Tyla, the now Grammy nominated artist from Johannesburg South Africa, has been making a name for herself with her music, most of which she calls 'Popiano': a blend between Amapiano, R&B, and pop. While creating buzz with her singles Getting Late, Overdue, and Been Thinking, Tyla's also been enjoying the viral success of her song Water. Tyla hopes that with her music, she's able to breakout as one of music's best new acts, something she's said doesnt' happen all too often for people where she comes from.

And she’s Grammy nominated, all before her first album. A South African star in the making ✨.
cute but work with trash Chris brown ew
As a South African🇿🇦 this is so cool to see. Thank you Naomi for highlighting Tyla but also mentioning South African music genres like Amapiano, Gqom & Kwaito. Your references to musicians like Kabza De Small, Maphorisa, Babes Wodumo, Young Stunna is important because they are icons in South Africa!
Amapiano & South African to the world! 🌎
This makes me so happy to hear. I truly enjoyed learning more about South African music yall really got it going on over there 🫶🏾
we love you girl😍@@naomi.cannibal
@@naomi.cannibal well researched and presented, amapiano got popular in SA 2018-19, nothing bring me joy to see where it is now ❤
Agree this was nicely researched and stayed top line but just enough. My oldest cousin often says it’s all on the back of Kwaito and amapansula culture pioneers.Without Kwaito there wouldn’t have been Mzansi house, Gqom, SA hip hop, amapiano etc
So it’s amapiano sound or popiano sound she is making?
I love that this video didn't just focus on Tyla's story but you also took time to learn about South African music and highlighted other iconic South African artists 🥹
She really did her research, thorough and proper. 10/10
Tyla's water was top ten in Japan and also doing well in brazil
Tyla is truly making us proud🇿🇦❤️ we love to see it and it’s about time, she’s beeeen killing it🤌🏾
As a Black American whose been vibing with her since getting late! I am so happy to see her growing and thriving and can’t wait to see what she does next!❤️
She will be touring in March!!! Make sure you get a ticket
@@pump1180already got them!❤️
I like to see female African pop artists beening embraced internationally
As a South African I'm very impressed Naomi, you did your research wow.🔥🔥
I can't stand the comments of "she's the new Rihanna" No! She's the new Tyla she got her own style and sound!
more then proud of tyla, she's a true definition of a South African pop star🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Happy for her, she is reppin and making South Africans proud
She has a lot of potential, intrigued to see how her musical journey progresses! Also her outfits are always 🔥
her success makes me so emotional, just as the mainstream success of my west african sistren makes me soo emotional. AFRICANS STAND UP!!!!!!!!!!!! our culture, our music, our diverse beauty, our fashion, our work ethic has BEEN the blueprint.
That’s how we feel as coloured people. Very proud of our girl. ❤️
I know Tyla has collaborated with Arya, can’t wait for her to collaborate with Tems, she’s literally the only Nigerian artist I love and listen to. She’s mad talented and special
@@KYRA_FX. She should behave colored and not copy blvck culture. They need to find their own sound/ style/ hairstyles etc. not copy blvck culture when it suits them and then call themselves ‘coloured’. Find your own stuff and stop copying 😂😴🚮
I think what makes Tyla special is the fact she can blend a very new sound into pop and rnb. Also the fact she can really sing. Water is such captivating song because it has a choir aspect to it with the vocal layering which is common in afrobeat. But it makes it spiritual in a way that its low-key a gospel song lol.
Tyla’s sound is specifically amapiano mixed with pop, has nothing to do with afrobeats. Amapiano is South African created and still growing here and afrobeats in west African and South Africans don’t do afrobeats
@@thandisilec835 The choral aspect of the background vocals is very much a thing in afrobeats, especially the way that it layered.
Specifically the production is Amapiano.
She knows how's to blend Amapiano with other genres ✨ to clarify
@@craishon but her sound is Amapiano and she specifically has told us this in interviews that she does a sub-sect of Amapiano and she calls it PopPiano,so she does not do Afrobeats is my point as she’s mostly surrounded by Amapiano from her country. she’s just added pop sound to it to make it even more relatable for the global audience…
@@thandisilec835 again I'm talking about the vocal layering of the song. Water.... The way the chorus is layered in the song is very much common in afrobeats where you hear a SATB
Examples: Libianca - People
Burna Boy - Last Last
@@craishon stop trying to claim Tyla who’s South African and has told you her genre is Amapiano derivative and it very much sounds like it. There’s noAfrobeats in her sound, South African artists don’t do Afrobeats, simple but Nigerians sure have started doing Amapiano
I’m so happy that more and more Africans are getting more global success. I definitely think Tyla is here to stay considering she’s already gonna drop an album right after the success of Water. You can tell she has so much pride and joy in her music and I really hope we see more artists like her gain more traction.
my girl did her research & and the accuracy is a 10/10 .😂❤❤❤
As a South African living in Cape Town I've been watching and supporting your channel for years now and enjoying ever single one of them I've always wanted you to make a video about either Amapiano or a South African singer because we are now making noise all around the world especially in America thank you so much for making this video love you Naomi please come to my country someday South Africa to the world Africa to the world🇿🇦🤩
I'm not exaggerating when I say Water is THE song of 2023 (and one of the best songs I've heard). Idk how to describe it but when I first heard it, it's like I got an instant crush. Tyla's soothing vocals, the soft lyrics, and the instrumental are so captivating in a romantic way. Every time the explosion hits after "Set off my whole body", it gives me goosebumps. Such a well-written and breathtaking masterpiece.
I didn't realize the song has amapiano influence. I'm still discovering the genre and my favorite from it is Fatela by Aymos & Ami Faku (also a beautiful song).
Oooooooh i love Aymos he makes great loves & heartbreak Amapiano
One way to spot amapiano is the iconic log drum. That's how you know it's proper MZANSI
No Fr i immediately had to look it up
As a South African Zulu viewer I'm happy to see a part of my culture spoken about❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm South African and i think your pronunciation was spot on 👍
Thank you, I appreciate it!
As a coloured South African, she makes me so proud 💕
And seeing how proud our whole country is in this comment section makes me so happy 😭😭💕
Who cares that she’s coloured? What is coloured? She’s trying to get to mainstream western markets. No such thing as coloured over there. If that’s what she wants to promote she should stay in South Africa.
grammy nominated already is craaaazy
No fr, after only a few years in it
Omg an ajanugu and Naomi cannibal interaction??😱😱
fun fact, BTS also used gqom in their song idol. You'll hear it clearly at the beginning of the song. I think that's why they do the gwara gwara at the chorus because the gwara gwara is also associated with gqom.
THANK YOU ive been FIGHTING people who keep denying this
Ahhh now that I know what it is I can hear it!
Thank you for getting your research right. You're really helping with the exposure for the South African sound. We will never forget Swae Lee and his ignorance, saying it belongs to Nigeria
Ao bandla 😂😂😂
I LOVE that more African artists are getting attention ! So so proud 🥺🥺!!!
5:39: Fun Fact: DJ Lag is a South African Gqom producer and originator of the aforementioned genre and happens to be the man behind in infectious and anthem sound of Beyoncé’s MY POWER which happens to be a Gqom song as well. The song features Nija, Tierra Whack, Yemi Alade and fellow South Africans Busiswa and Moonchild Sanelly.
Been Thinking is one of the best songs of the year, it’s wilddd to see her blow up already as she should
I love how she did therall research! She said everything correctly! I'm a south African BTW and I feel honored 🇿🇦❤
Amapiano are not necessarily Afrobeats inspired, but it came from a South African old school dance genre, Kwaito which is why they both tend to be slow because they are inspired from "slowed down house music" from the UK and American Hip-Hop, Jazz and Disco.
I didn't knew who she was but now i'm gonna listen to her music. She has good inspirations. Aaliyah is one of my favorite artists too.
Your work here is really amazing. Thanks for the vídeo. 💜
Thank you!! I only knew about Water but was excited to discover some new genres!!
im a viewe from South Africa, thank you for covering Tyla, and you did a great and went into intricate detail on the culture, i appreciate the effort 🥰
I just want to say thank you for mentioning that Tyla doesn’t identify as Black. A lot of people are trying to push her racial identity as just Black, but she’s a mixture of African, South East Asian, and White. Just because she “looks Black or half Black” doesn’t mean that’s her racial identity. I thought people would know this, especially in the U.S.A., but here we are. That being said, I like ‘Water’ a lot. Can’t wait for her debut album😅💯
Yeah I saw what she was doing
She's colored.
She's what we call coloured. Trevor Noah has explained that coloured people are their own community. Not necessarily because they're part black and part white. Tyla is coloured but Trevor isn't. Make sense?
@@basetsanam1876Trevor is biracial and genetically speaking would have more black or white in him than Tyla, her genealogy is a mixture of different things and seems she has a distant Zulu ancestor
It's not about Tyla not identifying as black but that she has a strong identity already as a colored, a South African, and African. She is undeniably all these things that don't need to be further elaborated.
You don't miss . Loved watching this . Love it for our girl Tyla too 🇿🇦🐅
1. I acknowledge that you admit you don't know IsiZulu, I'll give you grace
2. I've been following Tyla since 2021 with "Getting Late" and i knew she's gonna go far.
3. For her, to be recognised globally is actually a big deal and I can't wait for me to see whats next for Tyla. "Water" is opening doors for her❤
3. Vocally, she does sound like Ariana Grande and Doja Cat
There is a shift of more happier music hopefully a pop reggae rivival too.
I’ve noticed that too, I feel like I’m coming across a lot more music that’s vibrant and maximalist again
South Africans getting their flowers!! Here for it. Thank you Niaomi!! 🫵🏾❤️
"been thinking" is such a good song from her! 🔥 I hope it grows!
saw her live in paris and if she releases enough new things shell have a strong fanbase in no tiem she got the star aura
i feel with her, so many artists are gonna have to step up their game now. tyla is bringing this energy that the industry lacked for soooo long. i hope more artists will continue to do the same. i'm really excited for her. i already know she's going to make a major impact in music
She just got nominated for a Grammy so proud !
Ngl, as a South African I can't stand Amapiano but "Getting Late" is a song I don't mind listening to
Tyla is making us so proud 🇿🇦🇿🇦❤❤
Lol I'm tired of amapiano too but I'm curious about your reason(s) for disliking it
Private school piano 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
@@nafisa2970I feel like it's being overplayed, when it was "the hot topic" I liked it, but now it's not my thing
@@aduraedosatoo good
I hope she’s not a one hit wonder.
she’s now Grammy nominated so proud
Can you please do a breakdown on Kamo Mphela too, shes another South African amapiano artist whos killing it as well in the game currently.
Ooooh I'm here for South Africanisms 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦 thank you for the awesome video!!!
Stem majors who act/sing 🤝 acting/singing/influencing
When people compare tyla to Arianna I think it's because of her appearance, rather than her vocals
I had to come and see your always awesome video on our home girl Tyla❤️🇿🇦 you’re always gorgeous and spot on🫶🏽✨
I really want this girl to go as mainstream as possible. Loveee to see artist from countries other than usa and uk thrive
been thinking is such a good song - I hope it blows up after water!
Folks mainly pop music fans love trashing this era of music mainly bc it’s the same as the early 2010s but I much prefer this era bc many artists from niche/underground genres are able to achieve massive success and recognition without the need to dumb down their original sound or cater to a American/western audience. If artists like tyla, bad bunny, Rosalia, Megan thee stallion, flo, and even Billie eilish came out in 2012 as suppose to today they would have change the unique qualities that makes them artists bc making generic EDM pop music was the standard to crossover or they stayed exclusively to their niche market and not get the chance to crossover im here for it, embrace diversity, originality and individuality among niche/underground/international artists coming up, i can’t wait to see what tyla does next
No one can touch the 90s and entire early 2000 girls. Gen Z is trying to replicate but very few can do it. Only Tyla has sort of come close. Style and performance wise
Tyla’s water is on the road to outstream Jerusalem to become most streamed South African song.
Ahhhh Jerusalem has 500 million views, even trending pop songs don't get views like that, but maybe you'll never know
@@mazvitaselemani pop songs don’t get views like that??? Are you joking?? Go and look at the songs with over a billion of views
Naomi you nailed it🫶🏾🇿🇦
I hope she becomes bigger!
It’s INSANE how the song was able to rise with tiktok vitality. Tiktok can not be under estimated as a tool for musical success nowadays !
You are truly the best when it comes to music analysis. I am South African myself and still learn a few things. You continue to surprise me
this was such a good video on her!! i've been getting into her discography since she blew up on TikTok, so happy to see her dreams becoming reality
i saw an advert with tyla new single and all that caught my eye was how beautiful she was but she deserves the recognition she is getting recently and i can see the rihanna influence. so excited to see where she is headed.

I would love to see you interviewing artist on the red carpet it would actually be so interesting, engaging and pleasant
Feels so long ago since someone fresh came along who deserves the hype and attention! Love her sound. She's a global superstar for sure
No Afrobeast from West Africa ever influenced Amapiano. Amapiano is from House music, and the original slowed house music in SA was Kwaito, which is a genre originating from South African townships, itself from house music from the U.S mainly Chicago Warehouse Club, which is where the name 'house' comes from. We are very protective of our sound and its origins.
Thanks for this video, perfect timing to get to know her more
Water is damn vibe ❤
this was a great video - thank you for the respect you showed regarding her heritage ❤
I love her African Mad Max style
Really great research Naomi, much love from Southa 🇿🇦❤
