- Why is nobody talking about this iphone 15 pro max camera quality issues? Its a line that appears when capturing RAW images on the 5x camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It appears when shooting RAW images then editing in Adobe Lightroom
What is the solution?

I caught this issue on launch day. Drove me nuts. I went to the genius bar, the agreed it was an odd problem, swapped it out. Same issue.
Glad this is finally getting a spotlight put on it. I'm convinced its either the sensor or the prism reflecting on the sensor. Either way, ProRaw hides it well, which tells me apple knew the problem was there.
I suspect its more how the RAW is interpreted by some editing apps
The 15 pro max camera is riddled with issues. If you look at the Apple forums everyone is upset about the ridiculous cost for a camera that works worse than even an iPhone 8. Raw files are worse than Jpeg Max on mine. Focus and color is terrible. Many of us have reported the issues to Apple (it’s what everyone should do to help get a fix) but 5 months later, still nothing. An Apple Store supervisor told me, in a condescending way like I should know this, that this is the first camera Apple made that’s so reliant on software and they haven’t figured out how to make it work. Flipping disappointing.
I bought a 15 pro max 😢by a personal loan only for video purpose what can i do 🥺@apple
@@natazghostz3132 make sure to call Apple support and report all issues you’re having. It seems like everyone knows the phone is riddled with camera issues so I’m not clear why I’m 5+ months they haven’t fixed the issues yet.
great vid Shayne... My wife has the 15pro max and i still rock the 13 pro.. but when im filming her with the 15pm there are so many times the quality is just grainy and out of focus, i never have this problem with my 13 pro. So its a big focus problem... and I really wish that when you tap top focus on video, they can have a little x to go back to overall focus. Super irritating
Im hearing you mate. Its so good in some cases, not so much in others.
Hi guys! Thanks for taking about this issue! I have 15 pro and have this problem in all lenses and across different apps. Hopefully those gigantic corpos are gonna fix this! Cheers!
Also is there a solution to all photo editing apps automatically change the photo immediately after it’s being uploaded to the app? For example: I shoot a beautiful photo of the moon and as soon as I open the editing app and import this photo after a split second some automatic changes are applied and the photo is overexposed to the point there is no way to edit the photo. Thanks!
Also my 14 pro max uses ProRAW with no issues. So is this the 5x zoom 15 pro max issue? Wouldn’t the ProRAW be the same from 14 to 15? I also use Ever Long and other apps.
Its an issue that is seen in RAW, not ProRAW and only on the 5x camera
Just done a bit of testing on both iPhone and iPad and found:
LR - yes
Snapseed - yes
Darkroom - no line
Affinity photo 2 - no line
Raw Power - no line
Mind you - this was just with a couple of 5 sec photos out of Even Longer.
Is this issue present in other phones such as the s24/s23 ultras.Maybe its a flaw of the periscope arrangement/
Dont think so
I can confirm having shot a bunch of regular raw photo's, my 5 x zoon doesn't have the line. I edited a bunch of tests in Capture One and none of them had it
Thanks for researching this and bring this up to apple.
I had contacts with their team regarding slowmotion issues which they adressed. So hopefully it is fixable via software.
Brought your video up to apple support too.
Cheers mate
Not an issue for me on my 15 Pro Max when shooting RAW (Moment) and using On1 Photo Raw (de-haze) or Affinty Photo 2. I refuse to pay Adobe extortion subscription fees hence using other (very) capable Raw image editing apps. I'm not convinced this is an Apple hardware issue at this stage. Just a thought on some more testing. Are you able to pick out if the banding happens on all colour channels? What does it look like if you add / remove noise to the image? BTW: Love your channel, cheers mate!
Cheers mate. After all of the comments here, I suspect its more about how the RAW file is interpreted by the 3rd party editing apps. Not all.
@@ShayneMostyn Hi Shayne. I've downloaded Lightroom (I feel so dirty) just to see what I can 'see'. I can confirm my images also have the same line when viewed in Lightroom, emphasized when using the dehazing slider. However, now things get interesting. On Windows, when I view the unedited DNG file (straight out of the camera) with the native Windows Photo app, there is no line. However when I open it in Lightroom (the line is there), then export from Lightroom to the same DNG format, then upon opening the exported image in the Windows Photo app, it now appears. However...opening the same (edited) image in Affinty Photo or On1 Photo Raw, the line is not there. The plot thickens, I'll dig a bit deeper...
So far so good! I do my Raw editing on Adobe Lightroom Classic, finding phone screen too small for any serious editing. Yes I do have Lightroom on my iPhone 15 ProMax but offloaded it. I mostly use 15 Pro max with Even Longer App with frame average or single frame Raw files. I find that new AI Denoise feature in Adobe Lightroom Classic works really well with Even Longer Raw files. So far no issues with 5 telephoto lens, all great!!
What's worse is when you try to take a raw photo at 5x with the flash on, you get crazy shutter sync issues as well! I've had a ticket open with adobe since last fall and they have basically said they're waiting on apple to follow up and clarify whether this is software or hardware related. To me it seems like the white band is hardware related and due to the limitations of a very small periscopic lens which they just clean up computationally for the proraw and jpeg outputs
Wow! I didnt know that one!
Nice analysis! My main question is about the connection between Lightroom and Snapseed. From school I remember that most of the time when students answer a question in the same wrong way, they were sitting next to each other;-)
Its interesting isnt it. Your comment made me laugh.
When ever i try to click a photo with my 15promax the image is quite clear with good amount of colors but as soon as i press the click button the image gets clicked and the image clicked does not have the same color. The colors get dull. Can anyone suggest me anything ?
Just tried on my 15PM 256GB US model. Shot 5X Zoom Proraw Max at 48MP. Opened in LR Mobile and moved the Dehaze slider all the way to the right. No issues. Am I missing something?
Have to be missing something mate. Try a 3rd party app that shoots RAW, not ProRAW
Yep I've got the same issue with my 15 Pro Max. I see it in Lightroom but not with other apps.
So should 3rd party camera apps look at moving from RAW to ProRAW?
No, definitely not.
Is it only me or everyone having this issue? So with my iPhone 15 promax whenever i try to take picture on 5x telephoto lens , it sometime lower the quality and take pictures like digital croped picture and after trying it focus change and shows the better quality. I dont know why when i use 5x zoom it flickers between optical to digital and i don’t use slide zoom i just directly tap 2x or 5x directly. plz reply if my iphone is broken or something
Thanks for showing this issue, others issue is we can’t shot cinematic at 3x (15 pro) an 5x (15 Pro Max). But I can shot cinematic at 3x with 14 Pro. By the way, it’s using 3X optical lens, not main lens (1X) to digitaly zoom 3x
Didnt know that mate!
Work around for i15pm users?
Remember the better sky mask preset for Lightroom? Do the same thing. Create a preset using two opposing linear masks centred on the location of the band, with dehaze set at an appropriate negative amount. Then it'll always be available for those 5x RAW images in the future.
Make 2: 1 portrait and 1 landscape.
Possibly mate. I havent been able to remove it convincingly in an edit yet.
I use darkroom and always 16:9 so never noticed it. Will shoot at other aspects and see if it appear in Snapseed. Thanks for pointing this out.
Cheers mate
Why can't adobe use the pro raw output from the 5X camera instead of the raw output?
They are two different things
Does this Anatoly occur when editing the ProRaw file in Apple Photos?
That was “anomaly”
No, it doesn’t show up in ProRAW files.
Nope
After using the 13pro and comparing it to the 15pro I can say that the 13pro has a more refined feel when using. Yes this is my opinion and it’s totally subjective😅 but I feel like the 15pro was made last minute and that’s why it has some minor “problems” while the 13pro looks like it was made on time. Yeah hopefully I could translate my thoughts. English isn’t my first language.
I understand mate. Thanks for watching
Yep, mine has this issue as well. Writing from Brazil btw.
Thanks mate
I've shot many, many hundreds of HEIF MAX resolution pictures with my iPhone 15 Pro Max 5x Camera and well over 10,000 shots overall with this iPhone model. I do not have a single example of banding. I rarely shoot RAW because I prefer the HEIF MAX files) and even when I do I haven't seen this problem. So it must only occur when using other apps in conjunction with Pro RAW (but not HEIF MAX) - whilst using the 5x Zoom lens.
Only occurs with RAW. So a 3rd party app is required. But all 3rd party apps that shoot RAW do it.
Almost looks like a lens refraction issue or a sensor issue if it’s always in the same place. That speaks to a physical issue.
But why is it not present with proraw or HEIF? If it was a result of physics it would be present with all despite multiple image manipulation. Curious!
@@WillNewcombcould be because those are multiple shots processed together and the RAW shot is just a single exposure of all the data the sensor receives.
I would have thought that too. The problem I suspect is LR interpretation of a RAW file. One file can have the issue in LR and the same file not have it in some other editors.
@@ShayneMostynconundrum for sure.
Darkroom and Photomator use apples raw engine as I understand it and Adobe has their own. I wonder if its something in the way Adobes engine is handling it
I suspect it is.
Yes I also have the problem on mine, from Buxton UK
Thanks mate
It seems like these kinds of issues starting to pop up for quite a few years now, and it seem to be more associated with "computational" processes mistakes, when camera software make mistakes with multiple exposures, long exposures, HDR stacking and such, and now these computational proccesses are being baked into RAW images too. So not surprised. Also, when talking about issues that are still there ever since release, Google still not fixed issue with Pixel 8 line, where main camera auto exposure with tapping highlights does not work at all, at exactly 1X, but when going like 0.9X or 1.1X and tapping on bright or shadow areas it works just fine. More and more developers seem to miss these things, crazy part that it is still not fixed for so long.
Thats interesting, Im going to check that out. Thanks mate
This example is the exact opposite of baking in the computational stuff into the RAW (the real Bayer RAW). Lightroom and Snapped are misinterpreting the RAW data here. If you take have a closer look on the vignetting of the 5x based on the real RAW data, you may be surprised what you see. But wait, do you use an iPhone 15 Pro max or a Pixel?
@@mariotomiak I have been talking in general, not specifically to this 5X iPhone issue.
@@ShayneMostyn Seen this Google exposure issue talked on Reddit, also reported on 9to5google and Android Authority. Still not fixed.
Its the problem with lense shadding same with exynos models ring visible
Still not sure its the phone causing it
I've had this problem eversince I've been using my 15 pro max. And actually I thought it is a reflection of the apple case reflecting back on the sensor. However it is still there even without the case. It really is a disaster...
Its a pain for sure
additional issue is that iPhone decide alone when to use optical lens while using 5x zoom, depending on conditions. So frustrating...I mean why we can not decide that at night we would like to shoot with optical zoom rather than cropping from main sensor...
Because Apple decides for you. Even how you arrange your icons..
The only way to do that would be a 3rd party camera app that lets you change the camera
Hi Shayne, my thinking is the prism used to extend focal length is causing the problem. I am just guessing, but suspect that because the line is edge to edge and straight that the ProRAW is seeing the edge of the prism directly or by internal reflection and processing it into the jpeg portion?
Please make vedio of samsung exynos lense shadding problems
Oh I thought you meant it was the iphone. Ill have a look at the S23U
I was thinking “vedio” was a new social media video app. . .
I regret updating to the iPhone 15pro max. I wish I knew this issue well in advance. Now I’m stuck in this contract for next 3 years.
Its fixed now mate. Latest update fixed it
Not fixed
@@muhammedriyas4079 it certainly is fixed mate.

I have it in a few of my photos
Thanks mate
Yep, and the same RUclipsrs who complain about Android phones don't bring any of these things up so they can ride on Tim more.
I think all phones have issues. There is no perfect phone in my opinion. It is unusual to see something so obvious on iphones though
@ShayneMostyn True, but a lot of "RUclipsrs" won't bring up the iPhone's blatant problems.
god damn those flies really LOVES you LOL
haha I hardly notice them really
Any update on this?
Its fixed mate. Latest update
@@ShayneMostyn Great! Thank you.
While I have the iphone 15 pro max I don't do any editing off the phone so not an issue I have come across but understand how this is an issue for professionals
Cheers mate, thanks for watching :)
I also have this issue, in RAW only. Writing from Romania
Thanks mate
Dammit i have the 15 pro max and i never noticed this ... hey buddy what's wrong with those australian bush flies ^^
HAHA I get flies in loads of my videos. I dont even notice them anymore :)
I hope Apple sorts it out for the iphone16pm. I'm due for a 4 year upgrade.
Im sure it will be sorted for the 16 mate
So its not the apps, not lightroom or Adobe(since snapseed does the same), that leaves out just apple. So, may be this was a known issue that apple had and the "ProRaw" preprocessing just hides this flaw whereas the normal raw processing reveals it.
Looks like there is a solution to this. Stay tuned.
👍🏻
I'm not an Apple user but had to comment as this sounds so similar to Samsung's block of full use of camera specifications by third party photography Apps, forcing you to use their native camera App to access full usability of camera PRO specifications.
It certainly does.
Same with expert raw computational photo not the real raw only jpeg
I Tested and I have the same issue! I didn't realize until see this video. I never use long exposition in 5 times until now (just to see if it happens to me).
Happens without LE. Even a fast shutter on Reeflex RAW does it.
I don't have the issue , middle east version
Devil's advocate here: Apple isn't gonna consider this their problem, 5x works in their app, in their raw, so they're gonna let the other app developers try to fix it on their own.
Interesting, I just used ProCamera app 5X Raw (Not ProRaw) took a shot white wall exposed to 50% gray . No issues
Are you editing the pic in lightroom?
@@ShayneMostyn yes , I didn’t try on my Desktop, but I’ve used on iPad with Dehaze slider
just tried in LR Classic as well, all good@@ShayneMostyn
when i see myself of any other frame in view finder it looks great as i want it but after capturing it looks odd and overprocessed
also make the image darker
That's a good spot, Shayne!
The problem is - not many people uses ProRAW, let alone RAWs using a 3rd party app. 🤷♂
This issue would be found much quicker if this was an Android phone, as its users are tinkering much more with the phone/apps themselves.
I'm really curious if you'll be able to get into the bottom of this one.
In the meantime... the x5 lens from Pixel 8 Pro remains undefeated. 🤷♂🙂
P.S. Apple won't lift a singe finger about this. All they care is the ProRAW.
The Pixel 8 Pro shoots its RAW files in a similar manner to Apple’s ProRAW in that it stacks multiple frames creating a “computational RAW” image. Ever notice that it takes a few seconds to render the file? And apparently it will tell you to “hold still” if you’re moving the phone too much. It doesn’t shoot in Bayer RAW (one single frame). The iPhone does, and has been for years. This is why the Pixel 8 Pro will not have an issue like this. Also, the iPhone 15 Pro Max uses a Tetra-prism zoom in the 5x camera and that may very well be a contributing factor, but this is still unknown, especially since the anomaly only appears in Lightroom and Snapseed.
Disclaimer: I don’t have a Pixel 8 Pro but have read about them and those were some of the things I’ve read about.
@@GregMcMillan of course, all the "big dogs" are using computational RAWs these days.
Yet, the quality of Pixel's RAW is really good, very natural and organic.
@@amusetech the difference is that the iPhone has the ability to give you a straight RAW file as well as a computational RAW, the Pixel can’t.
@@GregMcMillan I'd say it's the same. iPhone is able to give you the RAW using a 3rd party app, just the same as the Pixel.
@@amusetech ah, never read that anywhere. Thanks for clarifying.
Hi... I don’t have the problem.. I do not know why😅
I promise, you do have this issue. Shoot a RAW, not ProRAW and edit it in LR.
Thanks for bringing the iPhone 15 pro camera issues to light, there are hundreds of complaints online on reddit and Apple forums about various camera issues with the 15 pro, yet all the reviews ignore it. You are basically the only one talking about it. I have the 15 pro and the camera has been such a dud, it’s faulty by design and Apple doesn’t admit it. The picture and video quality is trash
What else is wrong with it? Im not 100% sure this is actually an Apple issue or Adobe.
Quality control has gone off the rails for everything since Covid. I will say, I wish Apple would get off their high house and stop relying on computational algorithms and start putting in better and bigger hardware. Steve jobs may have been a questionable person with his personal life and how he treated people, but man did he make sure Apple made quality products. IPhone in my opinion has no soul anymore.
What are you using now mate? I recall you have gone apple and android over time.
@@ShayneMostyn on the Iphone 14 ProMax. As a phone, i love the OS, but the phone is not nearly as exciting as the Galaxies. I also feel like I took better photos with my old S21 Ultra, but the editing apps seem better with Apple. Also social media works better on Apple.
Amateur hour. Iphone optics are crap.
again clickbait title...
What are you on about? Did you even watch it?
@@ShayneMostynyes and obviously issue is not with camera quality... issue is with raw processing of 3rd party apps. and if it is happening only for 5x lens it might be processing apps used to grade the dng files. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again. Phone cameras will never be as good as a professional photography camera. It doesn’t matter which phone or brand.
They're already there though. When it comes to "professional photography", the equipment doesn't matter, it's your way of using your equipment.
