I saw Bruddah Iz perform at a small club in Waikiki around '85. You're right. When the show was over, he was very warm and approachable... a genuinely lovely human being.
Brother IZ (one word not two letters) was immensely talented! he was also very generous with what little he had my daughter attended the same elementary at May day I carried her school Ukulele back to class and noticed it was a Koa Kamaka Uke there over 1k today. When I asked the teacher about it she said Brother IZ donated a classroom set because elementary school is where he fell in love with music! The Man is a legend
My uncle and cousins are also Hawaiian from a village on Maui, and my uncle along with his siblings all on ukelele, singing in harmony , my uncle the falsetto. Their village song brings tears to my eyes. RIP Uncle Keoni Kauhaahaa❤❤❤
I had the pleasure of seeing one his last concerts. Wearing and oxygen hose smiling and singing like nothing was wrong. He saw tears in my eyes bruh my life is full. . Now I just cry when I listen to him. He made me smile cry laugh be happy. Yet cry.
If you'd like to hear more of his music, my top recommendations would be "Hawaiʻi 78", "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" and "Kaleohano". A lot of his other songs are in Hawaiian so they might be lost on a non-Hawaiian speaker but the heart and talent is still there if you're interested in those as well
The peace this man this song In particularly has created in my life is crazy... Kinda like the side of me the coworkers never get to see because of the injection of peace in my troublesome development years in a hell hole of an upbringing! Music is the path of freeing your soul! Rip big man I hope this is the song welcoming me to the even bigger man up stairs!
I grew up listening to Braddah IZ when I was in high school and he and his brothers were playing music in the 1970s. I know some of his cousins who live here in Northern California. It is hard to explain what IZ means to us kanaka maoli, particularly of my generation. HIs Hawaiʻi Aloha that he sang live at Miloliʻi still brings tears to my eyes.
it may be weird, but anytime i hear a little IZ, its like.. a whole new vibe of gratitude for happiness, like the feeling of happiness itself shld be enjoyed. a lot of his songs tell a story, so the energy grows through out. i can imagine listening to him live back in the day was an incredible experience.
A huge ball of emotions! I’m balling my eyes out while having breakfast and watching my two year old son playing with his toys. Life is amazingly good right now! Life is amazingly good when we are able to wake up and share the day with the ones we love. Great video!
Love IZ!!!!! Very few artists jave had this type of positive impact world wide. His music, his message, his voice and his energy is still holding value for half a century. RIP brodda IZ! Love you bro!
@mrlboyd Your face while listening to this speaks volumes. You are experiencing the same joy that I did upon discovering this beautiful soul and soaking in his light. Even if you don't do anymore reaction videos for IZ, I hope that you get the chance to experience all that he has left behind for us to enjoy.
He was a giant man with the gentlest and humblest soul. He was and still is a big part of Hawaiian Music today. He recorded a lot music before he passed. Some of my favorites are White Sandy Beach, In Dis Life, and Wind Beneath My Wings just to name a few.
My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Kauai, HI in 2010 and they constantly played Iz on the radio. The serenity his voice and music created made our trip complete. Our favorite song of his is "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man." We could not get it out of our heads. The first complete song I learned how to play on the ukulele was his version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Basic, I know, but the calm I feel when I play it makes me want to play it all day long. ❤️🤙
I grew up on Kaua'i. Hope you and your husband had an amazing time, and got to do a helicopter tour over Kaua'i. Unbelievable beauty on the Hawaiian islands
I was 16 when he passed and it was the most emotional morning at school that day. We all paid tribute to him in choir class. Uncle IZ you is a legend and always will be.
Thank you for your second reaction to Israel IZ but you truly havent yet experienced his full voice. Please react to his "Hawai'i 78". I promise you won't regret it. Very different from the two you have heard. It will amaze you. Thanks much, "Mark"
I listen to every song at least twice. First time to feel it, second time to study it. And this is one of those songs where that rings especially true imo
My favorite of his is Some where over the rainbow. Over the rainbow sung by IZ is song of choice for fallen K-9 officers who were killed in action. He sings it so beautifully.
Me too born and raised from Big Island of Hawaii Kona Hawaii. He is from a hawaiian band called Makaha sons he's passed on he had a brother as big as him to that passed on. We called him Bradda Iz he was a legend in Hawaii well loved by hawaii.
Mahalo for sharing. Please listen to 'Hawai'i 78' by him. It is the most beautiful yet heartbreaking song I've heard. The love for a land taken away and desecrated and how our ancestors would view it/us now
Braddah IZ is such a prominent figure beloved by the Hawaiian community, not just because of his music, but also by the aloha he brought to so many people. He was even an activist for Hawaiian sovereignty, speaking out about the displacement of many native Hawaiians and singing songs of protest that many people still sing today I wish I was around to have heard him live or even just speak, but unfortunately I was born a couple years too late
Hawaii lost another great musician with the passing of Israel Ka’anoi “IZZY” Kamakawiwo’ole pronounced Kah-mah-kah-vi-vo-ole on June 26, 1997. He along with his late older brother Skippy were members of the musical group Makaha Son’s of Niihau! Shortly after the death of his older brother, Izzy split from the group and went solo. Music producer, arranger, conductor, maestro John deMello was instrumental and involved in his latter musical endeavors until his untimely death. It is and was a spectacular experience to attend one of his many beachside KANIKAPILA (concerts)!
Hawaii 78. It will grip your soul.
Israel IZ Kamakawiwoʻole Is the embodiment of peace, positivity, and tranquility ♥🌹
For sure
Absolutely
I saw Bruddah Iz perform at a small club in Waikiki around '85. You're right. When the show was over, he was very warm and approachable... a genuinely lovely human being.

He is incredible! I’m a native Hawaiian and I grew up on his music and his brothers music, too. His nickname IZ is pronounced like is…IZ = is.
And his last name, kah-mah-kah-vee-voh-oh-leh .
I have loved Brudda IZ since the first time I heard his angelic voice many years ago ❤️
My uncle and cousins are also Hawaiian from a village on Maui, and my uncle along with his siblings all on ukelele, singing in harmony , my uncle the falsetto. Their village song brings tears to my eyes. RIP Uncle Keoni Kauhaahaa❤❤❤

This is nice, but no one will ever replace Satchmo in my heart with this song....I cry every time I listen to his version.
