This is a wonderful video, that kits me in the heart. I'm 16. For the past three years I've gone on 2 and 3 week canoe/hike/portage trips. In just a few days, I'll be off for 4 weeks. On these trips, I've changed so much. No phone, no internet. Just me, good friends and the great outdoors :)
four years later and still one of the best camping videos I've ever seen. I've watched it several times and it never gets old. It gives me inspiration and hope!!! Thank you.
Seldom has a video about backcountry wilderness camping captured so many of my own sentiments and visually presented my own experiences out there. Beautiful videography and narration. Filmed in Killarney Provincial Park, here in Ontario, Canada.
***** Of all forms of camping I've done: backpacking in temperate rainforests, up mountains to glaciers, desert camping, and winter camping in igloos, there is no better camping than canoe-tripping! Cheers, - Ozy
Thanks for this excellent video. You put into words so eloquently what I feel myself. I have never travelled across the Atlantic, but was struck by how much your scenery looks like Scotland, where I live. My Mum took me out to sea in a 2 seater kayak when I was 4 years old. She taught me not to be afraid of the waves, how to ride them and make them work for you. I am now officially a senior citizen myself, have been retired 2 years, and hope to pass on my Mum's skills to my grandchildren. Thanks again for a video that shows such sanity in an increasingly crazy World. This is the way we were meant to live!
Beautiful film! Not only about the beauty of Nature, but about HOW TO. HOW TO live right, how to respect Nature, how to be grateful to HIM, who gave us all this. Thank you so much! )
This video encapsulates the exact reasons why I go camping and why I bring my young son on separate trips. Nothing feels like a chore out there, it is a necessity to have firewood, keep things minimal, portage to the next lake, make meals etc... My favourite thing is to cook over the fire. Don't bring any fire starter, paper or anything from home to start a fire. This ingrains the absolute importance of fire as a heat source and fuel to cook dinner etc.... For me, this is crutial to the experience of being out there. Also Nothing like sitting at the shore at 5:00am watching the mist burn off the lake and watching the sun rise. Wilderness camping has a mystical feeling where you feel connected to the earth and nature and always makes me wonder why it is we think we need to live the way we do in the city, it almost doesn't seem natural to live in big cities. Great video!
Superb video. Families in quiet, clean, and beautiful nature. Escaping the world and drawing close to our Maker, our Father. Swimming, good food, and no set schedules - just goals - make the experience wonderful as well. Thank you for elevating the attribute of preparation. If you don't prepare to succeed, you prepare to fall short of excellence, and draw closer to failure. Enjoy nature and wilderness where you can find it and preserve it for the years to come. Thanks for the video.
Great video. My Grandfather also said that there is no better classroom then the great outdoors. By God he was right. Thanks for sharing your video. I really enjoyed watching. Enjoy & be safe !
All of you did a brilliant job of illuminating the experience of camping for us. Even watching your video on my phone seemed to bring me into a camping adventure. I practically set my phone down to start packing and leave technology behind.
great video love the bit with the kids I love taking my kids away camping and canoeing the relaxation away from I pads and play stations is second to none thank you :-)
The inspiration in this video is timeless. I watch it and share it all the time. Makes me cry sometimes it's so true and pure. Thanks for s well made short film, it is truly remarkable. I especially like it in spring when we are getting ready fur it own over night waterway camping trips. God bless you.
Thank you Daryl and family for sharing this beautiful video. I have two boys that have done wilderness camping with me however, I just wish we could have done more. You are very talented and kind. Well done
So abslolutely beatiful ! The making of the video is just insane, as well as the scenery. The feeling you give in that video, and what you say, is exactly what canoeing is about. Just beautiful ! stay safe and enjoy natur ! atb, Max (BCB)
A beautiful film that surely captures the essence of wilderness camping. I've not been on a trip yet where everything goes exactly as planned but that's inevitably what we end up talking about afterwards. Each trip we learn a bit more and get more comfortable in the environment where we really belong. I can't wait for ice out! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Larry. The unexpected is as rewarding as the planned and sometimes more so. In the film, the portage from Killarney Lake to Norway Lake was supposed to be a leisurely paddle through a meandering creek and then a short portage to finish up the remainder of the 1300km. We now talk about that portage as quite the adventure, though at the time we considered abandoning the creek and portaging to the portage many times. We progressively got wetter and muddier, tried to move fallen trees and ended up pulling the canoe through most of the shallow creek. Those make great stories for years to come.
Real camping is bringing the smallest amount of gear possible, and at least partially depending on your surroundings for food wether you hunt, fish or forage. When I used to go camping with my parents we would bring a car load of food and gear like a small grill and ice chest. But once I started camping with minimal gear I came to appreciate each tool I had, the animals and land. I just bought a canoe and look forward to using it to camp. Great video, loved it.
Taking a break from studying and needed a little peaceful time. Thanks for your video, I'm planning for a spring trip on the St John River in Maine this May. This video helps me to escape to that quite place in my thoughts of things to come and trips gone by. Thank you.
great video touching on what camping is really about. Really enjoyed your post processing of your footage and graduations. I even enjoyed the not I perfect sliders shots. Best part was watching the Soto stove cooking a msr pot. Also like your cooking patrol wood box.
What a great video, not sure why anyone would dislike it. I'm building a small wooden boat precisely for such adventures, can't wait for her maiden voyage!
Terrific video... you captured it perfectly from the detached realities of normal life to the simplicity that which camping and wilderness bring - and a new perspective on life... thanks again.
A simple and honest message about wilderness camping, parenting, and the importance of letting our kids push through the boredom border to find their own way. Getting unwired tends to be brief when you head into the wild. Then the tasks at hand coupled with exploring your surroundings takes over. So it's not really boredom, but rather a brain shift towards self-reliance. It's been while out-of-doors that my own kids discovered unequalled pleasure in being siblings. I just finished laying out our summer and fall camping trips. This video is a reminder to value the simple. Once able to plan such trips, the complicated in life becomes much more manageable. Unfortunately Killarney's fish and aquatic life were decimated by man-made acid rain. A reminder that as much as we may want to limit government regulation of our our life, without it the damage is far reaching and it will take generations for the park to recover. We all have a role in stewardship. Well done video Daryl. While I may not share your vision of a creator, I respect the creation. It is a wonder.
I would like to express my appreciation to you for taking the time to make this film. It truly capture the very subtle nuances of camping and getting away from it all. I am just now getting ready to introduce my family to camping and at the end of watching your movie... my youngest said "I want to go camping". We have a cabin on a river that is off grid and really enjoy the simplicity of being up there ... but I am ready to take it to the next step and your film inspired me to do just that... so thank you. Best regards, jason
Hi, I just want too start off by saying what a fantastic and euphoric video you have made, I absolutely loved it! I live in England and I would love to visit Killarney Provincial Park but I don't know how to get there via plane from Gatwick. Do you know any airports near that all? I could do the rest from there. Hello Joe, I was struck by how much the scenery in the film looks like Scotland. Perhaps you might consider a trip to Scotland as a much cheaper and easier start, and try Canada later on? There are lots of Lochs here, and wild camping is much easier in Scotland than England. Possibly because we have only 1/10th of the population, something like 2/3 of the land, and much, much more coastline. We have a "right to roam" act, which means you can camp just about anywhere. I have never had any trouble over camping. On a couple of occasions, a farmer has called at my tent for a chat, one was happy for me to camp, provided that I promised to call at the farmhouse before setting off in the morning, so he could give me a massive fryup to see me on my way. Really enjoyed your video and the thoughtful dialogue you put into it. You have truly captured the essence of wilderness camping on the water. We love to wilderness- camp at Courtright Reservoir, east of Fresno, CA and just south of Yosemite Nat'l Park.. (It is one of the few places in California where the public can legally camp outside of designated campgrounds.) Watching your video, I almost felt like I was right there again....small islands to kayak to, raspberry-colored mirror-flat water at dusk, and most of all to experience the closeness to our Maker of heaven and earth. Thank you for sensitively sharing your wilderness experience with the world!
Beautiful video, friend! Thanks for it! Canoe camping is very enjoyable, and you captured the reasons why I enjoy it so much. I'm a fan of Josh Garrel's music, too!

Daryl Phillips That's a pretty cool video of Josh Garrels. He has such a unique voice with a RANGE! He can really hit so high notes. His music is very accoustic and original. Wow, What A film!!! Brought me back to some of my camping experiences.Your film is at least as good as some of Bill Masons Film. Keep making more please.
This was an amazing video. You truly have hit on the heart of it all. I am hoping this year to engage a few people in the wilderness experience for their first time. I am definitely focused on prep because I really want to make it an experience they will want to revisit. Looking forward to watching all your videos.
I love the Canadian Wilderness. I also love the Wilderness areas of the mountains of Nevada. So different, but they have one thing in common, few people.
I'd Like to go out wilderness camping. Although i cant do it now i look forward to doing it someday ! Im now 16 Years old and i come from Germany. I save my money for a few years and then me and my best friend are going to go wilderness camping together, i want to do this because im sick of this "City Life" and going to work and stuff like that. It's just so stressful that i want to break out of this rythm atleast once in my lifetime.
AsOx. I very hope that you do manage to go canoe camping. I took my children camping before they were 1 year old, and started to teach them how to kayak before they were old enough to go to school. I feel sorry that you are feeling pressured by life at only 16. Previously, each generation has had life a little easier than their parents, but you teenagers have a tougher life than I had - I just wish that I could make the World better for you! I am 60, and retired 2 years ago. I live in Scotland, and am having "the time of my life". I walked a 212 mile trail across Scotland, and, for the first time in my life, could take as long as I like over it. In scotland, we have a law that means we can camp where we like, provided you do not do any damage. I have 2 kayak trips booked for this Summer, on the North west coast of Scotland. Will spend most of this Summer hiking, camping and cycling. Good luck my friend - you have the right spirit.
Really great film!!!!! words of wisdom throughout my friend :) Us human beings need to get back to the similar way of being "at times" it really clenses the soul.
Really enjoyed this short film i have 4 young kids myself and this has really put me in a good mood. Who needs Disneyland!! Excellently filmed and every word made sense i am very much of the same thinking . Thank you for making this beautiful film. All the best Johnny
Hello my outdoors friend, sincere thanks to you for sharing this beautifully filmed video. There are few things more wonderful than sharing the beauty of God's creation with your family. Take care out there, be safe and always have good fun. 🤗

Thanks. That's the benefit of using your own family as the subject.
Awesome! " I can see and hear my maker, the creator of both Heaven and Earth." That sums it up like nothing else. Wonderful narration.

Thanks Brad. The script was very difficult for me to write - I'm primarily a visual artist!

I live in England and I would love to visit Killarney Provincial Park but I don't know how to get there via plane from Gatwick. Do you know any airports near that all? I could do the rest from there.

Thanks Joe. You're mighty ambitious. Killarney Provincial Park is a 4.5 hour drive north of Pearson International Airport (Toronto). Are you going to make it a solo trip?
Thank you very much for responding! I intend to go with a few mates from uni as part of a gap year and this place is very ideal! I appreciate the information, its very useful :)
