I kept seeing that specific airship fly by the neighborhood I was working at by highway 67. I was amazed of the beauty of the plane and I vividly remember the red pain on the plane and the turret on the tail area. It’s so sad that it crashed because it was my favorite plane of all the ones I saw fly by today.

The smaller colliding plane - the ghost-like silver plane (a Bell P-63 Kingcobra) that comes in from the left rear quarter and collides with the bigger dark four-engined vintage Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress - has virtually no visibility downward and forward; while in its highly-banked, steep turn this means the P-63 pilot could not see in the precise direction that the B-17 lay and was coming from. Subject to a subsequent determination that the P-63 suffered a mechanical failure or its pilot suffered an in-air stroke or became otherwise incapacitated in some way (unlikely events given the degree of controlled flight exhibited by the P-63), in my opinion the pilot should've paid more heed to the downward-and-forward visibility issue and planned his course better to keep himself clear of the B-17. The P-63 had no business performing such a turning maneuver in close proximity to other aircraft, especially when such other aircraft were in a spot the P-63 pilot could've anticipated them being in; very poor, irresponsible, arrogant pilotage by the P-63 pilot i.e. pilot error.
Another key question needing an answer is: why were these two aircraft operating at the same altitude in such close proximity to each other? Didn't an airshow plan have them keep to separate altitudes?
But don't mind me - we'll have to read the final NTSB report on this incident in about a year to know the definitive most-likely explanation. But it is extremely unlikely that the P-63 pilot will not be found to be a primary culprit in this incident, with the other significant share of blame belonging to the CAF itself for its poor flight plan for, and control of, this air show.
The B-17 pilot is blameless in this incident but there is no way, I'm sorry to say, any of the four to five B-17 crewman survived this collision, nor could the P-63 pilot have either.
This is the best, most informative footage of this incident I have seen so far.
Way sucks all the way 'round.

What I first thought of when I saw the video footage of the collision and crash to the ground was that the pilot may have suicided it. My theory about this accident is, P-63 pilot lost sight the B-17 for a few seconds, i think because P-63 was flying a little higher in altitude than bomber, that was just a blink but was enough to become a tragedy, two historical airplanes lost but mainly 2 or 3 great and experience pilots have been lost today too. Only a miracle could have saved the pilots. All our condolences and prays to them from Mexico.

So, are we finally at a point where we can all agree that *air shows* are worthless and dangerous? I have no idea how anyone can justify the risk of these things anymore.

You do not need to come out saying that we should stop these airshows, mishaps happen all the time people were there to admire the fine warbirds from the past and inspiring children but it took a turn for the worst we should not ban stuff like this things happen we need to accept and move on

It’s military propaganda, pure and simple. It’s not heroic, it’s not glorious- it is meant solely to justify war and indoctrinate people with the idea that war is normal and OK. Reliving and glorifying war is a sick fetish.

This B-17 was parked for several years during the 1980s at the airport where I learned to fly.
It had suffered a terrible landing mishap at this airport and was nearly a total loss.
Only through the extreme dedication of volunteer mechanics was it able to fly again.
It took them YEARS of work just to repair the worst of the damage to get the plane to the point that it could be ferried to another airport where the rest of the repairs could be done.
This plane was outside on the ramp the entire time. There was no hangar on the airport large enough to accommodate it.
The volunteers worked in the heat, rain, snow, ice, and bitter cold until their job was done.
I doubt that any of the volunteers are still living. I’d hate for them to see what became of the airplane and the death toll from the crash. 😢

The fighter pilot didn't feel a thing.
The bomber crew had one second.

The air boss should be held criminally accountable.

Terrible accident but let’s be honest it was pretty quick must have been less than 3 seconds before the b17 hit the deck. That being said it was enough time for people to realise things went south fast. Such a shame
