Where the seats actually designed with this purpose in mind or is it something you guys stumbled across and noticed it worked with a little elbow grease?

Fit was debuted with this feature and it later made it's way in the HRV.
In Asia, Honda advertises it as "Magic seats" and they can do various different seat combinations, you can even see these modes on Honda fit's Wikipedia page.

My does not do that I tried that several times before and it does not do that the front seat in the backseat don't match it always overlaps one
