If I go solo camping in my hatchback, I don't need to convert the interior into a bedroom. I can sleep peacefully the whole night by just reclining the front passenger seat. 😄
I lived in my car 20 years ago, worked 6am-3pm food processing plant, then went to gym to shower ...hung out with friends in evening...then found parking lot to sleep every night for 6 months...sometimes the only food I had was raisins and unsalted peanuts. It worked.
I used this video as a guide to be able to travel across Europe and do some regular/stealth camping with my girlfriend on my 2019 Peugeot 208. I cut some MDF board to fit the exact dimensions of the boot of my car and be able to fold it back up quickly in case we needed to leave in a hurry, on top of using a cheap inflatable mattress with a foot pump and I still had leftover space for a butane gas cooker and a carry-on case for clothing. We traveled several weeks through many places across Spain and France, up and down the coast of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, visiting friends and Family with nothing but my car and what we could pack in it and we did not spend a single cent on accommodation. When we couldn't spend the night at some of our friend's or families' place we just parked in a secluded spot where we wouldn't be disturbed and the experience was not bad at all. We also went to some camping grounds with our friends and while they set up their tents we just secured some tarp to the open boot of the car as to shield us from rain or wind and camped comfortably throughout the weekend. Of course, it's no substitute for a Hotel or a camper-van but it will do if all you have is a subcompact car and a bit of ingenuity. My advise for people wanting to travel like this is to SAVE MONEY IN ADVANCE. You never know when need might arise that you need money for the hospital, food, clothing, supplies, etc. Life brings unexpected things around and you need to be prepared. We're not rich and had to put aside money for a year just to do this, so keep that in mind. In any case, this amazing video showed me the possibilities of being creative with space and to use what was available to me so that no matter what I could always do things if I put a little thought into it and some elbow grease. Greetings from Spain and cheers for this incredible video ;)
My biggest question with these vanlife/nomad road life styles is what do people genuinely do when they get violently sick? I'm talking both ends. I genuinely want to try this out myself, maybe no longer than a month or two, but what happens when you get caught out and can't just roll up in bed and run to the toilet every two seconds?
Safety?? Really? No one is concerned??? Is everyone really that equipped to handle any situation when parked in a secluded place??? Water??? Car battery dies or breaks down. Adventure, yeah why not for a day or two. For months? I am not confident 🎉😢
This is the best hatchback conversion I have seen so far....and I've seen alot! It's simple and easy to setup and breakdown without all the unnecessary attachments etc. Love it! I am getting a prius C/toyota aqua and looking forward to trying this setup.
Like your set up. I initially started car camping in a Cheverlot Spark by accident as tent got flooded out. From then never looked back when camping on my own, my main solo choice is a car camp. Simple sets are the best. Now I have a bigger car, trying to find a Simple set up that works.
Did this with my old Plymouth Zephyr back in the day. Station wagon so a LOT more stretch out space, worked well for two. No specialized gear required, just storage tubs and an air mattress. Weather-proof camping.
I am currently purchasing everything I need to sleep in my 2020 RAV4 these newer models are a lot larger compared to the older one. I’m very convinced that I can sleep in it even though I’m about 6 foot one.
Best subcompact suv for car camping is the honda hrv (except 2023 model) with magic seats. I have 2016 honda hrv lx fwd. The seats fold almost completely flat. I use 3" foam to make the bed completely flat and comfortable to sleep on. For storage, I've added a Thule cargo carrier on the roof of the hrv with Thule roof rack. My wife and I have been car camping for over 10 years and it has saved us a significant amount of money. I really like your video and how practical your setup is. Keep up the good work.
hi! I am working night shift an hour way from home and love your easy set up! perfect for taking a nap after my night shift and perfect for solo travel! I just wanted to ask where(what store) or how did u find ur wood to set up as your bed frame @@farawayporch
@@farawayporch Great Video. Have been doing this for years. Never understood why campers have to carry their kitchen sink and a double bed behind !!! Any modifications yet ? I have a very similar set up except I've made a totally flat bed by making an inside shelf for the wood in the back to lay on. Its only an inch or so higher and then I have a second sheet of wood (same size) that slides out towards the front. I find it's necessary to sleep totally flat for me, but if you can get away with your mattress thats even better. Ford Fiasta ?
Nice! I have an even smaller camper lol;) Mine is 12 Year old Fiat Panda 1.1. Unlike you I have removed the back seats (with the permission of my insurance company) fitted OSB board with brackets where the seat was mounted to hold it. And a lift out panel covering the boot area. All the underside is covered with foil insulation. I made a folding "head board" so when I moved the front passenger seat forward and tilt it I have a flat bed with an adjustable headrest. Tools etc go under passenger front seat, gas stove under driving seat. My electrics (USB for charging and LED lights CCTV cameras etc) is a large standard 12v van battery sitting in passenger foot area connected to my auxiliary power sockets,so no need to use the cars battery. I have window black out film on the rear plus bubble foil barrier I made for all windows.. really helps with condensation! Wind deflectors rear so I can get venting etc in the wet. Folding toilet that doubles as a table for the evening.. I could go on.. fitted carpets.. nice rug.. inflatable mats and an amazing sleep bag.:) Been nice and warm even with ice snow outside..
Sounds so cool. It seems like you have a permanent micro camper setup for now. I tried to rotate the front seat and face it backward. So, I could use it as a dining seat (like swivel seat). Unfortunately the screws are not in square pattern. So had to fix it back to original state. So far, I enjoy seating outside to eat or drink. That's the whole point of being outdoor. Even when laying down and watching movies inside the car, I still keep the boot door fully open. The only time I close is the night time.
I did this with nothing but a sleeping bag one night. Had 2 16-hr shifts in a row, didn't want to drive home and back between them, so I pulled into the nearby woods and slept in my hatchback.
I was in a similar situation, I pulled into a layby and spent the night in my old Nissan Almera Tino. Luckily I keep my bug out bag in my car, so making coffee and breakfast was no problem.
Anything is better than sleeping in a tent! I occasionally go camping in my 2005 Pontiac Vibe. The great thing about it is that when the rear seats are folded down, the back of the seats and cargo area are perfectly level. I think this feature should be required by law for all hatchbacks! Sadly, my Vibe is getting worn out. And it seems to be impossible to find another one that does not have a huge number of miles on it. Awesome vehicle!
Hmm, no. I can stand in my tent, sleep in a cot, have my 2 dogs (35 and 70 lbs) I can walk and move freely in it specially if is raining, sit down to read in my camping chair and even make coffee on my small table I’m not cramped crouched down for the duration of the storm or if I just want to be inside, I have a Gazelle T4, takes 2 minutes to pitch. But hey, we all are different and the main thing is to get out there and enjoy life whichever is your preference. I’m a retired woman that camps mostly solo very often, in fact I just got back from Yosemite, rained on and off for 1-1/2 days and was very comfortable with plenty of space completely dry.
Agree. Kia Venga is the same, perfectly flat when rear seat is folded. And to make it flat there is the rear panel in the trunk area, under which is a very large storage area, and then under that below another panel is the spare.
You are an absolute perfectionist. And extremely organised. Yes you are. I have watched so many videos on different types of living. Some people are so disorganised. And they have far too much stuff. I am paying $105.00 for each night in a cabin. Its freezing here. They won't let you camp. Oh well. Great way too save money😊🌹🇭🇲💃
The most simple and practical solution.....this is your first video I saw that I found while searching for small car camping setup and I am your happy subscriber now. Love from India.....💓💓
I've slept in a Yaris 1, which is a fair bit smaller than a Fiesta. I left the back seat up, reclined the passenger front as far as it would go and put a box with a foam pad in the foot well. That doesn't give a level bed but it's close enough not to be too uncomfortable and might be the only option for a small car (short of taking out all the passenger seats).
Very neat. I have a 2017 Honda Fit. I haven't yet slept in it but could easily do so. Since the backseats are rarely used, I keep them folded down. Part of my job is installing APUs on semis, and for Freightliner installs we have to cut out a large section of the padded floor for the evaporator under the bunk. I just keep two of those pieces on the floor of my car. They are very durable and provide a good padded base for sleeping if the need arises. In case of emergency, I keep a sleeping bag in the car.
youve done people a service here, saving them the hassle of taking their cars apart and doing all that DIY... this is far easier and retains the usefulness of the vehicle. of course, the bed can stay set up if no one else needs the seats, so it can be semi-permanent. great!
Just did basically this while visiting the Azores There were cheap and a free campground with toilets and showers. Made it affordable and i slept great. I did move the passenger side seat forward and folded forward for some extra room. I didn't have the platform but used luggage.
I took out the back part of my back seats to add extra headspace when back there and storage when I eventually moved cross country. The part you sit on is still there for extra comfort when I drive my dog around, and because it sits very level with the lower area of the trunk. We mostly slept in a tent, but the car was plenty comfy for my pup and I for nights we got to a camp spot late or stealth camped in a parking lot
You could also get a hatch latch extension which holds the boot open about 3/4 inch at the bottom -This keeps the air flowing and hopefully keeps down condensation.
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you for sharing. I am trying to convert my Daihatsu Terios into a camper for outings and camping in the rain. The plastic containers used for leveling and storage at the same time..great idea!!!
Interesting video, didn't know the Fiesta rear seats folded that flat. Some makes (Honda in particular) have really flat folding rear seats. There are some manufacturer/models that have a flat folding passenger 'table' seat as well, for that bit of extra headroom. Still wishing my current car had had the 'folding rear seat' option ticked at purchase. I got it s/h and had no idea that it was an optional extra...
You are right. Current Fiesta rear seats do NOT fold even close to that flat. The video doesn't really show how bad the lowest position actually is. Just STEEP 'UPHILL'!!! It is a HUGE design flaw whatever you use your Fiesta for! Big, BIG, SHAME on Ford. But she found her own great, fantastic solution. 🙂 Thanks so much for the great video! 🙂 🙂 🙂
My Getz doesn’t quite fold down completely flat but I padded out the low spots with old newspapers, then put a narrow airbed over it, and got a reasonable night’s sleep. Call it a poverty hack, but it really costs nothing if you were going to throw out the newspapers anyway !
very economical and comfortable. The diagonal of the rear area should fit most people. You save $100~200 per night and with that money you can do much more.
Excellent vid. Been looking for similar set up in my Mk1 Focus, one tip I found was to remove the rear seat bases completely (easily done, just a couple of bolts) , then the back seat upright can fold completely flat (I travel solo so no need for seat bases!), no nasty step to worry about. I wouldn't be brave enough to have my windows uncovered though-need to figure out how to make some window blackouts!
@@libertadnua5327 Hi, yes I remove the bases of the rear seat...this little video explains the process..although he removes the back part as well, I don't usually do that as they fold down real flat when just the bases are removed. ruclips.net/video/xi0Qrydq4G4/видео.html Hope it helps!
Thank you for this! I’ve a 3 door fiesta and I’m hoping the same set up works. Heading to IKEA at the weekend for the tabletop and going away next Monday on a road trip for a day and night to test it out!!!!
Youd be surprised how many people are actually living in their cars atm. Gym membership for showers in the morning and a warehouse job. Youre right as rain.
I’m considering taking out the passenger seat in my Golf, would leave room for my small compost toilet. Years ago I took out the passenger seat in an old VW bug. It allowed me to carry bulky stuff that otherwise wouldn’t fit. My Golf has weird fold down back seats. I haven’t really figured out what I can accomplish. This video gives me some great ideas. ❤️🐈⬛😎 Now if I could just find a good VW mechanic (not a dealer) to go over the whole car, I’d be on the road. It’s an old Golf and needs a top to bottom checkup so I don’t have issues on the road. BTW, I’d probably get one of those hatchback tents to give me more room when camping.
Great video, I’m trying to set up my Fiat 500x, but it’s hard to find wooden items, your plank in the back is wonderful. I’d never thought of taking the head rests off the back seat. Subscribed. :)
I have a fiat as well. No way I could possibly do that. Sleep in it. Far too small. However, when I have gone camping. I do put all the seats down for my tent etc....
So good to see this wagon. The vehicle looks exactly the same as mine which is a Nissan. My rear seats fold almost completely flat. I am 5ft 2 and sleep on a trifold mattress which can fold up into seat as well and no prob sitting up in bed either. I was wondering how to cook or prepare food without carting a table when bed set up and you have provided the perfect solution. Many thanks!.
I love my hatchback - I own a Kia Cerarto GT, and have slept in the back when visiting my dad out west. just slap a matress in the back and I'm sorted. I'm glad to see this and go even further with it! Your video shows some interesting ideas for future endeavors! thankyou!
Very nice--but the operative question is how much trouble it was to find plastic tubs of exactly the right dimensions to fit in the back seat floor space *and* come up to just the correct height to extend the sleeping space. There was also time involved in making the wooden extension. Still, a very cool setup IAC.
Thanks, the wooden piece is from IKEA. It's a tabletop without modification. The small box supports the big one. The big one on top is also secured by the front seat pressure. It doesn't have to be the perfect size. Can always be adjusted based on the car model. They're making many types of these boxes these days that come in different sizes. So it should be easy to find a good size.
Great job very simple. I did something very similar with my old Mazda 325. Back seat bases came out and I relocated them on top of boxes similar to yours. Did a couple of trips just before pandemic. I used what I had and fortunately the layout of the car didn’t require the wooden board as your did. Unfortunately the car passed away in Brent Cross in 2020 😢and I haven’t managed to convert my Citigo. Anyone managed to convert their citigo/mii/up? Nice job, thank you for sharing.
I have same car and have been fantasizing knowing I could do it! Thanks for the ideas! Anyway you can give me the dimensions of the plywood/tote containers in a comment reply also what kind of wood finish that is. Thanks!
You can get those rain-guards for the windows that let you crack the windows open for a couple of inches without rain getting in. Useful all the time, but especially when sleeping in a vehicle.
Thanks for sharing this video. I recently purchased a Ford EcoSport, which is a raised Ford Fiesta (hatchback) that you have. I was wondering how I could make a sleeping area out of the vehicle.
Thank you for the idea with the trunk! My Mitsubishi Mirage can fit a queen size air mattress, but due to the wheel wells, it turns into a taco, and isn't flat. I'll put some wood in there.
Ah, 6ft 3ins may be asking a bit much of a smallish hatchback 🚗 unless you’re prepared to take out the front driver’s seat. I’m 5ft 9ins, and I’ve done all sort of experiments with my Hyundai Getz. Folding the front seats forward, the back seats down, levelling the boot well out with storage boxes, the space between the front and back seats with 3 small plastic stools (one modified to fit over the central hump on the car floor), etc., and then an inflatable mattress over this. Still had to sleep diagonally to accommodate my average size height. You could also devise some sort of protective cover for the gear lever on the floor at the front of the car. That way you can (hopefully in your case) poke your legs through the gap between the front 2 seats, when stretching out your body. I used small cushions for this task, which did a reasonable job. So there you are … I’ve had a few reasonable nights sleep in my Getz, but I’d have to radically change a few things if this was to become long-term.
I am planning a month, maybe two months trip to Grand Tetons and Banff. I am going to buy a used car. I won't be sleeping in the car every night, but at least half the time to save on hotel costs. Any suggestions on what car would be best? Oh, I am 6' tall.

The 7 seater Peugeot 5008 has this feature on top specs - idea camping car with around 2k litres of space!
It doesn't. That's why he compensated with a wood panel
Honda Jazz seats fall perfectly flat, I’ve camped it in multiple times because of it
This is a Great Idea.! I have a Small Car and if It Rains Very Heavy to Put my Tent Up.! This is what I shall be doing.! Thanks.! 😁👍
I love this content! I should just take off the headrests, then I don't have to remove my seats, LOVE IT! 👍♥️
Very nice and neat! I get inspired to take my Mini Cooper out for a sleepover. 👍
Very cool!!! It'd even be possible to put the passenger seat down for more space if needed! Awesome set up
fantastic video! I just bought an '18 elantra gt and was hoping to do something like this driving out west. thank you for the video
what model of the ford fiesta is this? in All the fiesta’s i’ve seen the back seats don’t fold down flat.
Mk7
very economical and comfortable.
I wouldn't be brave enough to have my windows uncovered though-need to figure out how to make some window blackouts!
just the same as you with a 2door focus mk1 you removed the seats to get more space?
@@libertadnua5327 Hi, yes I remove the bases of the rear seat...this little video explains the process..although he removes the back part as well, I don't usually do that as they fold down real flat when just the bases are removed. ruclips.net/video/xi0Qrydq4G4/видео.html Hope it helps!
WeatherTech sells a window cover kit for almost all vehicles for around $120.
I have a little Honda Fit hatchback and I have done the same thing for years. It’s awesome!!❤❤
That is awesome!
Same here with my Fit
Thank you for this! I’ve a 3 door fiesta and I’m hoping the same set up works. Heading to IKEA at the weekend for the tabletop and going away next Monday on a road trip for a day and night to test it out!!!!
Ps. Where did you get the window coverings from?
You can Google Car Shades
Well, I'll be Dipped 🤣. I knew it could be done. Good to see it. Very clever. I have a Suzuki similar size. Thanks for sharing! 🦋
Now if I could just find a good VW mechanic (not a dealer) to go over the whole car, I’d be on the road. It’s an old Golf and needs a top to bottom checkup so I don’t have issues on the road.
BTW, I’d probably get one of those hatchback tents to give me more room when camping.
Keeping it simple and smart. Nice set up!
I do this in my kia ceed, the backseats actually fold down flat, its perfect for car camping!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽yes- showing how easy it can be to set up and actually get out there. Thank you!
If you get a set of window rain deflectors, when you open the rear window, there is only a small area that will let rain in ( on a mk6 / 7 Fiesta)
Good tips. I've to go away for work next mth and hotel prices are sky high. So I'm hoping to save some money. Thanks
Fold down rear seats are a must have in small cars
Wow awesome and cheapest conversion like from india bro
Looks a great set up
So good to see this wagon.
Dude... This is so... Simple, wtf 😅 amazing.
What an organized man😍
I just bought a c-he and needed a great idea! Thanks for this video
Glad it was helpful!
I had no idea my Fiesta could do this. Looking forward to trying it out.
I love my hatchback - I own a Kia Cerarto GT, and have slept in the back when visiting my dad out west. just slap a matress in the back and I'm sorted. I'm glad to see this and go even further with it! Your video shows some interesting ideas for future endeavors! thankyou!
Very well thought out man
I love this i have a Peugeot 208 and I’m about to see if I can achieve it !!
@@farawayporchdo you have the dimensions of the piece of wood for wooden extension please
Best set up seen
I'm about to camping in about 2 weeks
I may borrow this idea 😎
Thanks for sharing this video. I recently purchased a Ford EcoSport, which is a raised Ford Fiesta (hatchback) that you have. I was wondering how I could make a sleeping area out of the vehicle.
What size storage boxes did you use in the back seat please, great video by the way..😊
Here are the sizes, found them in the comments:
Clear Box: 36.5W x 46.5L x 25.5h (cm)
Opaque box: 40W x 55L x 18.5h (cm)
Wood100x6Ocm
Thank you so much, ❤
Thank you for the idea with the trunk! My Mitsubishi Mirage can fit a queen size air mattress, but due to the wheel wells, it turns into a taco, and isn't flat. I'll put some wood in there.
I like those window covers.
Absolutely beautiful set up! Brilliant 👏👏ty!😊
oooo.this looks great!.so easy.love ur cooking by the way!
Never buy a car you can’t sleep in. 😂
You can even sleep in smartcar
Always wondered about the front passenger seat you've sorted it !
Comfy, cozy, save a few bucks and surround yourself with beautiful scenery. 😊
Wow, you have a great set up! Subscribed!
Lovely 👍 I am in favour of carry less if possible. This one justified.
Top man
Well done
Thank you for this! Exactly what I need!
Ford Fiesta...love it.
I hope you can tell me what is the size of your square box that you placed at the head? That’s fantastic.
Clear Box: 36.5W x 46.5L x 25.5h (cm)
Opaque box: 40W x 55L x 18.5h (cm)
Wood100x6Ocm
Could you push front seats further ahead and rests too. And maybe sleep in other direction if I am taller like 6,3 ??
Awesome info, thanks. Now I just got to get my hatchback fixed, lol
Could you tell us about traveling in this car? Where and how did you drive? How track is developind? What do you take in your journey? Thank you!
Where can I get that wooden plank in the boot
IKEA 100x60cm tabletop
I am planning a month, maybe two months trip to Grand Tetons and Banff. I am going to buy a used car. I won't be sleeping in the car every night, but at least half the time to save on hotel costs. Any suggestions on what car would be best? Oh, I am 6' tall.
Hi! Awesome video ;) what are the measurements of that wooden board? Thankss
Thanks! It's IKEA Linnmon 100x60 cm
love this!! thank you, will try this method soon.
I love this going to try it with my Fiat Panda
Very sensible way to get through this.
Wow looks very easy. Great video
This is great, I'm doing it with my Corsa utility bakkie soon
I've been camping in my little Suzuki Ignis, now i know i brought far too much stuff with me. Thanks for your tips 😊
How do you manage keeping the humidity off from your windows whilst you are sleeping in it?
