I think my parents painted their kitchen the same color. I had one of those globe lights at the top of the stairs in the old house. That house had the same type of walls..... those strips are called "rock lath".
In-ceiling radiant electric was all the rage in the late 60s and 70s; it proved to be burdensome as repairs required destroying drywall, and many of these were simply abandoned in-place.

My grandfather's old split level house had in-ceiling electric heat, so it caused the plaster finish to crack after a while.

@bbishoppcm Yes, that was often the case. My grandfather typically used his fireplaces for warmth, being a little cheaper to run anyway.
