  • A bomb cyclone pushes through the Kansas area today creating winds sustained at 60MPH and gusts over 80 MPH in the Texas Panhandle! Trucks being blown over, power lines and trees coming down, and multiple structures having roofs blown off. This was by far the most intense non storm wind event I have ever been in!

The first sign of when it starts getting windy in Texas is when you are driving down the highway at 70 mph and a tumbleweed passes you.

And week after this we get speratic tornadoes formations welcome to the panhandle of Texas. One hell of a way to bring in spring 2019. This wind storm was rearranging street signal lights and trees as well.

I grew up in Amarillo and saw a number of days like this one. I went to school in an old school house on Bell street when that was the very western edge of town. The windows were the old fashion wooden windows with copper strips along the side to seal the window when it is shut. There were many times in spring and late spring that the wind be blowing so hard that those strips would start to vibrate and hum loudly. Sometimes so loud you could not hear the teacher at all. So for the rest of the day we would just have to sit at our desks and read or watch the tumbleweeds go by.
My mom worked at Bell Helicopter and she had a few days they made everyone stay in the buildings, even after their shift was over. Because of the danger that a blowing sheet of metal would easily decapitate someone or even cut them in half. Some days they had to wait it out to 6:30-7PM before the wind died down enough so that everyone could finally leave.
Someone here said that this was their worse weather day they seen in Amarillo. Here is mine. In March, '73 a cold front came in with wind about 50-60mph that also brought along lot of dust with it. We all seen that in Amarillo. But then it began to snow hard too. So now we had this very brown snow blowing horizontal all afternoon. The snow was a wet snow so it had some weight to it and would really sting when it hit your face. I knew that was the worse I had seen there. . . . . . However, like many March snow storms in the panhandle the sky was clear the next day. While the snow on the ground looked more like sand on a beach. Everything that was smooth has brown streaks on them that make it look like it was made of marble. Overpasses looked like they were supported on beautiful marble columns. Tanks looked like they were made of marble. If a white car was parked facing the right way it looked like it was made of marble. It was so strange that such a miserable show/dust storm could leave such beauty for the next day.
I now live in the Dallas area and have for some time now. When the weather person here starts to talk of how tomorrow it will be a very windy day and some places may see wind up to 25mph. I just laugh and say, "Amateurs, in Amarillo we do not even bother to talk about the wind when it is just 25mph." Still even seeing this video, I really miss living there.

We had the same winds in Lubbock 120 miles south. I was visiting my son in Amarillo that day and the wind blew his neighbors roof off and I wound up cleaning the pink insulation out of his yard and trees as much as I could. It even blew a train with 18 cars off of its track just a few miles from his house. Tons of fences were shredded and driving back to Lubbock we saw one
of the huge green and white signs that tells you the name of the upcoming towns twisted around and folded over backwards!

I know in 30 years that building has seen some storms and wind and it hasn't budged an inch. For it to completely be lifted and carried several yards is absolutely insane.

That toot n totem is right around the corner from my house! I took a lot of damage from this windstorm. Roof on one of my outbuildings blew off and slammed into my house and totaled my 2012 mustang and busted out the back glass in my 92 olds bravada and crushed the rear hatch in my 2000 vw beetle. 9 days later a hailstorm came through and broke all of the windshields in my bravada and my vw and the brand new Nissan frontier pickup rental I had. At the same time, down in abilene Texas, the very first tornado ever recorded within the abilene city limits tore through my sisters neighborhood destroying her car. Her daughters car and her husband's work truck and demolished her house too!!! She was trapped inside for a short time but by the grace of God she was not injured. I bought her tornado damaged 2007 mustang gt this year almost exactly one year from the tornado and i replaced the roof that had been crushed and replaced all of the windows and windshield and back glass that had been broken and replaced both outside mirrors that had been ripped off and replaced both headlights and both foglights and the grill and the pony emblem on the grill. The car only had 50,000 miles on it! Its still scratched to hell and gone from the pea gravel off of the roof from across the street, but i am driving this car now here in amarillo! It runs great and was barely broken in when the tornado hit it. It was absolutely worth it!

I lived through this crazy wind storm. Had multiple massive mature trees uprooted in my neighborhood and neighbors had their fences completely removed, like completely eviscerated. My patio set cushions literally were ripped off the furniture and I never found them, they just blew away (normally remove them but the wind came on while I was already at work, they were tied down though). I have never experienced wind gusts this strong outside of a tornado in my life, it was epic. Many homes in the surrounding communities were completely flattened by this “haboob”. Read stories of people returning home from work to basically empty slabs where their home used to sit. Welcome to West Texas.

It blew our trees over and even some bushes, which was weird. I'm still picking up garbage off the street and in my yard! That was a doozie!

SheepEatingDuck when you see a truck almost wreck in front of you it’s pretty a good idea to see if you can slow traffic down.. which is what I did. It worked for most trucks but some of them didn’t seem to care if there was several semi trucks in the ditch. That’s on them.
