@Waylen Edge do not bring an invisible belief into this conversation. The belief in "God (s)" has killed more of humanity and destroyed more of the world than any other thing on this planet. What happened here is nothing more than the natural laws of nature compounded by the meddling of mankind. Live your life and stop putting a false, unproven twist on reality.

Apparently, the impoundment was fully sedimented ... it was decided to leave the dam in place to keep all the toxic chemicals trapped above the dam ... I guess they forgot to do basic maintenance and now the dam's washed away ... pictures from before the flooding show a dam is serious decay, I'd say it was overdue for breaching ...

In 2016, 58.74% of Nebraska's voters elected a President who does not believe in climate change, and who considered reducing taxes on the wealthy to be a higher priority than investing in infrastructure.
I feel for the people effected by this disaster. I really do. Especially since this disaster was so utterly and completely preventable.
But, at some point, we must all admit that at least some some portion of the blame for this predicament rests squarely on those who are suffering the most from it.

The soil was never expected to saturate which would lead to failure? Let me guess, they new better than all the others that failed before them. Now everyone will suffer from this enormous blunder.

Wow. Poorly designed. There was no spillway on the left side of the dam. So if they couldn’t release the water fast enough it would spill over the soil, washing it away. They didn’t maintain that dam either, and I suspect couldn’t open all the gates. Thick ice made for a dangerous combo. Thank god it wasn’t a large dam.

Dams cause more harm than good. We really shouldn't build dams at all. We should focus on water conservation and not water retention. And I'm not talking about using 2 liters a year in order to conserve water. But I'm talking about planting habitat that is conducive to harvesting water and keeping water from running off. Just as the hunter creates habitat to keep the game coming back year after year, we must also produce habitat that keeps the water from running off.

I agree. Stop making ethanol. 27+ gallons of water to make 1 gallon of ethanol is insane.

I am very sorry for those affected by this dam failure. That said its time we start spending large sums of cash on capital improvements. We have been in borrowed time for decades. Each administration keeps kicking the can because repairing dams, roads and bridges is not in their political interest.

The only way is to vote out those who are only interested in giving dollars away to those who aren't interested in providing for themselves or their families. Cut the welfare state give aways. Spend the dollars on infrastructure and support the wealth creators such as small business etc.

@@philbox4566 Google how much the US spends on its military, its insane then Google how much Afghanistan and the Iraqi war cost us. Social services are a drop in the bucket compared to running military bases spread out all over the world.

Looks like the dam couldn’t handle the ice flow. The river reclaimed the channel. “NPPD officials said they felt the dam was safe and the collapse was due to an “unprecedented” combination of high flows from the Niobrara River mixed with massive chunks of ice”
