Closest I got to one of my snakes eating himself is when my boa missed a strike on a mouse and landed it square on the side of his body. Fortunately he noticed his mistake almost immediately. Something else to note is that it’s most often ophiophagous species like kingsnakes that eat themselves, since they instinctually eat other snakes

Bull sharks are another species that can unintentionally kill themselves. When they're territorial, they'll charge something that could challenge them for their territory, but if they charge into something sharp (in a theoretical situation which, yes, isn't very likely, charging into a swordfishes' bill), they can impale themselves on the challenger. And of course sometimes they can try swallowing something that's too big, so they choke.

I went to see tarsiers as a kid they were in little tourist traps on the road near forests where they were in a building with a lot of open windows and stayed on small branches to resemble their habitat. The caretakers were very insistent for the visitors to be quiet and no flash photography. After watching this I see why

There is a story from the Aboriginal Dreamtime amongst the people in far north Australia about how one night a hunter strayed too close to a small evil creature that lives in trees, has huge glowing eyes and suction cups on its fingers. The creature grabbed the unsuspecting hunter and infected the hunter who inevitably turned into one of these creatures themselves.
This is thought to be a shared distant memory of when the people who ended up being the Australian Aboriginals were moving through Southeast and saw Tarsiers. They were obviously such unusual animals that it left an in-print on them to the point that it became incorporated into their creation myths. That's pretty cool if true...

Octopuses kinda kill themselves by mating. If you can keep one in captivity from mating - it can live longer than it likely would in the wild.

@@GeteMachine And the females die as soon as their brood doesn't need her to siphon water over them.
This brings me to a very interesting topic about menopause. It's very rare for females in the animal kingdom to live much past one's reproductive stage. Humans and a few whales are the only species known to experience a healthy life stage past menopause. Most animals don't, which leads to growing support for the Grandmother Hypothesis in evolutionary science.

Would you do animal species found in surprising places? I don’t mean invasive species or the occasional bird that gets blown off course, but rather animals that are native to a place one wouldn’t expect. For example, desert elephants. Most people think of elephants as living in jungles and on the savanna. The fact that there are desert elephants is surprising and also a little confounding-how does such a large animal sustain itself in such a harsh environment? I’m sure there are other examples as well.

*(I had to edit because I did see a ball python try to eat itself once but it was a Spider Ball and had neurological issues that made it notorious for missing strikes. With a little time and human intervention, he eventually uncoiled but it was sad to witness, none the less)

I’ve owned snakes for about 5 years now. (I’ve had four) while I myself haven’t had any that eat themselves, I’ve had some friends who have had a few. A few cases that came to mind were 1.snakes with neurological issues (spider balls), 2. FTT infants/hatchlings 3. Parasite issues 4. Severely overheated (either in transit from breeders or accidental issues with enclosures) 5. Extreme stress. Though more often it was 1,4 or 5.Unfortunately most of them pass away from the additional stress of the incident.

In a local pond, one poor fella dropped a tree on its foot and apparently remained there until it expired (yikes!). 2 years later, another was chewing a large log off the suspended end of a previously felled tree, which came down like a pile driver and brained the unfortunate chucker of wood.

When it comes to keeping wild animals as pets it depends on the animal. Many animals like cats will come in from the wild and domesticate themselves if gently approached. Genets, Mongoose, Raccoons and Ringtail Cacomistles as well as a few other species in the Primates will come in from the wild and adopt a home and family. Some rodents and v unglazed too. Pretty much anyone who has rats and who approaches them gently as well as feeding them can tame wild rats into being companions. It can even be done with mice who are more skittish. You should do a video on the subject of self domestication within the animal kingdom. Raccoons have already overcome their solitary nature to be around people but it took over a hundred years.
