I would guess it comes also with the fall of religion. Today it is seen as something "backwards", so then, as John Calvin said: "Those who set up a fictitious worship, merely worship and adore their own delirious fancies", which would be our celebrities, who can't do anything that comes close to their level of fame and adoration, and in most cases should never have amassed that level of fame at all.
