Aside from the stuff regarding Sylvan Learning, I was actually familiar with all the trivia here but it was great to listen to it all within one singular video on the subject. It was also nice to get a perspective from someone who was working in game retail at the time of the CD32. Fantastic job with this video!

Quebec, Canada here, I had one and I loved it. I may be the only one here to have that console. My favorite game was Liberation because of the atmosphere, open world and 3D textured graphics.

Love seeing things like Banshee and Alien Breed 3D. CD32 was a bit of a mess, but still had some great conversion.

The funny thing is: the Amiga *started* as a video game console project. However, after the 1983 video game crash the company "pivoted" to build a computer with amazing graphics and sounds instead.
But even if Commodore hadn't gone bankrupt, it's unclear whether the CD32 could have competed against the upcoming PlayStation. The Amiga custom chipset (even the revised AGA version) was getting long in the tooth at this point. The CPU may have been 32-bit, but the graphic chip was still 16-bit and designed for 2D games.

I was an Amiga owner (A500 then A1200) , I decided against the CD32 as it just didn't offer anything new. Cool to hear some of the stories behind it though, more interesting than I thought.

I was never lucky enough to see one of these here in the States as a kid. Even though it failed, I think it would be cool to actually play one today. Great vid.

A slightly interesting idea for a sequel video: how does _the software library_ for the Amiga CD32 stack up when compared to the FM Towns Marty, and/or the Sega CD? I would bet that the Marty has more titles that are still truly playable today than the CD32… maybe the Sega CD would be in third place, with only a few (exclusive) titles worth mentioning… but perhaps I'm wrong.

Commodore's money and time would have been better spent just selling a CD-ROM drive for the A1200 and an aggressive push for AGA software to be CD only to justify it. Would have been preferable for me, those games were getting too big for floppies at that point. Hell, they could have ultimately not lost as much money if those CD-ROM drives were included in the box of every 1200 at no extra cost, then at least there'd be no excuse of users not owning one to maximize AGA CD sales. Then, with the games themselves, you're giving developers the option to produce their own Redbook CD audio for all the music which would free up the Paula chip for 4 uninterrupted channels of sound effects for a bigger and broader sounding experience.
Not that any of this would have cured all their woes but it might have staved off bankruptcy a little longer. I could also be hugely off base if there's any important details I'm overlooking, it has been close to 30 years...

I personally think that the CD32 should have been launched alongside the A1200 in 1992 with the CD1200 add-on made available at the same time too. That definitely would have encouraged people to make CD games and given Commodore a massive jump on their rivals.

Yeah, I really wanted that CD drive for my A1200

I would've liked to have gotten one of these :) But, I also would've liked to have gotten my hands on an A1200 too. :P I think the CD32 intro sound beats the pants off Sega's CD :)

The cd32 never got the love it deserved. Its more loved today. Its a cool console, the joypad not so much. The quality of the joypad was awful.
Its the best way to play Amiga games, either by real hardware or emulation.
Im waiting for an official mini cd32.

I never knew anyone who had one of these, always seemed pointless when you could buy an Amiga computer.

My biggest question is: Where are the collections and "mini" consoles for these systems? I've already played, and in most cases own, every major platform game up to Dreamcast, so I have no reason to buy those. I want collections for systems most people have little to no experience with. Where's the Marty collection? Where's the CD-i collection? Where's the PICO collection? I would buy these.
I'm American, so I would also buy an Amiga, Wonderswan, and ZX Spectrum collection.

I totally agree, we need more minis based on the more obscure consoles that people never got to play. I know that Videopac and CD-i minis have at least been considered by one company who does these kind of units, but they've never pulled the trigger. Atari need to make a XEGS and Jaguar mini.

There is an Amiga mini on the way. As for the others, the market is possibly too small to warrant getting the licences. And in the Spectrum's case the games are freely available in so many places on the net. But it also wasn't a huge seller outside of the UK and a bit in Europe. Although arguably the people who started programming on it have made a huge contribution to the future of gaming worldwide.

So disappointing. I bought one at launch. But I had buyers remorse very soon after. I should of gone the A1200 route.

The section title cards don't really work. They're too long and some of the sections are shorter than the cards. And I wish we had a shot at that CD32, gorgeous 2dx graphics on that thing

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  2 года назад +1

None of the sections are shorter than the cards! The title cards are exactly 10 seconds long, because the CD32 intro sound is 10 seconds long. Ideally I like the title cards to be 5 seconds long, but cutting the intro sound in half sounded rubbish. Without checking, I think the shortest section is just over a minute long.
      Thanks for your feedback anyway.
