      Hello again, @Emile Well, it took over a year, but I did the video you were looking for, where we record MIDI and playback audio and then record the audio from the keyboard. You can find it here if you haven't already seen it: ruclips.net/video/V_FGQ83xH0Q/видео.html

      Anyway to record keeping the Nord keyboard effects like delay or reverb on the Mac? I feel the Nord loses the effects once plugged into Mac

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Год назад

      @@juanzelayandia8282 Hmm, these are interesting results that you are getting. I'm not sure I'd be able to duplicate that exactly. If you are doing the audio recording from the Nord, the recording should capture everything it hears from the Nord, including any and all effects. Now, none of the effects settings are being captured in the MIDI per se, just the note data in this example. But when the MIDI plays the Nord back, the Nord will play as if you were playing the keys directly, which means that all the effects will be heard. Hopefully, I understand this correctly. If not, feel free to explain it another way or with more detail.

      @CalrissianSteele I hear what you are saying! Most creators expect people to already know a BUNCH of stuff when in reality, only a handful are prepared to take on advanced information about a topic. I think this is true for tech creators, music creators, and even some how-to videos. That must just be the nature of the beast. But this is especially true for folks brand new to the world of MIDI or making music with the help of a computer, etc. It's tough enough learning music, but then you add the music tech on top, and it can be a mighty big mountain to climb! 🌋

    Marc, "Can't see my head buried in hand, shaking side to side in disbelief," but I feel so duped! I'm retired from stage, drummer-vocalist, and never was the digital guru. After 10 year health departure, I return to "Home Studios Everywhere!" Everyone set me up with similar gear, multiple DAW programs, all have incompatible issues, and all I needed was gear and "Garage Band Free?" UFB..going bowling for some heads.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад +1

      @Journey Drum Bum Thanks for your comment and your observations! Well, although GarageBand is in fact free, the computer it runs on is not haha! But yes, GarageBand is a good tool to use at the beginning of the journey. You can play and record VST instruments as well as external audio. One of the bigest limitations however is the fact that it can't send MIDI signals out. That feature and hundreds more separate GarageBand from its big brother LogicPro made by the same company (Apple). I use both but find these days I'm using Logic Pro far more due to a more advanced features set. Some of the things I use Logic Pro for are:
      Recording external audio
      MIDI playback
      MIDI analysis and reverse engineering (making MIDI from audio)
      MIDI temp reverse engineering (Logic can identify the tempo of a song even as it changes)
      MIDI Time Clock Sync: (See my Chariots of Fire video here: ruclips.net/video/-_bJlgLlutU/видео.html
      Merged media (Logic virtual instruments used in conjunction with Nord keyboards)
      Virtual drummer
      So, most everything above is a Logic Pro only feature. And those professional DAWs everyone set you up with are likely to have a lot if not all of these advanced features too. Now, I'm not saying you need ANY of these advanced features to do basic recordings and composition, but when you're ready for it, you'll have the means to do it.
      Good luck on your music and welcome back! 🎼 🎹

      Which Computer? I'm still using Atari 8-Track..🤪Jk. I have Windows and Mac synced as close as can be. Since I have kit 🎤 to one PC running Presonus (Mics are Presonus), It's easier for me to run midi and even play keys with some backing tracks from behind kit onto Ableton through Mac. I just got a new MacBook 16" with the M1 and now feel there's plenty "Groupies" to power everything together on one system for live and final Mastering. This beast has yet to hit 48% CPU usage with a 16 Track mixer, 8i8o interface, and all slots hot either mics or instrument. Windows and Pro Tools kept dying on me about 40 minutes into a set when we'd just go off on 20 minute jam paying tribute to Stevie Ray, or Jimi, Randy Rhodes. CPU would climb to 83% I think mostly due to 2 keyboards and 3 guitars occupying 5 of the 8 on Scarlet interface. Which shouldn't? Since 3 L/I and 2 Midi, not like 8 mics drawing 48 ea. right? I have a lot to learn, and know by road rash, "Nothing is ever perfect, we'd die early from boredom!" But, Pro Tools having the industry reputation it has, shouldn't be limited by CPU or they need to move into Menlo Park and cozy up with the 2 God's of RAM!

    Dear Marc, I have a yamaha digital piano which got a type-b port. I ususally connect the piano with ipad pro(type-b to type-c) or with macbook air(type b to usb), therefore garageband could work with the piano. Now, if i buy an audio interface like focusrite 2i2, despite the analog port you introduced , is it good to connect piano with focusrite(type-b to usb)? which one is better and why? Thanks

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад

      Hi Jimmy! Thanks for your question. If I'm understanding you correctly, you're wondering if it is good to connect the piano to the Focusrite using the USB port versus the audio ports. If that's the case, then you would connect the piano to the audio inputs only to the Focusrite. The USB on the Focusrite is reserved for the computer (or the iPad) but not a keyboard. The 2i2 specifically doesn't have additional accommodations for MIDI. The Focusrite units are primarily meant to take in analog audio and convert that to digital audio for a computer. Now the bigger Focusrite models can do both where they can handle the analog audio as well as take in MIDI to/from a given keyboard. This makes it so that you can use the one interface to do both audio and MIDI (more convenient) and means only a single USB cable to the computer from the Focusrite in that case.
      So, in your case, you'll connect the piano audio cables to the Focusrite and you'll take your USB out from the piano into the computer to drive your MIDI in Garageband. Then you'll have an additional USB from the Focusrite to the computer as well. I think that is the ideal setup here. And keep in mind, you only need the USB from the piano to the computer if you want to drive MIDI. You don't need that if you just want to record the audio.
      There is one thing to mention with all this. Some keyboards/devices can output both MIDI as well as audio from their USB port which can be a source of confusion in this case. The Boss RC-505 looper for example sends audio out its USB port as an option. Not sure if your Yamaha can do that or not but I thought it was worth mentioning. If your keyboard can in fact output audio from its USB port, then you wouldn't need the Focusrite unit at all. You could record directly into GarageBand. Good luck! 🎹

    Your videos are very helpful! I have a Focusrite 2i2 and don't have the input ports on the backside like your Focusrite does. You mentioned at 4:08 that we could combine inputs 1 & 2 to have stereo L &R. Is there any way to have volume/pan control of stereo L & R separately in Logic? When I select the double circles for stereo in Logic, I don't seem to have separate control of left and right sides of the stereo track. Thank you for your help!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад

      @Corrie Dunn Once you have a combined stereo track like this, it may be difficult to edit each channel independently in some situations. Most effects in Logic work as stereo and I assume some allow you to adjust one channel or the other depending on the effect when you are working with a stereo track. If you're looking to work with panning and balance, I found an article here that can possibly help guide you and perhaps spur more ideas beyond what is mentioned here: whylogicprorules.com/true-stereo-panning/
      Another option you have is to create two tracks and set both to record at the same time. On track 1 record left mono and on track 2 record right mono. Doing a recording in this way allows you to have complete channel independence. But also note that you may now find that this technique works for some things well but for others cause more work for you. For example, if you want to bring down the volume of the keyboard track, you now have to adjust both tracks at the same time instead of the one track.
      Truth be told, I don't work with Logic enough to know which is better or what the pros do (record keyboards in a single stereo track or use two mono tracks panning each one to one side or the other). I tend to record keyboards on a single stereo track but my needs are also fairly simple in that respect.
      Good luck and report back if you find something interesting you want to share on this topic pls. Thanks!

    Hi, thank you for this amazing video tutorial. I’m starting right now with my new A1 and a focusrite 8i6.
    I need some tip about the output volume of the A1 because i think is to low when i record and is setted on the max level… 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 года назад

      Hello Dylan - thanks for your comment and question. First, try connecting your L and R out from the Nord to the front of the Focusrite and you should see a big difference in output. In addition, locate the "level" knob on your Nord Lead A1 (top right). Turning this up may also give you a small boost depending on the program. Now, with that said, you may still be able to use the line inputs from the back and then enhance the volume in your DAW and it may still sound good. This may depend on your DAW. You could also consider a pre-amp and continue and then continue to use the line inputs in the back.
      Here is more detailed info on this from the Nord User Forum: www.norduserforum.com/nord-stage-forum-f3/boosting-gain-into-audio-interface-t16932.html

      @burchwoodstudio2548 Hello, Burchwood Studio, and glad you found the right video! With Nord boards, you'll ALWAYS use unbalanced 1/4" cables (TS type). Even though the Scarlett products can handle either cable type coming in, Nord boards are always sent out on an unbalanced cable on both ends. Also note that from the Scarlett to the PA/Speaker, you'll likely be using balanced cables at that point (refer to the requirements of your PA/Speaker/Amp.)

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  10 месяцев назад

      @alessandrodicostanzo2530 Hello! Great question, actually. From the Nord keyboard, you'll be using a standard 1/4" (6.3 mm) audio cable into the audio interface. Please ensure it's the "TS" type cable (tip sleeve) as well. Although the audio interface can accept multiple cable types, the Nord keyboards require the use of a traditional guitar audio cable because the outputs from the Nord are "unbalanced," which means you are to use the tip/sleeve cable only (versus the tip/ring/sleeve type). Good luck with your recordings!

      Hi Gili! So connecting your Nord Keyboard to the computer to power MIDI is a simple matter of plugging in the USB cable from the Nord to the computer. (No audio interface is required). Just plug and play. You'll see right away this working with GarageBand. Now, having MIDI trigger your Nord keyboard, on the other hand, is a little more complex. That's because there are more settings on the computer side of things to get that to work. First of all, it requires Logic Pro X or something similar. GarageBand cannot send out MIDI to external instruments - it can only receive MIDI. This would make a good video actually so I'll consider adding it to the long-term possibilities list. • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 года назад +1

      Hello @gabrielirlanda! Sorry for the delay on this response here. You should be able to use a Scarlett 2i2 and connect each mono plug in the front and have something like GarageBand on your computer interpret that as left and right channels in a stereo configuration.
      *Bonus*
      I took the liberty to copy this excerpt from page 13 of the Focusrite 2i2 User Guide (fael-downloads-prod.focusrite.com/customer/prod/s3fs-public/downloads/Scarlett2i2%203rd%20Gen%20User%20Guide_EN.pdf) where it states:
      "In STEREO mode, Input 1 is routed to the left output channel and Input 2 to the right. Use this mode
      if you are recording something that is inherently stereo in nature. Monitoring in stereo will give you
      a more accurate impression of the sound stage. Examples are any situation where two microphones
      are being used to deliberately capture a stereo image such as a pair of overhead drum mics, a single
      stereo mic recording an orchestra or other ensemble, or the stereo outputs of an electronic source
      such as a piano, synthesizer or FX unit."
      Hope that helps clarify this question. Good luck!

    does the audio interface need loopback to do this?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Год назад

      Hello - the answer to this is yes, mostly. An interface will typically be able to re-route audio from what the computer hears simply by selecting the audio interface when you select the sound output device from your computer. This allows you to play your DAW and hear it all through your interface (versus hearing it directly from headphones connected to the computer). So, technically, that concept is "loopback" and interfaces do this out of the box. Have a look at this affiliate blog post of loopback fully explained here by our friends at Sweetwater: imp.i114863.net/jWo41v
      From a recording perspective, if you want to hear what you are playing while you are recording AND you want to hear the existing tracks in your DAW, then I think the best way to go about this is to make sure your DAW is sending its sound to the interface along with your keyboard at the same time. (All sound should be listened to with your speakers and/or headphones connected to the interface - do not be tempted to plug your headphones into the computer directly). Now, where this starts to get confusing is that your DAW likely has the ability to provide "input monitoring," which will let you hear whatever sound is coming in on that track (while recording). However, if you turn that on, you may find this causes a delay in the sound when you play. I'd refer to the connections again at the beginning of the video and start with that as your setup.
      Good luck!

    How can I sample a Roland boutique with my ELECTRO 6d and can I use the pitch bend on the Roland boutique with the Nord keyboard.Also can you layer a Roland boutique sound with a sound on the electro.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 года назад

      Hello @Random Vlogs All of this is very possible:
      1) To learn how to sample with your Nord Keyboard (enroll in my free course: "Master The Nord Sample Editor"): www.MyKeysToMusic.com
      2) To control your Electro 6 using an external keyboard's pitch bend, watch my RUclips video here: ruclips.net/video/YRYJf2J4fO4/видео.html BUT WAIT, this requires that you actually play the Roland and the pitch bend. You can't play the Nord while using the Roland pitch bend. In other words, the pitch bend ONLY works if you are actually triggering the notes from the external keyboard.
      3) Once you have all that setup, you can connect the two keyboards via a simple MIDI connection from the Roland to the Electro and layer two sounds triggered from the Roland or switch up the connections and do the reverse (or do both at the same time). I am assuming you have the one of the Boutiques that actually include the keyboard of course. I wasn't sure which one you are using exactly.
      Report back if you get all this going the way you like or if you have more questions...

      Hello @Luis Tejara - sorry for the delay in this response. Yes, you can connect your speakers directly to the interface, and yes you can hear both the Nord keyboards and the sounds that come from the computer at the same time. The Interface in many ways acts like a sort of mixing board so long as it has multiple inputs. Those multiple inputs can output to either speakers or headphones (all at the same time) - just like a mixing board can. The difference here is that the interface can also double as a connection to the computer. Note that some mixing boards can also act as an interface too, so there is a lot of cross-over with equipment these days. Hope that helps answer the question!

    Hi Marc! Before I ask my question, I just wanted to say how much in debt I am to your well articulated and thorough videos. Thank you for your time and effort. Now, I just purchased my new NS3 and I’m ready to do some recording with my PC. I have 2 questions: 1) I plan to record directly from my Nord into my computer and I also plan to play MIDI files from my PC using both my Nord sounds as well as sounds on my PC. WIth my band, I’m want to play multi tracks at once as I can’t accomplish doing this all “live”. What device is the most cost effective? 2) For PC, what program do you recommend me using for music production/recording? I’m new to all of this so I can be easily molded and don’t have to worry about being accustomed to a particular program. Hope that all makes sense and apologies if anything is unclear as I may be fumbling a bit here. Thank you, Tony.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад +1

      Tony! Thanks so much for your comment and compliments. Congrats on your new NS3!! You mention you have a PC. I assume that Windows not a Mac? This will determine what choices you have for DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). When it comes to MIDI and your keyboard, you'll want a DAW that can receive MIDI and send it back to the Nord. That means GarageBand for Mac cannot be used for such things but LogicPro X for example, can. People each have their favorite DAW and your favorite should be the "one you already know how to use." But since this is all new for you, you may want to consider Ableton Live which is flexible in features as well as it's flexible on what computer platform you use. I don't use it personally, but if I was starting over from scratch, I would strongly consider it. I like the idea that it's geared toward live performance use as well as recording. Yet, asking someone "which DAW should I consider?" is like asking someone, "Which car should I buy?" The choices are vast and wide and the research to analyze the features will have you spending hours if you let it... Like a car, they all pretty much get you do the destination but it's up to you which one resonates with you based on your review of it.
      So, with question #1: where you want to mix both Nord sounds along with Virtual/MIDI sounds from the computer, just about any modern-day DAW will do this today. It's a matter of finding one that has the feature you like on the platform you have. Here's an article that can potentially help you with that decision: www.audiomentor.com/audioproduction/how-to-choose-a-daw/
      You'll need to also consider some form of an audio/MIDI interface. As you've seen above, I like the Focusrite line but there are many great ones to choose from today. Here's a decent article from Sweetwater to help you with this one: www.sweetwater.com/insync/choosing-audio-interface/
      So, with question #2: I really lean towards Ableton Live for you. This is because this DAW in particular is good with mixing sounds that you'll be playing live along with sounds that are pre-recorded playing along. You'll have to get used to using a click track in these cases perhaps. This exact method is used heavily in pro worship setups where Ableton Live is the "conductor" for the band all playing along with a click track. I'm so amazed but what people have been able to do with it. In the following example here, I don't know if they're using Ableton specifically but it's a good example of what it's like to play with a click track where (in this case) the music is synced with the video: ruclips.net/video/-jyi-ZW40qI/видео.html
      Feel free to continue asking questions as they come up. You may want to consider my pro Nord Stage 3 course as another tool to help along your journey...

      @@MyKeysToMusic Thanks again, Marc! Sorry for the late reply. I've decided in lieu of buying a new Apple laptop, I'm using an existing PC to start getting my feet wet with gaining exposure to a DAW, and in this case, Reaper. A quick question to you is identifying the optimal audio interface. I like what I've seen with your Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 but for $399.99 it's a bit out of my range. What do you recommend that would be in the $100-$200 neighborhood? I only plan to interface my NS3 using MIDI and audio. I don't have any other instruments (at the moment) that I'd like to record nor do I have a need for somebody to plug in the 2nd pair of headphones. *Hardware Setup*
      A. Connect the Focusrite output (using the USB option) also directly into the computer.
      B. Assuming the DJ product transmits audio out via USB, connect the DJ to your computer directly using the USB option.
      *Software Setup*
      A. Using Ableton on a single track, route your Mic to input one from the Focusrite (mono, not stereo).
      B. Using Ableton on a second track, route it to receive from the DJ until (stereo input).
      C. Enable "multi-track" recording on Ableton. I'm not sure how to do this exactly, but I'm sure you can find help on it - it may even be ready for that by default.
      D. Set both tracks to record simultaneously and start recording your podcast. Also, kill the metronome which is typically on by default with these types of programs while recording.
      By doing it this way, you'll be able to go back and adjust volumes and/or EQs of either the Music track or your voice track at any time while editing in Ableton. Having everything in Ableton like this enables you to also bring in intro/outro music after the fact as needed. You can also edit your voice track as needed if you said something incorrectly etc.
      Hope that helps and good luck with your podcasting!

Then, you'll most likely use TRS cables from the interface to your speaker system (depending on what you are using for speakers/amp). But, in the end, the Nord keyboards always have their outputs using standard unbalanced jacks with TS cables.

    Hi, I would like your input to my dilemma.
    I have a PX-360M Casio digital keyboard, and can be plug/play Midi usb cable through the garageband, but garageband don't read my keyboard... not sure if it's a usb cable's fault or something...
    The keyboard that I'm using also equipped with its own internal midi/audio recording that I usually used since usb cable for midi won't work.
    My question is that if I should I buy an audio interface (eg. Scarlett solo) to connect my keyboard + my condenser microphone and use garageband ?
    I would like to play and sing at the same time + monitor it, that's why am torn if I should buy an audio interface or just use garageband (the only problem I had is that my condenser mic picks up single noise especially when playing keyboard even when the room is really really quiet, do I need to lower the mic gains?)
    Hope you can help me with come up with a solution, and sorry for the long sentences.

      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад

      @Ice.Pianist Thanks for your question and nice to have a fellow RUclips creator come by for a visit.
      If you want to sing and play at the same time the condenser mic will pick up the noise from the keys and there is no way of getting around that. The question is will it be noticeable in the final mix or not? I highly recommend this video ruclips.net/video/uKKSKI9XB7I/видео.html where you'll find the exact answers you are looking for. AND I also recommend the Focusrite 4i4 as shown later in that video. The Scarlett Solo won't provide enough inputs for you to do all this. In addition, your keyboard needs 2 cables - one for the left and one for the right channel. It may not sound good if you record in mono.
      If you want absolute isolation of the vocals, you'll need either a different type of mic or record your vocals separately. I noticed you don't typically show your face on your videos so it would be easy to record the vocals separately while the video shows you playing? Hope this helps get you started. Do watch the video above and best of luck!

      Yes, I could do it separately if I want to have a smooth vocal recordings. I have tried it before :)

      Since I'm super new to audio interface, which one would you recommend that I buy to use in the long run?
      The Behringer that is in your description link or Focusrite 4i4 or 2i2?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад

      @@itsMizaa I like the 4i4 best out of the ones you mentioned. I think the 2i2 is going to be too limiting for you long term as the 4i4 provides much more flexibility long-term. For example, if you ever add a second keyboard or want to join with a guitarist and record together, the 4i4 has you covered. I'm sure the Behringer is a good unit as well but I can't speak for it directly since I don't own it. I can tell you that the Focusrite is built to last and I've been using mine daily for several hours a day since 2017 and it has yet to fail me. At this point, I don't think I'll ever wear it out! So, yes, I like the Focusrite products and the 4i4 is the one I lean towards. The Behringer is a great value for what it is (less costly than the Focusrite products) and I'm sure it will get the job done. I happen to like the look of the Focusrite product a bit better and the red color sort of goes with the color of the Nord keyboards I use. 😄

I’m using 2 TRS cables, sounds pretty good but sometimes it sounds too mellow and I suppose that TS would be slightly clearer (I take care of gain and distorsion of course).
    Could you give me your opinion ? Thanks for your videos !

      @louissaussier6766 Hello Louis! So, technically speaking, you always want to use a standard TS cables coming out of the Nord as they only support unbalanced outputs. Even though the Focusrite products accept either cable type, Nord delivers only via TS (technically speaking). You are free to use TRS cables from the Focusrite to the speakers/PA of course, so long as your equipment on the receiving end of that is compatible with that as well. Also make sure your Focusrite is setup to treat the incoming inputs as stereo. By default , Focusrite products treat incoming signals as mono in my experience. Hey there blobdang - sorry for the delay on this response. The RUclips email notifications have stopped working (this is sometimes a problem for creators). But anyway, congrats on getting this connected. So yes, in order to sync up the video of you playing from your iPhone along with your recording of the synth, you'll need to use a video editor of some sort. You can consider something as available as iMovie (Mac only) (www.apple.com/imovie/) or you can invest in something a bit more powerful called "Screenflow" (www.telestream.net/screenflow/overview.htm) - that's what I'm using at the moment (also Mac only). So you'd take your video file from your phone and combine that with your finished recording (you could export as an MP3 from GarageBand). Sync both in the video editor and then export and publish. Hmm - maybe I should make a "content creator series" specific to keyboard players where people want to make their own videos/recordings. Now you got me thinking. Let me know if that answers the question, feel free to ask more as you get to the next hurdle.

But a video on how to get a recorded video to sync with sound for the purposes of making a simple music video for musicians, that might not be out of the question.

      Hi @Giuseppe Di Maio. So the line-level inputs on the Focusrite back panel are calibrated very low. Try using the front two inputs instead. When I use the back inputs, I tend to have to double the recording volume/output on the computer X2 or so. thanks, there is a "trick" in RUclips for recording audio from keyboard to iMac in a cheap way, which is by plugging a Mic-Headphone adapter on the iMac and connecting the keyboard using a 3.5 stereo jack from the headphones output to the mic on the adapter, do you know if that works? if it record in stereo? or does the quality is very bad?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 года назад

      Hello @gabrielirlanda. Sorry for the delay here. That might actually work if you're iMac has a mic input jack in the back. The new IMacs no longer come with this jack (just a headphone jack). So, if you find that yours has this option, then you could plug it in and give it a try. The headphones are going to put out more volume so you may get distortion if you set the gain too high. This is a tough one to answer as I don't have my old Mac computers anymore to test. Then again, a simple mic to USB adapter might do the trick. Have a look at this (affiliate link): amzn.to/2EYrYu5. This wouldn't be my first choice on how to set things up but I have done stuff like this in the past and it worked out. Hey @Max Reder I plan to have at least one video in early 2021 about this exact topic with Logic Pro X. I have to finish the "Master the Nord Wave 2" course first which is getting there and should be done in the next few weeks. But this topic is a good one for RUclips I think. The focus of the video (or maybe it will be a series of videos) will be to record MIDI into the keyboard, make your edits and quantize and then play the MIDI back into the actual keyboard. Finally, take that completed and cleaned up performance and record it back into Logic as the final audio track. That brings the concept full circle providing for the best results. There are just a lot of steps to it which is best explained in video format. Oh, and if you want to see me using Logic Pro X as the clock driver to the Nord keyboard, I do so here: ruclips.net/video/rXlee2Wa8i0/видео.html. You'll notice that the Logic BPM fluctuates between 118 and 119 because I used Logic to auto-detect the beats from the original tune. Anyway, in the video just mentioned, I don't actually show each step of this which is one thing I think would be good for an upcoming video. In any case, once you figure all this out, it becomes a mind-blowing experience - at least it was for me when it finally all happened. Thanks for the comment and for watching! 🏄

And the promise of this in Logic is that it's also supposed to be straightforward. A couple of years ago I enrolled in a Logic Pro Udemy course. I'll have to see if there is a section in there about audio quantization and how best to approach it. Hello @Akshay Dwivedi
      Hmm, My first guess would be that there is something not quite right with either the configuration software that comes with the Audient or something in Cubase. You may want to troubleshoot this in steps:
      1) Disconnect everything
      2) First connect your Nord Output 1 & 2 into the Input of the Audient. Then, test to be sure you hear the Nord keyboard when you plug headphones into the Audient front headphones jack.
      If that works proceed.
      3) Now connect the outputs from the Audient into the Yamaha speakers. Do not use the XLR option. Use the 1/4 option and you can try using TRS cable types. I'm not sure what is compatible with that interface exactly. Now play. Do you hear sound coming from the speakers? If not, try a standard TS cable. Also make sure you are connected from the Audient using the correct outputs - use the ones labeled with a speaker icon. If you still don't hear anything, load up your Audient software and connect to your computer. You may have to adjust the audio routing configuration for your interface. I know that on the Focusrite products, you have to configure things before the sound goes where it needs to.
      If that works proceed
      4) Now connect the Audient to your computer if you haven't already done so and load up Cubase. In the Cubase settings, you'll need to select your interface for both sound input and output if you can. Play the board and see if you can see any meters running. If so, that means that Cubase is hearing things.
      5) Try recording into Cubase. You can record while listening to the headphones still connected to Audient.
      6) Try playing back the recording. You should hear sound from both your headphones as well as the speakers. If not, it's either because your DAW isn't sending audio out to the interface OR the interface is not set to route the sound coming in from the DAW back out to the speakers/headphones.
      Report back once you break it down and take it in small steps like this. It really helps troubleshoot where the problem is in most cases.

      @MyKeysToMusic  4 года назад +1

      What I have found out as well as many others as well is that the Focusrite line levels for the back jacks are very weak compared to the front. That coupled with the Nord keyboard may be too low for most things. I do use these jacks in the back (as I explained in my video) and the signal is weak even with full volume. However, I mostly connect my keyboards using a software program called "Screenflow" which allows me to raise the volume and it doesn't seem to have any negative effect. The Screenflow and Focusrite combination allows me to split all the audio into separate channels which is essential for me when I make these videos. I have used the front jacks as well and the signal level is night and day by comparison. Perhaps the jacks in the back work well for guitars and such but not as well suited to the Nord line of keyboards? Others have reported that it happens too with their Yamaha's and such and they claim it has to do with the line levels of the Focusrite architecture.

      1) Go into GarageBand Prefs and select the Audio/MIDI icon. Make sure you have the mAudio interface selected there for the input and output device.
      2) Make sure you create a new track as an "Audio" track.
      3) While creating the track, at the bottom of that popup track window you'll see an option called "Input". Make sure that correlates to the inputs you are using on the mAudio.
      4) Select the track you just created
      5) Push the record button and see if any audio lines are drawn from your performance. If so, you have success.

      Hi Allan Joel Sallan. Great question. So, essentially anything with a USB port can plug directly into the computer without the need for an audio interface from the get-go. There is one exception to this if you want to record audio from a given instrument and record that into GarageBand too.
      ⦿ In the case of the USB microphone, you'll simply plug that into the computer and GarageBand will see it as an audio source. You'd set up an audio track in GB and you're good to go for recording it.
      ⦿ In the case of the piano with the USB port, the same thing applies. You'll be able to plug it into the computer and directly control virtual instruments via MIDI in GarageBand.
      ⦿ If you want to record the "sounds" from the piano into GarageBand you'll likely need an audio interface. Although in some cases, both sounds and MIDI are transferred over the USB cable into a computer - but not always. You'll have to look in your manual for that detailed info. In the case of Nord keyboards, for example, ONLY MIDI is transferred over the USB cable. So, this is why in that case, an audio interface would be needed to record the audio from the Nord keyboards. The interface transforms the analog audio signals from the keyboard into digital audio (something the computer can understand and record).
      Hopefully, that helps. Feel feel to continue asking questions until we get you to your answer. 😃

    Hi, This was very knowledgeable. I have a focusrite 18i20 and use it to track keys, guitars and vocals. Due to the pandemic, we have now begun using Google Duo/Zoom to have online worship sessions. However, there are audio issues (crackling) which I temporarily resolve by changing the I/O buffer size on Logic. This is tedious and annoying. Is there a solution you can help with.
    I'm using blackhole aggregate in Audio Midi setup and that goes into into logic, and then using an aux send it goes to an empty channel on blackhole.
    Hope I could explain it right... I need help!!

      Hi Dave. This is the first I hear of Blackhole Aggregate but it looks awesome (existential.audio/blackhole/). It kind of reminds me of an App called "SoundFlower" which I used back in the day (github.com/mattingalls/Soundflower/releases/tag/2.0b2) but I like Blackhole better by the looks of it - but never used it. So, at this time I don't know enough about this particular technique/setup to provide any real help here - I'm sorry! Maybe someone else can chime in. I did read this thread on the issue (which you may have already seen by now) which might help: www.logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=124874 It sounds like you are on the right track with the I/O buffer as tedious as is it. Maybe the computer simply can't run the tracks your sending? Time for an upgrade to an M1 chip? Perhaps you can bounce multi-tracks down in Logic giving it less to chew on if possible. These are just some random ideas to help take it to the next step. Best of luck and report back if you find something notable that does the trick.

Thank you so much and I am definitely going to delve in Udemy. Would you say I advance in Garageband first or straight away move to Logic X to apply all learning effort there? My aim is to do high quality recordings of my compositions' attempts.

      @@faautobahna9416 I love stories like this!! A serious congratulations are in order here - well done! You have done something many have done yes, but most have not yet attempted... I can tell you that GarageBand is far simpler to use and set up and navigate through than Logic Pro X. So yes, my general advice would be to stick with GarageBand for a while until such time that you have really mastered it or you find yourself needing the advanced features that Logic Pro X offers.
      If you are curious as to why professionals turn to Logic Pro X over GarageBand I recommend you watch this video at 2X speed (ruclips.net/video/_J5ISiEZSDY/видео.html). It's 20 minutes and goes through why Logic Pro X is better than GarageBand from this person's opinion and extensive use of it. If by the end of the video you find you don't need but a tenth of what Nathan is talking about, then definitely stick with GarageBand. If you had a recording that involved singers and you're looking to do an album, there are things in Logic Pro X that give you the fidelity in editing you need for that sort of recording. But you can do so much with GarageBand that you really have to weigh the learning curve that comes with Logic. This is all brand new stuff so you don't want to get short-circuited with the tech - it sometimes gets in the way of the creativity.
      From a keyboard player standpoint, what we sometimes want is the ability to playback MIDI files into our Nord keyboards so we can use them as a sound source (and not just rely on the soft instruments in GarageBand). This is the big deal-breaker here. GarageBand cannot send MIDI out - it can only receive MIDI in. For some, that is game over and they immediately use Logic from that point forward and never look back. But it's a bigger mountain to climb. I use both programs but I can tell you that if the project I'm working with can be done with GarageBand - I typically use that over Logic and you'll be quite amazed what GarageBand is capable of on its own.
      Good luck and thanks for watching! 😎

    Would you be able to record the Nord as Mono in channel one if you only have one of those cables?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад

      Hello @Malachi Hooper. You don't need a special cable to record the Nord in Mono. You can use a typical TS cable 1/4 coming out of the Nord on Output 1 for example. At that point, you'll be in Mono and you'll hear sound coming from either side UNTIL you use an effect like Delay with Ping Pong or the Pan effect. If you have a Stage or an Electro, you can additionally put the keyboard in "Mono" mode which will take care of that. In the end, recording your keyboard in Mono mode will provide for a more "flatter" sound and it's not ideal by any means. Which interface is better Audient id14 MKII or focusrite 4i4 for recording nord’s piano in stereo?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 года назад +1

      Hello @Akshay Dwivedi While I don't own the Audient, it looks to really give the Focusrite a run for the money. Both units will accomplish the job. Here's my two-second comparison:
      *Pros of the Focusrite*
      - More input options. (2 mic/line and 2 line inputs). Versus just a total of two with the Audient.
      - More configurable? (Focusrite uses software to route the in and out ports for max flexibility)
      - Name brand (founded in 1987). Focusrite has been around forever and has a strong track record. Audient is no slouch however as they were founded in 1997.
      - Price (slightly less than the Audient)
      *Pros of the Audient*
      - Dual headphone jacks (2 instead of 1)
      - Smaller footprint (looks to be lighter and smaller than the Focusrite)
      - Better sound quality? (They really go out of their way to talk about the low noise floor, you'd want to compare that with the details of the Focusrite).
      - Other?
      Good luck with your research. It sounds like you can't go wrong with either. I do know for a fact that the back line inputs on the Focusrite products tend to "not be loud enough" with the Nord keyboards. Using the front inputs, however, will work like a charm every time.

      Thank you and great question. Nord keyboards do not send audio through the USB port whatsoever. They do, however, send MIDI through the USB jack. So, if you want to record your Nord keyboard, the only way to do it is with the audio jacks (left and right / 1 and 2). That means you're going to need an audio interface to convert the audio signal into a digital signal for the computer.

      Hello @Ned Ashcroft good news. Your interface will accept two 1/4" cables via the front directly from your Yamaha (left and right) and you can use those ports with your DAW. Those ports in front are "universal" and will work perfectly fine with your keyboard. Just adjust the gain using the knobs in the front. Start at halfway up and adjust so that your level are high but not in the red when recording based on the loudest part of the piece.
      Oh, and when you are ready to take things to the next level with your music, you can learn how to record MIDI, fix the MIDI, and end up with a final product as audio assuming you like the sounds of your Yamaha. Have a look at my other video first to see if this will enlighten you with possibilities and it also addresses the proper way to connect the MIDI if you should need to go in that direction: ruclips.net/video/V_FGQ83xH0Q/видео.html Like I said, you don't need MIDI for a straight recording from your hands on the Yamaha into the computer when you follow a click track from your DAW. As you play the MIDI keyboard, the sounds of the comptuer will be triggered and the audio will come out through the Focusrite and into the amp.

      However as a pro musician, you'd never show up to a gig with a USB mic - you'd be laughed right out of the venue not because they are not necessarily good, but it's like showing up to a gas station asking where the electric car chargers are - we're not there yet.. Yet there is one mic that is both (see# 7 in the article in the link above). Things are changing fast out there. Thanks. So if I want to hear my keyboard through headphones, they must be connected to the audio interface and not the keyboard itself?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад +1

      Hello @Toby Yes! When you plug the headphones into the audio interface you get a several advantages over plugging them into the keyboard itself:
      1) You are hearing what the audio interface hears - and this is really important to be sure you've routed the sound correctly - especially if you plan to record the audio from the keys.
      2) Because you are directly connected to the audio interface, you'll be able to hear the playback from any DAW that is also connected by way of the audio interface. This means you won't have to constantly plug and unplug your headphones from the keyboard to the interface just to hear what the computer is sending out.
      3) You'll be able to mix multiple keyboards. If your audio interface supports it, you'll be able to plug-in a second or third keyboard so that you can hear all keys mixed. In fact, the audio interface can be considered a basic mixing board too. And in this case, people would plug into the audio interface/mixing board, not to the keyboards themselves.
      4) Latency/Lag - by plugging into the interface itself (versus the computer), you'll be able to play without any kind of lag.
      5) If you are recording music, you typically need to hear either a metremone (typically from a computer) or some form of accompaniment (bass/drums) in order to record what you are playing in time. You can't do this if you're headphones are connected to the keyboard only.
      Hope that helps explain this a bit more. Good 🍀 with your setup and recording!

      @L Shwadchuck Yes, I think what you have discovered makes sense. And I find that everyone uses their Stage 3 in a slightly different way. You have to find what works best for you while recording. I almost never use the extra outputs so maybe I'm missing something there! I hope to have more videos on the recording process with Nord keyboards - it's a big area of demand right now...

      @@MyKeysToMusic I do want to try recording MIDI. I might get hold of a MIDI interface that's at least as old as my Nord, but I don't understand how the resulting files get into Garageband, since my MIDI-to-USB cable wanted my Mac Catalina to have an up to date Nord driver. There isn't one. Does the interface save files?

      @@lshwadchuck5643 Typically, the interface doesn't save files at all. GarageBand would save the files. Also, note that GarageBand cannot send MIDI signals back out to your Nord keyboard - it can only receive MIDI signals in. Of course, GarageBand can also record audio in and play it back provided you have some form of audio interface.
      *To record basic MIDI into your computer (GarageBand) and then have that play the GarageBand virtual instruments, it should be this simple for you:*
      A. Connect your Nord keyboard directly to your computer via the USB cable.
      B. Open GarageBand and create a new MIDI track
      C. Within the track settings, you should see your Nord Keyboard appear as one of the options.
      D. Set the track to record and hit the main record button. (you should see MIDI notes appear on the screen as you're playing the keyboard).
      E. What you will "hear" is GarageBand. You won't hear your Nord keyboard through the computer necessarily. MIDI is the computer signal only and that signal in this case is driving the built-in GarageBand virtual instruments - track by track.
      Now, if you're looking to do something more sophisticated such as to record MIDI into GarageBand and have that MIDI then turn around and play the sounds from your Nord Keyboard, that is a different animal altogether and requires Logic Pro or the equivalent. I don't have a video on that yet, but it's in the works.

      @@MyKeysToMusic that is exactly what my son, who is an electronic music producer, says I should be able to do. He disdains the piano sounds in Garageband. Even my teacher, who prefers Pianoteq to sampled pianos, admits the samples are gorgeous. Anyway, if things get safe enough for train travel, my son can come here and get me set up.

      @@lshwadchuck5643 Terrific! And yes, the piano samples in GarageBand have a lot to be desired. They are however a good start for the basic beginner (and free with all Mac computers), so I'm not complaining too much in concept. But compared to a Nord keyboard, well, there is no comparison.
