This episode reminds me so much of how most among us games go. You can’t trust anyone, anyone could be a threat, and there is always someone who almost gets the imposter but falls short (rip commissar).
This does amazing things for the lore. The genestealer family and other cultist are running away. Not accepting the death and consumption by "this" Hive. Is this a hidden start to a faction war between Hives or is their more autonomy and depth in the Tyranids and Cultist.

I love the insidiousness of the Genestrealer cults. I feel they're more dangerous than chaos cults. When I saw the Lictor pause for a moment, then skitter away, that made me pause and consider what was going on.When the guardsman set off the concealed explosive, that immediately told me we were dealing with Genestealers and this was a planet in a full uprising. Comments for the Comment God and likes for his throne!
Also implies that the genestealer that we briefly see intentionally didn't pursue them and was actually defending them so they could get to the shuttle. It being the "family" that is mentioned at the start of the episode.
This episode beautifully illustrates why the Imperium must be so ruthless and brutal to its own citizenry - in a universe where threats like Chaos and Tyranids exist, there's precious little room for compassion.
Precious little room, aye. Especially convenient as an excuse for omnicidal maniacs like too many amongst the Inquisition. Besides, the Salamanders, the Lamenters, the Ultramarines, the Raven Guards, the Imperial Fists, the Crimson Fists, the Space Wolves, amongst others, will vastly differ from that mostly-Inquisitorial stance on the matter of compassion.
That was my thought exactly, the truly sad part is that the empire would collapse almost immediately if they truly cared about human life, you have to be as ruthless as other factions. The absolute grimdark.
I mean it really doesn't, this isn't any more brutal than a real life military in a life or death situation, this isn't the "imperium's brutality", the imperium's brutality is when they do this kind of shit when there isn't any danger and the planet isn't in danger of invasion etc
that's a bad excuse, especially considering that in the end, it's the favoritism toward upper classes like priests that will bring the doom of another planet. The couple got onboard through scheme and falsification, not by abusing the compassion of a poor soul.
So seeing the baby looking human was just an audience/ family perspective ? Or is there some genestealer trickery that can hide their real apperance from strangers ?
Genestealer infection process states that it alters the mind and causes the host and subsequent offspring to view the Tyranids as their kin. They will do anything to protect and serve them.
I mean if you are familiar with the geneastealer artwork, is pretty easy to look at some of the civilians show on screen a say for sure they were geneastealer and by the end when they find the comminssar it becomes something obvious
But wonderfull episode my second favourite, because chapter 9 with the final scene with trazyn for me was the best, and it followed a similar dynamic to this episode (we are presented with a group that will be the protagonist, the chaos terminators/the family the we aee introduced to an objective clear to the protagonist that they must persue eladar artifact/the ship to escape, and at the end there is a twist with a concept or character that wasn't openlly showed in the rest of the episode trazyn/geneastealer explaining some details through the episode that seem ackward, things changing out of nothing/the behavior of the family and other characters as well as the tyranids
The second I saw the officer close the door and then pull out a detonator told me he was a traitor or infected, why would an officer sabotage other transports in a Tyranid invasion as a "distraction" unless it was to serve a "greater good"
Even the letting randos in airport is was a bit sus. It could be seen as compassion but in situation as dire as that opening the gate for someone without papers would easily cause a rampage.
@@yetipotato8567 well no, the family mentioned having a family member who would take care of their transport and documents so that part wasn't as sus. I just though he was a brother of either mama cultist or daddy cultist. Not entirely suspicious
My issue with seeing lasgun in most of these things is that they are potrayed as blasters like starwars. When really they are beam weapons, same thing with Las Cannons which are just bigger beam weapons that connect the target and the cannon with a line of light. The ammo clip isn't filled with shells or actual ammo, its supposed to be a power pack that's it. Thus a las gun wouldn't be able to technically jam. A faulty wiring or a need of a quick on off switch on the rifle would make sense. The game Darktide actually has that feature slightly in, where when you use a lasgun it shows the gunner flicking a switch on prior to the rifle being able to fire.
Genestealers instinctivly flee the hive mind after a certian point, usualy once the invasion has truly begun, this ensures they cpntinue to spread aboard fleeing ships.
Erm, not really, I am certain it's just like how we players have control groups for different armies. Control group 1 ground armies and have them rush in. Control group 2 air armies and have them rush in. Control group 3 heavy ground armies and have them rush in. Spend the most of the time micro-managing Control group 4 with that genestealer families.
Bloody genestealers, I managed to put it together in the beginning of the episode when I watched it, this just compounds the utter horror, and existential threat the genestealer cults are in M41, they could be anywhere, anyone, and emperor forbid if you find them and they catch you. I find it funny that I cut my hair very similarly to yours, beard and all.
I watched the video again and the episode has so many details it is amazing, also they are in Ultramar, look up the the genestealer cult symbol of Behemoid Undercult, it is the EXACT same symbol that shows up on the wall when the sister moves the hatch so they can escape.
So does that mean the potential reemergance of Ultramarines might come next, striking back at the Hive Fleet? Given their long time history of being one of the leading combatants against the Tyranid threats..
@@jakobericsson1663 Who knows but theres one member of the tyranids that is specific to hive fleet behemoth which is old one eye and it does have a long history with the ultramarines, so it could be man, the series has gotten better with each passing episode.

Exactly why paranoia in this universe is key once the scout ignored them I couldn’t tell whether they were unimportant or if they were already part of the cult

We need more stuff like this, that shows the Nitty gritty life on imperial worlds especially during civil unrest and invasions or attacks, the dichotomy is astounding..
It was a pretty clever redo of a interesting perspective, the fact that the only straight shot we had of the baby was from a POV 1:55 (Untill the end) was a dead ringer for GSC. The cult lore is usually the best when it highlights how they take advantage of the humanity of their victims
As soon as you mentioned there was a twist I immediately thought the family were infected by Genestealers. Especially with the Tyranid invasion already occurring at that point.
when the husband say as the start that he know an unvasion is coming and that he know it "from family" , i just understant what this "family" is. Just as when the mother is saying "we'll be protected" to this news she refer to the tyranids that won't kill them, but since it would certainly be the case they need to flee the planet. Or even the great mother saying "i knew this dat would come", since she us certainly from the first generation of cultist and so awara that an invasion would come. This episode was really so good and full of details that you understand only at the end, everything the family said make sense with them being cultist.
Just wow. Excellent explaining thanks 😍👍 your definitely my favourite discussing these videos. Im going to watch it again missed afew things you mentioned. I subbed to Warhammer TV because of you. What a gem 💎
18:22 Dude... The Commissar is not a Jerk, he is literally doing his job in an extremely preassured state of mind and situation, and hes trying to save humanity as a whole. He has a much higher education in different types of threats and know that evils like Genestealer Cults can be absolutely anywhere and is being able to see the bigger picture. If he would have been successful this story would have had a less dark ending.
ya know you start to understand how some humans turn traitor or turn to the Tau, you want to be a loyalist but when your empire has such disregard for you safety and life...

the only thing I think they should add are hybrid if you know the lore you see this coming... but if you don't they should add some of the hybrid in the background with three arms to make feel something is wrong
A terrifying truth. That's why it's better to focus on the battles... and see all the bad stuff that happens to everybody as a form of cosmic justice, since everyone's evil.
Wow GW isn't just paying it's animators in scraps and pocket lint this time! Hammer & Bolter always had medium to fantastic writing (this ep being a great example), but the animation quality was never this decent. I think they hit their stride by not doing too much action like in Cadia Stands and sticking to smaller, darker scenes like with the family huddled together to hide frames dropping or animation errors. As well as fulfilling the actual grimdark component of the setting. More talking scenes in dimly lit rooms, then short bursts of action, then back into dim lighting again. Story justifies the art direction really well, and it's just so refreshing to see the animators really seem like they're hitting their stride. ESPECIALLY compared to episode 1 *shutters*.
Ngl I knew the twist 100% about halfway through, but when it's confirmed it just feels so satisfying to have known. This is REALLY good world building in this episode.
I suspected the sergeant was a Genestealer or separatist when he blew up the port, but the ending really caught me by surprise. I just thought he was trying to sew chaos, and the family would benefit from it incidentally.
What a twist that sticks a dagger into your lower abdomen, your compassion would doom you and the very next planet the ship landed on. Showing you your human nature would not last longer than a week in the Warhammer Universe and would likely get others killed as well. This kind of story shows how a planet like Krieg can yield so many top quality soldiers, because of how this planet meets its end, they know how genestealers can destroy an entire planet. Krieg soldiers have accepted their tiny place in the cruel cold blooded universe and they will fight for the survival of the Human Race and it's place in it. Now I'm going to have to watch this series! Thanks for sharing, I'm a noob to the Warhammer universe but I do enjoy the stories from it.
11:02 That shouldn't be possible since lasguns don't jam. What I think happened was his lasgun's machine spirit didn't like shooting subjects of The Emporer.
This is why as soon as you see a sizeable genestealer invasion you just hit the planet with the exterminatus button. You kill the genestealers and destroy alot of biomass the hive fleet would absorb. Im guessing its easier to rebuild after orbital bombardment then trying to rebuild after the tyranids take everything
This is such a good episode!!! I love GSC as an army and narratively, only second to necrons, I agree that it’s the best hammer and bolted episode so far
Hey brother, I appreciate the great commentary, you are helping me out so much in understanding the lore of warhammer. I read and love the books, but you explanation is fantastic and entertaining. Keep it up!
As soon as they said about an invasion near the start i thougt Nids. Then seeing the green goggles guy in the crowd i knew GSC. Thought the sister would be part of the cult but didnt expect the family. The gaurd who blows up the ships planned that too. In Day of Ascension the genestealers are allowed to leave in small numbers to start the process in another olanet. Reminds me of I am Legend where the 'bad guys' are monstrous to us but look like angels to each other
It was actually good - the Warhammer + content seems to be getting better and better. I figured the twist, honestly - the very second Hive Ship was shown looming above. But it was a good twist for those less knowledgeable about the setting. There are still hints here and there, even without visible Tyranid crests and symbols. The family all have a cult-like mentality, repeating new-life shtick like mantra, almost. During their escape, you see the Lictor ignoring them completely, and a Genestealer in the tunnels is a dead giveaway. No civilian from the last checkpoint stopped them or tried to barge in that way - it was clear they were cult's distraction to get a new genestealer, perhaps a growing Patriarch off the planet. The rigged landing pads, another giveaway. Sarge had no real, loyal reason to do it. And final giveaway - you'd expect all the priests to be repulsed by plebs entering their transport, would you not? But they not bad an eye - and soon, it is revealed why. And it also perfectly illustrates what kind of horror does the Imperium face - why mercy is a weakness leading to only ever greater tragedy. Now - one thing to note - why did we see baby as human baby first and Genestealer in the end? Those bloody things mask themselves psionically - their parents view them as human, those around them as well. Human parents of the first hybrids completely ignore abnormalities of their offspring after infection. And early hybrids are often so human-like it can be argued if they are actually fully aware of themselves not being humans at first, if their abnormal behaviour is not just regulated by some psychic switch. And it also shows well that Tyranids are far more than just a ravenous animal. There is a grim, horrible intellect behind this. A genestealer cult infiltrates the planet, sometimes decades before invasion. It gets to every layer of the society, because genestealers are actually incredibly intelligent, they understand how their prey works, and are independent enough that cult genestealers suffer from certain duality - they are known to fight the invading Hive Fleets even for their own survival. Still though - uprising of the cult happens at the wake of the invasion. So the Fleet doesn't lose its resources, and it weakens the defenders. It is like spider's venom, digesting the besieged planet from the inside.
I completly agree dude. this was an awesome episode. the purestrain at the end was a jaw dropping development. cant wait to see what hammer and bolter puts out next

I figured the same thing watching this. All the stories I heard I figured the tyranids let that ship through too easily but agree with others didn't expect the ship to be infested either.
Love this series and can't wait for more
but if they were genestealers, why would the tyrannids attack them and kill the sister?
This episode reminds me so much of how most among us games go. You can’t trust anyone, anyone could be a threat, and there is always someone who almost gets the imposter but falls short (rip commissar).

This does amazing things for the lore. The genestealer family and other cultist are running away. Not accepting the death and consumption by "this" Hive. Is this a hidden start to a faction war between Hives or is their more autonomy and depth in the Tyranids and Cultist.
There’s so many details that make the world richer and I love it
I thought being a genestealer complitely subjects ones mind to its hivemind.

That ruthlessness and brutality is the cause of most of their problems, though I'm all for it, because it means more power For the Ruinous Powers!!!

It's the family perspective, hybrids see their purestrain babies as cutie-pies, not horrific abominations they are.
Little bit of both.
Would be fun if a blank would visit such a family. They should loose the all hive minde influence and see the baby as it is
Genestealer infection process states that it alters the mind and causes the host and subsequent offspring to view the Tyranids as their kin. They will do anything to protect and serve them.
Near total Neural rewrite
I saw the twist coming from a mile away.
But it was very well brought even while knowing the lore.
Very solid episode.
Same here
i knew there was going to be something, but i didn't expect that twist, the righting in this episode was absolutely superb.
I didn't, because I didn't think GSC would want to leave a planet undergoing Hive Fleet invasion.
Not sure if I like this or plague song more. Both really showcase the quality of story telling the 40k universe is capable of producing.
Sees Tyranids: KILL WITH FIRE!!!!
Sees baby after Tyranid: KILL WITH FIRE!!!!!
Sees normal humans:KILL WITH FIRE"!!!!!
The game Darktide actually has that feature slightly in, where when you use a lasgun it shows the gunner flicking a switch on prior to the rifle being able to fire.
the fact each tryanid is a hive mind being controlled by a singular entity and they’re all doing different things is unfathomable.
I think Genestealer are semi-independent
Genestealers instinctivly flee the hive mind after a certian point, usualy once the invasion has truly begun, this ensures they cpntinue to spread aboard fleeing ships.
@@apolloknight9521 they can like signal the fleet, each fleet has its own hive mind iirc

Control group 1 ground armies and have them rush in.
Control group 2 air armies and have them rush in.
Control group 3 heavy ground armies and have them rush in.
Spend the most of the time micro-managing Control group 4 with that genestealer families.
This is probably the closest I will ever get to watching the episodes so thanks
The story is good, it tells about the hive citizen during "Filthy Xenos" invasion.

My favorite was the Adeptus Mechanicus episode where the tech priest had a Kastelan Robot. This episode tho with the Tyranids Chef Kiss it was great.
I love how it all comes together to show you why all those nids that could have killed them didn't. Like going through the underground passages of a hive city during a Tyranid invasion sounds like suicide lol.

The quality of hammer and bolter is drastically better in regards to the animations than previously. So glad these newer eps have more time to cook in the oven.
I wanna see some Necromunda animations. Seeing Goliaths fighting an Escher gang would be badass

Weirdly enough, when they put a little more budget into animation, it embellishes the story too ~
What made this Episode a real treat was the music playing in the Background, "Runar" is a really good track for backing Up such analysis and topic.
Not only is the show smashing it out the park, so are your breakdowns dude, been watching since the first one, they just keep getting better, keep it up.
We need more stuff like this, that shows the Nitty gritty life on imperial worlds especially during civil unrest and invasions or attacks, the dichotomy is astounding..

Scottish genestealers lol.I'm Scottish and I approve of this episode.
Reminds me of that Monty Phyton episode, where aliens turn people into scottsman.

Scotland and tyranids are one and the same.
It was a pretty clever redo of a interesting perspective, the fact that the only straight shot we had of the baby was from a POV 1:55 (Untill the end) was a dead ringer for GSC. The cult lore is usually the best when it highlights how they take advantage of the humanity of their victims
My favorite episode so far, this has set in stone for making my own Genestealer Cult army.
As soon as you mentioned there was a twist I immediately thought the family were infected by Genestealers. Especially with the Tyranid invasion already occurring at that point.
By the way, the baby genestealer is quite adorable.

when the husband say as the start that he know an unvasion is coming and that he know it "from family" , i just understant what this "family" is.
Its interesting how I didnt think they were genestealers even after the wife asks "How do you know?" and the husband answers "from family"
ya know you start to understand how some humans turn traitor or turn to the Tau, you want to be a loyalist but when your empire has such disregard for you safety and life...
SPORTS is an acronym to remind you of steps to take to clear a weapons malfunction. It stands for Slap, Pull, Observe, Release, Tap and Shoot. SPORTS - What To Do In A Jam
One of the common tasks for Soldiers taught in Basic Training’s Basic Rifle Marksmanship is how to clear a malfunction on the M16-series of rifles. Although the task was laid out in 1968’s comicbook-style DA PAM 750-30, it was still a lot of steps.
What a great example of how warp reality can get in 40K
the only thing I think they should add are hybrid if you know the lore you see this coming... but if you don't they should add some of the hybrid in the background with three arms to make feel something is wrong
Warhammer where the cruel choice is always correct.
Amazing break down, your editing is way better than before and you make this episode great 👍
Ngl I knew the twist 100% about halfway through, but when it's confirmed it just feels so satisfying to have known. This is REALLY good world building in this episode.
I suspected the sergeant was a Genestealer or separatist when he blew up the port, but the ending really caught me by surprise. I just thought he was trying to sew chaos, and the family would benefit from it incidentally.
You mean the lieutenant... Nathaniel is a lieutenant
i really like how analytical this breakdown was.
Adorably tiny Tyranid
17:51 just wanted to say thats not a hive tyrant, thats a harpy
This series started out average but is getting soooo good.
11:02 That shouldn't be possible since lasguns don't jam. What I think happened was his lasgun's machine spirit didn't like shooting subjects of The Emporer.
An improperly seated magazine/shaped magazine could have disrupted the connection
And that was the machine spirit mistake..they are not subject of the god emperor...not anymore
This is why as soon as you see a sizeable genestealer invasion you just hit the planet with the exterminatus button. You kill the genestealers and destroy alot of biomass the hive fleet would absorb. Im guessing its easier to rebuild after orbital bombardment then trying to rebuild after the tyranids take everything
thank you for the amazing reaction and thank you for showcasing us the 13th episode of the hammer and bolter
This is such a good episode!!! I love GSC as an army and narratively, only second to necrons, I agree that it’s the best hammer and bolted episode so far
Not going to lie the use of runar as the background music really really does well for this video!!
When they said their escape had been cleared by 'family', I was like oh, OOOOOOOHHH...
Being a genestealer cultist collecter myself, I really like this twist.
Ok I did NOT expect that but I DID think it was far too easy, no WAY you leave a planet in one piece once you see the Tyranid fleet in the sky lol
Omg that twist! Wow 🤯
It was heartbreaking seeing them use the heavy bolter on their own citizens 😢
Hey brother, I appreciate the great commentary, you are helping me out so much in understanding the lore of warhammer. I read and love the books, but you explanation is fantastic and entertaining. Keep it up!
Thank you kindly sincerely appreciated!
That twist got me by surprise, godamn.
Reminds me of I am Legend where the 'bad guys' are monstrous to us but look like angels to each other
Stories from the perspective of genestealer cults show that they are actually probably the most loving and kind-hearted faction in 40K.
Until they slaughter the normie humans sure

Thanks for randomly popping up in my recommendations. Viewed all the episodes in one sitting.
And this is why we don't doubt the Commissar because he is always RIGHT when something is wrong!
There was one mistake from the imperium on this:
they let some people leave
nobody should have
I completly agree dude. this was an awesome episode. the purestrain at the end was a jaw dropping development. cant wait to see what hammer and bolter puts out next
