This man knows the struggle of opening a gym and is sharing the secrets to us other strongman. You could say he’s running himself of business. But he’s helping others that can’t go to his gym
For basic, personal use I agree. If you have aspirations to compete and want to practice your farmers walk, save up and buy a set, or find a place that has some. The weight will be loaded out to the front and back making it shift more if hand placement isn't perfect, leading to some serious wrist strength building. What we used at my gym instead of this, is two of the ez curl bars. Similar loading but even harder to stabilize at the wrist. If you can walk 200lbs per hand with a pair of those, 350+ per hand is cake with a real farmers walk set.
This proves that it's not always about the gym or the equipment, but what YOU (or the trainer) can do with what you got. I love power-rows but cannot afford my own sled/plates right now so tire/tow straps will do! Thank you Alan!!
Thanks for the video, Alan! I just made an an axle bar out of pipe like you suggested, and it works great. I filled a 7 foot section of 1.5 inch galvanized steel pipe with concrete and it ended up weighing just under 35 lbs.
I made farmers walk handles from an iron profile they use in construction. I had them cut to around 1 and a half meter and welded handles on them aswell as 2 small 50mm towers to fit plates. Best farmer walk handles I've ever used and it cost me next to nothing.
An old video but still... - if you looking for strong cheap/free straps for anything, get a fire hose. Your local fire department will probably give you one for free. These hoses come in 25-50 meters (~82-165 feet), you can make endless things from it. I got one 50 meters hose and it was enough to make pulling straps, gymnastic rings straps, belt for weighted dips, a couple of adjustable add-on resistance weights for bar (instead of chains), and I still have left overs. I saw one guy making a CrossFit battle rope from this hose and other use it to make bags, wallets and whatever.
Great idea with the chain handle... I think I already have all that stuff... Last night I got a nice loader tire for $40 and it fits perfectly in the back of my pickup. The problem is, I can't get a decent grip on it to load it into the back of the truck. I'm thinking that if I can get a decent chain handle on it, I can deadlift it just enough to shove it in by myself...
Dude thank you for the genius ideas. Especially with the pulls on the tire. I just moved up on top of a mountain in Costa Rica and I am limited here. No gym nearby about an hour away
I'm an arm wrestling athlete I think strong man workouts will give a serious amount of strength.which is the important thing in our sport, anyway Best video, I'm starting these workouts in few days,, thanks mnh for such useful info, thank you very much❤️❤️👍🇮🇳
Just found your channel as I am really getting in to strongman. I want to make a lot of my own equipment as I really want to compete in some form of strong man and you have helped give me loads of ideas mate. Brilliant channel, keep it up!
I found a few even cheaper options for my girlfriend. Axle bar: Get pipe insulation with 1 inch inner and 2 inch outer diameter. Wrap it with none slip tape at the points you grip, cut it open and wrap it around a normal barbell. It'll fall apart fairly quickly with an advanced male using it but it's sufficient for most strongwomen pressing. Rope pulls: Find someone strong and have them grip the rope facing the opposite direction. As you pull have them feed you the rope but applying a lot of resistance. Atlas stone: Buy air drying clay in bulk (works out a fraction of the price of buying a stone), form a ball out of it and wait for it to dry. Don't know how well it'll work for large stones but the 80lb stone I've made is holding together nicely (being careful not to drop it). Since it's a lower density than concrete and forms a larger stone for it's size should train the technique required for heavier stones.
Perfect for what I'm looking for man thanks a lot. I dont know of any strongman training by me and I'm looking to get into the sport since power lifting is kind of boring me after 10 years
Great post again Alan! Thankfully I’ve got access to a fully equipped CrossFit/Strongman gym. But still I got some ideas for my home gym, cause well... sometimes I don’t want to leave house haha
I'm 60. I lift weights as a, hmmm, Strengthbuilder, I do like compound bb exercises, since my 16s. Man, you changed my approach to everything I know of the Iron World. In a matter of fact... you're a hero to me. Besides, you're funny as fuck... and have a wonderful music taste. Greetings from Brazil/RJ/Rio de Janeiro/Copacabana.
Yeah I met Zach Even Esh at the UnderArmor training facility in Baltimore when he did a seminar in Baltimore! He was a cool guy!Oh yeah BTW if you aint got a Log you can Log Clean/Press with a Keg;just have it sit flat on the ground and grab it like you would a Log Bar!
I wish I could tryout atlas stones, but no gym around here has them. Living in the city without a truck or anything makes getting a sizable natural stone kind of hard as well. I do have a 124 lbs Monster Kettlebell that I occasionally lift without the handle yet feel like its smaller size changes the lift a bit as it's more cupping with the hands then wrapping with the arms to make use of the back muscles more. Plus, being a sphere that naturally wants to roll, purposely avoiding the handle so that it won't "help" often makes it even more awkward.
Excellent video but 35lb plates come in very handy for T-bar rows when you just have a landmine to use, they give a better range of motion but you knew that already.
Great video. What length of chain do you recommend for the DIY farmer carry? I have some plates and fat gripz and want to do the same, but I am unsure what the right length to buy is. Thank you.
fuck yes thank you so much sir Alan.loved the framers walk idea thats my ego liftin crap everyone gotta have one.never thought that thanks much. love from texas👊🇺🇸
Its such a pity its hard to find 50mm OD steel piping in Australia that isn't square, only 1.5m long, or 6.5m long. Everything else comes in round 2.5m lengths.
Great tips! Unfortunately I have no access to your Untamed Strength and was looking to use my yard for my strongman workouts. I was looking at a piece of scaffolding tube to use as a barbell - 28mm (for starters and up to about 150kg load). Would this work or has anyone tried this at home?
I am doing the Starting Strength novice progression Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Would I be messing things up by throwing in some of these conditioning exercised on Tuesdays and Thursdays?
2 years too late, but I just made the farmers walk handles from this vid today. I am 6 feet tall, so I guess-timated about 4 feet of chain would do it. After loading a 45 lbs plate I still have 1-2 inch clearance from the floor.
When industrial civilization collapses Alan will still be in business.
Anabolic Amaranth will probably default to Fred Flinstone or start a cult like Mad Max 🤣
He'll probably be the cause, like somthing out of fightclub
Kinda happening rn
This aged like wine
@DIV1NITAL haha it’s as if he was prepared for the unfortunate future
I live for these DIY and garage gym set ups
doubtful
I wish I had an Untamed Strength gym where I live.
Ramon Suarez make ur own
Same
A lot of places have strong man gyms
move
I wish your mom lived where I live.
Never thought I'd be so impressed with a chain looped through a weight plate, but here I am.
This man knows the struggle of opening a gym and is sharing the secrets to us other strongman. You could say he’s running himself of business. But he’s helping others that can’t go to his gym
These Farmers Walks handles got to be the best idea.

As an alternative for the grip, PVC elbow pipes work great.

Alan makes the best videos I've pick up alot from watching him. Keep up the good work Alan your really good at what you do.
Thanks for the video, Alan! I just made an an axle bar out of pipe like you suggested, and it works great. I filled a 7 foot section of 1.5 inch galvanized steel pipe with concrete and it ended up weighing just under 35 lbs.
This deserve be a serie! I LOVE THE IDEA

Great stuff Thrall! I've been lifting natural rocks in our fields since I was a kid. It's a great feeling but not as easy as you may think.
It's great to see some more strong man training videos. Keep up the great work Alan.
Yup, starting to assemble mine. Was lifting rocks yesterday and carrying concrete blocks. Getting me a big tire

First video I've seen and im sold. That intro was metal af 🔥🤘
Attending my first strongman comp next month! This video was clutch
Nice variation!! Improvise Addapt Overcome. Everything creative work fine, excellent DIY functional training! Great Alan... Train untamed
I use the 35 pounders sometimes. I'm ashamed of myself now
There's nothing wrong with 35s, as long as you don't pretend they're 45s.
I use kg instead of pounds. Also use donuts. Idgaf. The donuts are mostly for dumbbells though.
I use them to raise the front of my feet when I do calf raises.

really like the way you edited this with the pauses and stuff very cool
Awesome video man, i'm in the process of making the equipment for my boot camp now! Tyres, sandbags and chains are my best friend so far!
I'm an arm wrestling athlete

Man I loved that show back in the day “American Gladiator “
Genius!!! Thank you for the ideas sir. Five stars!!!!! *****
Awesome and helpful video as always. Keep it up Alan!
The chain for farmer walk is something I want to try

Hell yea good for military units that for whatever reason just can't afford anything lol, thanks man good video
Congratulations on 700k
Hey!! I use 35’s. I have a couple sets of em, and only one set of 45’s at home. They still add up nicely for dead’s and squats and bench
The Great Alan 👍👍👍💪💪💪 I like the end of the video 😜

Thank you Alan, this is extremely helpful

Great video i am going to test out some of these ideas
This should be a new series

The farmers implements could be something to throw in the gym-bag. How long should the pieces of chain be I wonder?
Such an awesome vid! ive been looking for a gym in san jose with strongman equipment that isnt too pricey
Really like the video! Always want to do more strong man but I dont have any goods gyms near me.
Garrett LaMarre Just make your own - it's more simple than you think.
Thanks for the farmers tips
4:37 Shifty Eyes haha... you "found" it, suuuuure
Got alot from this!, nicely done!
I use 35 pound plates. They help keep my heavy bag on the ground while I’m destroying it.
Great videos
Whatever happened to the untamed special series? I loved those insights into exercise variations :)
How long of a chain should i get for farmer carries?
Good idea.
awesome video!
Thank you
Great video. What length of chain do you recommend for the DIY farmer carry? I have some plates and fat gripz and want to do the same, but I am unsure what the right length to buy is. Thank you.

Cool video again!
fuck yes thank you so much sir Alan.loved the framers walk idea thats my ego liftin crap everyone gotta have one.never thought that thanks much. love from texas👊🇺🇸
Hey this is a serious request... Do a video about your beard care.
I use the 30lb weights to curl in the squat rack
Its such a pity its hard to find 50mm OD steel piping in Australia that isn't square, only 1.5m long, or 6.5m long.
Everything else comes in round 2.5m lengths.
Awesome!
Can you do a video on all your strong man equipment
Bro your awesome!
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Thank you, I love the sport but as you mention the stuff gets expensive quick
"found" is a flexible term
so is oral

Ive been thinking about strongman, and being from the Granite State, we have plenty of rocks lying around.
NEW HAMPSHIRE!!!!
What was the length of chain, please?
I want to know also

I have stood on 16 35 pound plates in my gym to do Rack Pulls and never been approached even one time
Mike Thrall, sick pack beards.
Thank you sir
Nice one!
Kettlebells make life much simpler
Schedule 80 steel 1 and a half pipe for axle bar...
Is that a new shirt for the website you're wearing?
Alan, have your Strongmanlifts suffered from all the Powerlifting you are doing lately? Like, less endurance for carrying events?
shiittt!!! im getting idea now! thx!!
Just make sure you don't weld any galvanized steel for your homemade axle! It releases poisonous fumes...
Someone can tell me, if a get a 2 inch pipe, will it fit on any olympic plates?
Can someone please help me find out which blue adidas shoes Alan wears? For some reason I can’t find them
Damm bro i r full of cool ideas.
How long should the chain be for the Farmers Walk. 2m,1m, 1,5m?
Can find these equipment on the street ?
