A great, often overlooked classic. And I will again recommend *The Valley of Gwangi,* if you want to see a dinosaur roping scene in place of a gorilla roping scene.
So this was Ray Harryhausen's first major project; where as first technician he did a huge chunk of the animation work. Earlier; not that long after the original King Kong debuted, Ray had begun a correspondence with Willis who would encourage the younger man in his own projects. In 1989 I was lucky to meet Ray at a science fiction convention in Philadelphia; where we actually got to chat privately for almost a half hour as fellow artists. You gotta love the tech arts; where upcoming creators can learn from seasoned veterans. As for Willis O'Brian, his last film was in 1957: The Black Scorpion, where Mexico City is threatened by the title critters.
This classic is so much better than the '98 remake IMO. About 85% of the stop animation work here was done by Ray Harryhausen - protégé, friend, and successor to Willis O'Brien. Harryhausen also inherited *"The Valley of Gwangii" (1969)* from O'Brien who died in '62. I highly recommend it. I also highly recommend all of Ray Harryhausen's other films.
Fantastic movie. One of my top 10 favorites of all time. Perhaps top 5. I've kept it on VHS, VCD, DVD, and digitally. Whatever medium comes next, it'll be on it. Thanks for reviewing it.
The original is so much better than the 1998 Remake.
