I'm 21. I'm not an oldie yet. I may never be. However, I, too, cried from this song.
My mom used to sing a variation to us at bed. She would sing, "litte boy, you're tired, i know why you're blue, because you had a very busy day."
Then she would say things relevant to the day like "but you had lot's of fun with (friend name), and played with Coco too (dog lol), little boy you had a busy day. Busy day!"
On the last busy day, she would tickle us, and then after we laughed, she would smile and say, "I love you."
She's still alive, but it's hard for me to picture a world without her, and I'm still crying somehow.
Thank you, everyone, for sharing your stories. This song has truly affected us in a way we couldn't comprehend when we were younger.

My late father left for Hong Kong in 1949, before we could join him the Korean War broke out...we were not to see him for three years, sadness was never far from my heart at the missing of him, my beloved Grandfather, with whom we were staying, would sing this song to me
    - I thought he had composed it just for me......he sensed my sadness....listening to this evokes all those memories

Among our great oldies that touched our hearts and remind us of how blessed we were, do you remember the alphabet song? A your Adorable, B your so Beautiful, C you are a cutie full of charms...? Precious to sing to your loved ones. I sing it to my poodle. 😄 when I was young a boyfriend sang it to me... and that is how I learned it. God Bless each of you!

I think, dream and reminisce of my childhood so often. Songs like this take me back to those wonderful carefree days....

I had this on a mixed l.p. record in the 1960s with other songs i miss.i cried like a baby just now hearing this, it reminded me of my childhood which was very very bad but music helped me through. I always wished for loving parents like the dad represented in this song .i never had a nice mom or dad they just got worse , i cried because i remember as a child being so full of hope for a change , i cried thinking of the terrible life i have had, i cried for my daughter who has bad health but i cried with happiness that i learned from my parents how to BE a wonderful loving supportive parent, to never verbally, physically, or sexually abuse my daughter all i hsd to do to achieve this was do OPPOSITE of EVERYTHING they did.

Little man you're cryin', I know why you're blue
    Someone took your kiddy-car away
    Better go to sleep now
Little man you've had a busy day...
Johnny won your marbles, tell you what we'll do
Dad will get you new ones right away
    Better go to sleep now
Little man you've had a busy day...
You've been playin' soldier, the battle has been won
The enemy is out of sight
Come along there soldier, put away your gun
The war is over for tonight...
Time to stop your schemin', time your day was through
Can't you hear the bugle softly say?
    Time you should be dreamin'
Little man you've had a busy day...
    Time you should be dreamin'
Little man you've had a busy day...

I remember , I was around 4 or 5 years of age,....my mom, who had a lovely voice, would sing this song to me on my parents bed after we finished a favorite story book. She'd then roll me over, lift up my shirt and softly scratch my whole back as she sang. It was heaven. I barely made it to the end of the song before falling asleep. Those were the days. RIP mom & dad ....May we see each other again.

My mother used to sing this to me as a lullaby. Just this evening I had my memory jarred when they played a few seconds of it in an off-beat movie ("Lost in Paris") I was watching. Previously, it never even occurred to me I might find it on RUclips, and I wasn't sure of the lyrics until hearing it again. Went right to my computer and found it. Thanks for posting.
