It's insane just how many people go to certain schools for sports or genuinely believe that "influencing" is a career choice, especially when such a minute percentage come anywhere close. Sports, music, entertainment in general is the end-all be-all for so many. Our whole society is built around it.

This is so true lets take Taylor swift for example you can see her fans that are to obsessed with her to the point that they do or get into drama whit anyone online who criticize her or her music to the point its like a cult like worship. I think the world would be better off if people would be themselves inside of making there whole personality around someone who doesn't know they exist.

I would guess it comes also with the fall of religion. Today it is seen as something "backwards", so then, as John Calvin said:
"Those who set up a fictitious worship, merely worship and adore their own delirious fancies",
which would be our celebrities, who can't do anything that comes close to their level of fame and adoration, and in most cases should never have amassed that level of fame at all.
