even like Bad Guy because it's been way too overplayed lol
I really don't think either of them expected Bad Guy to be their break out hit. It doesn't really represent their standard sound, When The Party's Over is honestly my #1 pick.
Ok so my #1 pick is probably 8, but it's just a personal choice. It's very weird the range of feelings that said song makes me feel, but it's like even more than when the party is over.
I think Billie and phineas’ haters are mainly non musicians that just see them as a pop artist that got popular. I think a majority of musicians agreeably appreciate Billie Eilish’s music, the same was musicians appreciate Jacob collier and snarky puppy and etc.
they see billie eilish (because they see her alone, finneas isn't even recognized by the people) as the im14andthisisdeep singer that just sings quiet and likes to make boring and sad music even my mom didn't like no time to die, but here we see charles bringing that song to a completely higher level than just "oh this is sad and boring". and it's necessary
I'm a classical pianist and Billie Eillish is one of the few pop singers that I put on repeat. I enjoy the composition and her terribly good voice. But some of my colleagues don't see the appeal and think she is just another pop singer. Oh well.

I'm sure there are millions just like me. And there are probably billions of people who have no idea who she even is.
I'm a jazz/classical musician that doesn't have any hate for pop, but it's definitely hard for me to find "pop" that finds its way into my on repeat Playlist, but Billie was the first new artist in years that I listened to and immediately fell in love with. It's unique and amazing while having replay value that a lot of music doesn't. Charlie Puth has found his way there too because of your other videos. Thanks for helping people appreciate these amazing artists!
It's also worth mentioning, the amount of versatility these two have. "Therefore I Am", with the simple but infectious groove, the strings, the harmonic minor scale, and the bravado in the vocals sounds like it could fit snugly in a Britney Spears record. Meanwhile, tracks like "All The Good Girls Go To Hell" and "You Should See Me In A Crown" take influence from different shades of Funk and Industrial Hip Hop. In conjunction with the Jazz and Chamber Pop influences you mentioned, these Siblings know their stuff and I've always loved their music😊
I think you meant vibrato lmfao I truly agree with this comment it really was worth mentioning all the artistic features that billie and finneas always bring in.
I’m so glad you liked No Time To Die, because everyone else I’ve seen has been like “it’s so cheesy!” But it’s such a nod to the Bond Legacy, especially in regard to the music 🥺
It feels like a farewell note to the current Bond era, which is prob why they made the vibe remind you of Skyfall, which was like the peak of Bond music during the said era.
I think the fact that they grew up listening to so many different styles and genres is one of the keys to how they kind of came up with their own. Billie said one of her favorite songs ever is by Frank Sinatra, and was also in Peggy Lee 100 years celebration talking about how she was obsessed with her when she was younger. She was/is a huge Justin Bieber fan. One of her favorite artists is Tyler the Creator, and she really likes rap in general... If you take a look at the playlists from her short podcast "me & dad radio", you'll see what I mean.
I've recently become obsessed with "everything I wanted." The lyrics are so deep and the song is just not afraid to really FEEL. I recommend the beautiful, sad, dreamy music video that goes with it too, definitely the best way to listen to it. I'm a little sad you didn't talk about that song but happy that you went into "my future" because that's my other favorite song of hers at the moment. The song and video gives me some really lovely Steven Universe vibes that made me nostalgic for the show again.
(not so fun) fun fact: e.i.w was written over a year. the depressed suicidal "jumping off of the golden gate" part was written when billie had a nightmare about her dying and nobody caring, and she was going through a hard time. the brotherly love part was written 6 months later when she was in a better place
I’m so glad you make these types of videos. You bring musical credibility to the people who deserve it, the opposite of an elitist bringing other musicians down

I’m so happy he reacted to My future, I knew he would like it! That’s one of my favorite Billie songs and I immediately heard the jazz inspiration with the chords. Really good stuff!
she almost sounds like Coleman Hawkins's saxophone playing when she sings. It's got a ton of sub-tone in lower dynamics and a wide, fast, fast-dying vibrato. and is super silky and smooth in the higher dynamics with the same vibrato.
Definitely agree with this discussion. I never really listen to newer pop anymore due to the lack of melody or meaningful harmony. I always go back to jazz to get that refreshing feeling of something new and we'll thought out not because I feel it's superior but because I understand the musical choices being made are interesting due to the fleshed out nature of it. When I heard "Everything I Wanted" for the first time I was blown away by the mixing choices as well as the uses of the instruments in the song. The melody had meaning and it all felt real as opposed to manufactured with a pop formula. There are definitely songs in the mainstream I enjoy but Billie and Finneas always put out something that's not only catchy but musically mature and I'm here for it.
I'm just sad that people don't understand that, while they judges Billie's music to be for edgy teenagers, it is authentic and true to the emotions of the artists. It's genuine. That's so rare in pop these days and that, to me, is GREAT music. Coupled onto what Charles has already said, the tune carrying those "im14andthisisdeep" lyrics is so beautiful and so much thought goes into it. The sound IS deep, and you don't have to be 14 to see that.
I'm a 35 year old man, and I think her music is great. It's clear she and her brother are a team, and I really appreciate it. I like that she uses things that feel traditional but still challenges the space.
She's got mad Rex Orange County vibes, in her vocals, melody choices, and influences and it's something I highly respect; nobody quite like them can mix styles and textures so incredibly seamlessly.
You nailed it...you can not care for a performer's music, their style BUT you have to appreciate the depth to the music they create - they (Finneas and Billie) are true creatives.

You perfectly articulated how I feel about Billie's sound and the collaborative nature of her relationship with her brother. There is an intimacy between them that is beautiful yet not "wrong." The symbiosis is important but still distinctly different. That allows so much beauty to come out.
Absolutely. I've been quite disappointed, I was expecting a deeper analysis. But it's more like a super reaction video. With too much ads and 90s of sponsoring communication. The only interesting part was the chords analysis which was... Not that deep (and pretty sure Stevie Wonder already played something like that). Well, Billie and Finneas' music is not my taste but I deeply want to understand why their fans like their music. And this video does not help a lot. Quite unfortunate.
I agree with the musical depth that their music contains. So smart. That's why they are so unique and interesting to listen to and they know it and the prefer to keep it that way. It's great! I get her style and I like it but I cannot wait until she belts more because I know it's there and I can hear it in NTTDie and so want more!
I really appreciate the chord progressions in Billie's songs. I might not understand the theory behind it but sometimes a chord will just slightly change, and add motion or beg to be resolved and when it is revolved it might be in an unexpected way. I enjoy how her vocals match the music. Sometimes songs back to back become a bit monotonous but overall I enjoy them when I hear
Just the effort to not just say Billie but Billie AND Phineas just shows that you appreciate them and especially producers. You're not dismissing the important people behind the music. Really bravo. My respect for you has sky rocketed!!
let me add on the drums part is that the secret is: they aren't quantized. the hi hat on the offbeat is juuust a little late and the snare is juust a little early.
When he talked about “my future” sounding sad but not I totally felt that because whenever I listen to it it kind of hurts? But the lyrics are so empowering at the same time
"It is very easy to make it totally just lacking of any depth and feel." I second you. What you said there is 100% true. I was kind of disappointed the first time when I heard this cliched 'This-and-that-and" groove (it's just superficial & poppy), but when she started singing I was like "Man, that is one hell of an earworm!!!". I think they used that groove to keep it simple and easily relatable, and I have pointed it out in my analysis video on 'Therefore I Am'. And the grove goes well with the playful melody!
Same. I'm a fan but when I first heard TIA it just didn't work for me. I didn't really stream it but kept hearing it here and there, and before I even realized what was happening I found myself humming or singing it. Totally looking forward to seeing them play it live whenever touring becomes a thing again. B&F are seriously skilled and inventive.
That's ultimately how I came around to her stuff. Once you get past the weirdness, you realize that she's just the best lyricist in pop music, bar none.
It took me several months to get around to liking Billie Eilish's music and I think it's because her sound is not really my cup of tea. Also, since I'm basically a grandma when it comes to new music, I wasn't really curious to see what else she's done apart from the stuff I eventually heard on the radio. But when I finally did (and especially after seeing interviews with her), I really came around to her. I still don't listen to her music regularly or consider myself a fan, but I definitely appreciate her musically. And I'm absolutely thrilled, she's doing the Bond intro song. I still haven't listened to it (I skipped that part in your video) since I am adamant about wanting to listen to the song for the first time when watching the film. And that doesn't seem likely to happen anytime soon. :I
I cried when I first heard My Future. First of all, it's just down right beautiful, and then I was like wait that chord progression, WHOAAAA she's done it, she's made jazz go mainstream!
Hey Charles, do you like Rina Sawayama? I think she’s another one making very interesting strides in the mainstream space which are also quite unique, and draw pretty unapologetically from a diverse set of genres too. Worth listening to her recently released album ‘Sawayama’.
I actually had not listened to the James Bond song and its soooo good. I can't help loving Zimmer's hand in the layers of the instruments but she gives an amazing interpretation and smoothy voice that fits sooo greatly with the instrumental
Dude I have no idea what you’re talking about, but your appreciation of music is artful. Like, the passion you have is an art in of itself. This is amazing
I think, on the ‘my future’ sentimentality comments, that the chord progression is melancholic most assuredly. But it also smacks of having been there before; a sort of repeated sadness that you’re learning to deal with, and becoming more sage through processing. It’s sad but unquestionably hopeful!
Finneas is a genius composer, and Billie knows how to bring out the emotion in her brother's compositions. That's why it works. (although as a trained Vocalist her singing style STILL DRIVES ME NUTS)
Exactly. It's 🙄 to see people talking about how good her voice is. She has a nice tone, and the overall music sounds good, but her voice is nothing advanced and special.

She's talented, has nice control on what she does, but has very limited tools to work with. Overall she lacks dynamics and her options are very limited. @@estera4176 Than why hasen't anyone else since Billie Holliday been able to do it? I'm talking about how she uses her voice, not her voice itself. The emotional expression, not the technical stuff. @@davidannderson9796 I partially agree about the emotional expression. I don't fully agree, because listeners can be quite subjective in the emotional perception. Just like the original comment said. She brings out emotion so as to be relatable for the listeners, and it works with this era and musical trends. But the singing itself is not something exceptional. Also, there are plenty of singers that didn't make it in the industry, some haven't even tried to, social media is full of them. So we can't be sure that only Billie Holiday and Billie Eilish are the only ones capable of doing this. I don't want to argue either. I'm just thinking that we tend to focus on what's popular and heavily promoted because it's relatable, even if it's not necessarily of the highest quality as many people say.
First time i listened to her albums i went in not expecting much and then ended up playing both albums on a loop at least 3x each. Was totally blown away!!

I really love how he doesn't just appreciate, but enjoys so many different genres of music. ♥️
The way you grew out of yourself is very not obvious and I understand that and appreciate you for that, and that's one of the reasons I love watching your vids and see you laugh and enjoy from songs you review or just talk about them. :DD
@@CharlesCornellStudios I'll listen to anything which can tell me a story, give me frissons, change my mindset, or I just find technically interesting/detailed. Love getting inspiration via everynoise.com spent hours on there browsing different Genres.

I think what Billie has vocally is soul. You can't sing the way she does in this song without being completely into it. She puts her voice into a place where she's on the edge of losing it. And that is what is so powerful. And this is live folks.
She is just singing bro calm doen

No one today or in the last decade does this … no one has THIS voice… totally connect with music and emotional intelligence. Music is ART not bullshits like what the pop marketing products produces only to sell … she represents what music and art are for.
@@Jack2729o People don't take her music seriously because its over produced and shallow.. For a 40 year old you presume too much old man. I can also write and record way better music than most. I doubt you can produce a note worth listening to, I'd like to hear your work. I can guarantee you're not as knowledgeable or good as you think you are.

Love this. Completely agree there's something different and captivating about her music - amazing production
the two words I'd use for the production are precise and intimate (although vocal style has a lot to do with the second too)
I think that the "relaxed and playful" style you're describing with her harmonies at the forefront feels very choral.
MrLegendofLP yes! Introspective.
I never thought of this but it makes so much sense! It’s nostalgic, light hearted, and it so genuinely encompasses that feeling of youthful hope and contentment. Like, the gentleness of coming of age, which Charlie Brown gives off so well

I just discovered her song 'My Future' because of you and damn was I blown away. The melody, indeed. But also the sound design is just SO. GOOD.

I've always loved how much sound design goes into Billie's music, Finneas definitely puts in some work
Hey Charles, do you like Rina Sawayama? I think she’s another one making very interesting strides in the mainstream space which are also quite unique, and draw pretty unapologetically from a diverse set of genres too. Worth listening to her recently released album ‘Sawayama’.
Hard agree. Cherry is a perfect pop song and no one can change my mind.
Billy Eilish's harmony lines are integral to the song.
I actually had not listened to the James Bond song and its soooo good. I can't help loving Zimmer's hand in the layers of the instruments but she gives an amazing interpretation and smoothy voice that fits sooo greatly with the instrumental
Please, explain ALL OF THEIR chord progressions!!! Loved it!
Dude I have no idea what you’re talking about, but your appreciation of music is artful. Like, the passion you have is an art in of itself. This is amazing
the way you play "my future" really reminds me of misty, cause they have a similar progression
@@estera4176 But how many people can Use It as well as she does? The last time we had someone who could sing as beautifully intimately as she does in many of her songs it was Billie Holliday!
@@davidannderson9796 She's nothing special vocally, really. She's not complex at all. If you get to always sing like this, it's only natural that you develop this part of your voice. Mastering both this soft breathy voice and the strong voice and everything in-between is what's truly remarkable. She's talented, has nice control on what she does, but has very limited tools to work with. Overall she lacks dynamics and her options are very limited. Not to mention the importance of a good mic to pick up what she does (I don't follow her, so I'm not sure if she's has no mic random singing videos to see how her voice sounds like naturally and how loud it is).
@@estera4176 Than why hasen't anyone else since Billie Holliday been able to do it? I'm talking about how she uses her voice, not her voice itself. The emotional expression, not the technical stuff.
I don't want to argue, I just want all the other people out there to see accurate information. What critics say matters.
I hear authenticity in Billie’s songs
Bille has such a beautiful voice....
She is a goddess
Absolute BANGER Charles!! Really enjoyed this one!!
First time i listened to her albums i went in not expecting much and then ended up playing both albums on a loop at least 3x each. Was totally blown away!!
I just love how he's playing harmonies with the face like he's brushing his back and ecstasy
you have put into words what I felt about their music. Well done.
I had no interest in Billie’s music until a few months ago when I saw her and Finneas do a Tiny Desk at Home and when she sang “my future” it blew my mind. I’ve been hooked ever since, watching videos on them and listening over and over to their stuff. Unreal. I can’t believe I ignored them for so long.
Kinda same here, Tiny Desk changed my perspective of how Billie is actually so blessed with her talent.
And you know how many people are doing the same - ignoring and dismissing her? Imagine being a supervocalist at such a tender age and being constantly called a "whisperer", "she can't sing", "an industry plant", "undeserved Grammies", etc. As she sings in No Time To Die "Life is far away from fair". Also both she and Finneas are amazing lyricists.
@@helenhunt5414 those people are a minority. A lot of people love her music style . But some tone deaf people think she whispers
@@nikhil-bm6kq I hope you are right that they are in minority, 'cause sometimes when I am reading different comment sections, it seems that they are legions!
@@helenhunt5414 hm you're right. But they have just not listened to her or gave her any time. They just dismiss her off without listening to her songs.
