It's heartwarming to witness someone from a different culture embrace and explore our beloved Filipino grocery store with such enthusiasm and curiosity.
I must say, our grocery stores are a treasure trove of unique and flavorful delights, and seeing a foreigner genuinely appreciate our diverse selection of snacks, sauces, and condiments is a true testament to the richness of our cuisine.
To the foreigner in the video: thank you for taking the time to immerse yourself in our culture! Your reactions were priceless, and it was heartening to see you try out our traditional delicacies with an open mind and a smile on your face.
To my fellow Filipinos: let's take this as a reminder of the beauty and uniqueness of our own culture. It's easy to overlook the wonders of our local stores amidst the hustle of everyday life. Let's embrace our heritage and cherish the simple joys we find in our grocery aisles!
Remember, no matter where we come from, food has the power to connect us all, and it's incredible to see how a foreigner's appreciation for our cuisine can bridge the gap between cultures.
Mabuhay ang kultura natin! (Long live our culture!) 🇵🇭❤

Your store is very impressive. If that’s the way all the stores are there that’s fantastic our best stores don’t look that nice they might have real pretty ceilings and lights, but they’re usually cluttered in the aisles and they don’t have any kind of stock like you showing in the video, I would love to come and shop in your store anytime

Dingdong in the Philippines is also a name for the boy. 😊 There is no bad meaning here..just a plain name, that's all. 😄 Banana catsup is usually sweet while tomato catsup is in a bit sour side.

My cooking hack for onions is using onion powder instead of real ones. Not a fan of banana ketchup, I like soy sauce and kalamansi with a bit of chili as my dipping sauce most of the time. I would recommend trying Argentina or Purefoods corned beef. Purefoods is more expensive but definitely more delish. Enjoy & stay safe!😊

Grocery shopping seems like fun with you two! 😀🫰🏻
It was great learning what “ding dong” means in Thailand and in the UK.
For snacks, the Oshi brand has prawn crackers and other kinds of cracklings. Non-locals often find the prawn crackers pungent smelling, but I guess we’re just used to it, so we don’t mind it as much. It tastes of seafood, like a mix of squid and prawns.
Banana ketchup / catsup was a response to the needy times of WW2 when tomatoes became scarce. I guess, it became a staple since then. I think there are smaller portions being sold in sachets supermarkets. OR just ask for some in a carinderia / restaurant next time you eat out 😀. Locals like to eat fried meat with it. Max’s Restaurant is known to serve their fried chicken with banana ketchup. I personally prefer tomato ketchup though.
I think Magic Sarap is a variation of MSG, and is used as such.
My favorite brand of instant noodles is Lucky Me. I often go for original version of their pancit canton and add homemade chili-garlic oil when I eat them.
I recommend you try chicken afritada in a carinderia before you go for the tinned variety. It’s a tomato-based dish of chicken, potatoes, carros, and bell peppers.
My favorite local brand of canned meat is Delimondo and Purefoods comes in close second. I think Delimondo has the best tasting local corned beef. We also call corned beef as carne norte.
For cured meats, I suggest trying tocino, longganisa, and tapa from Pampanga’s Best. FYI, they’re sweeter than cured meats from other countries, and we often eat them a dipping of spicy vinegar or some pickled veg. (For half a kilo) Thaw the package first, transfer contents to a frying pan, mix in about 2 tablespoons of cooking oil, and set on medium high flame. Water will be drawn out on the first few minutes and flip the meat once in a while. Lower flame when water is drying out and oil is starting to come out. Sear the meat to your liking, and then it’s ready to serve. With rice and fried egg, that’s a common breakfast fare here.
I also like having spanish style sardines or bangus with rice for a quick meal. These are canned or bottled, but I prefer the bottled ones.
Speaking of breakfast, have you tried pan de sal (bread) yet? And coconut jam? Pan de sal is often available in a corner bakery, just ask them what time it is available. You can find the coconut jam in the supermarket. It’s made with reduced coconut cream with muscovado sugar.
I also suggest trying local sweets, cookies and biscuits. Macapuno candies (coconut), yema candies (condensed milk), rosquillos, and otap.

    • @AlwaysonaJourney
      @AlwaysonaJourney  11 месяцев назад

Wow. Thank you so much for all of this information. Much appreciated. Yes, we have tried pan de sal and both like it, especially with sausage and bacon. I haven't tried cococunt jam but it sounds good as I usually like most things with coconut. I am going to google yema candies, rosquillos and otap now. You're wonderful. Thanks again. ;-)

As someone here said, Banana Ketchup is a Pinoy invention (Pinoy is the colloquial word for Filipino) during WWII i think, brought about by a shortage of tomatoes. We use it in our spaghetti too, hence the sweetness. And it is also added in our marinade for our barbecues. :)
About the exorbitant prices of onions here, an onion cartel was actually behind it. I believe our government will be filing a case against them.

Waltermart - same as Walmart (Europe or US)
Robinson - copied by SM, sometimes escalator doesn't work
Shopwise - it's good, cause it's neat to go groceries
Puregold - A mall of Ph
District - y'all need to pack big money for that, only rich people go there
I only go there for Korean products/korean beverages
All home - It's amazing to watch on Cinema there and browsing too cause it's neat

You can actually see banana catchup in most of Filipinos household. Personally I don't like catchup that is sour tho most Fili likes vinegar or sour taste but catchup is an exemption, I am not saying that all Filo but me personally and maybe some of Filos as well. Dingdong is sometimes used as a name or a nickname or a doorbell sound. 😂 It is normal to find different brands or canned products for you to choose what brand would fit your budget and most Filos had their own fav brand.

Personally, I prefer tomato ketchup BUT the only dish I would pair with a banana ketchup is the dish called “tortang talong”. Eggplant dish which was recently said to be the best egg dish out there. It’s quite easy to make, there is a YT video from Lumpia Queen and Andy Cooks should you want to try making it.
Purefoods TJ hotdog is the brand of choice. It’s a bit premium compared to other brands. In the same vein, their Purefoods corned beef also is the best one out there.
Please don’t try those canned prepared meals; adobo, afritada, etc. They are basically struggle meals. Not that tasty and not well made.
You should try instant pancit canton as it is a popular food here. Lucky me is the popular brand.

I still prefer tomato ketchup but if making Filipino bbq then you use banana ketchup. (Originally, also for Filipino spaghetti but now we have ready to mix sauces.) I'm not a big hotdog fan but Puregoods tender juicy i think is the best tasting one or maybe just because it's what we grew up with.
Wow, you really know a lot of snacks already. I like VCut (Bbq), Fishda and those vegetarian chicharons (Marty's or Mang Juan). If you see polvoron, get the HOP brand. They're tasty but sweet. It's a milk snack.

"Carne norte" is actually the less popular term for 'corned beef'. You will usually hear that term in rural villages or towns. In the cities, the old folks still use the term for corned beef.

    • @jboycaceres2871
      @jboycaceres2871 11 месяцев назад

By the way it was the common term by early Filipinos, because they were used to be imported from USA (North America), or in Spanish, "America del Norte". Carne Norte literally means "northern meat", or "meat from the north".
