I did a presentation on “endangered species” in 2013, and the animal I chose was the “extinct” night parrot. Technically this was not allowed, it needed to be an endangered species, not an extinct one, but I still did it because I believed night parrots were still out there. I was like 10 at the time. Years later hearing about the discovery of living populations made me feel strangely vindicated.

If you're feeling poorly about the destructive ways of humanity, remember this, humans are not the only species that hunts or otherwise causes the extinction of other species, but we are the only species that actively tries to pull other species back from the brink of extinction. It's not all bad.

I witnessed an Ivory Billed Woodpecker in the Appalachian Mountains in 1971. I reported it to a representative of the Audubon Society within a half hour of my sighting. He came out and took photos of where I had seen the bird. As we spoke he was grilling me on how I was able to distinguish the Ivory Billed from a Pileated. I explained that I read encyclopedias, whole sets of them. He wanted to see the encyclopedias.
After examining the area the bird had been in, he came to see these encyclopedias. He was stunned to find the most current set of the Encyclopediae Brittanica, as well as its Junior set. Then, a set of Colliers encyclopedias from 1950 with beautiful watercolor prints of the subjects. They became sought after by collectors in later 1970s. From those illustrations I had identified, and distinguished Ivory Billed from Pileated woodpeckers. The Audubon Society representative acknowledged the beauty of the illustrations and wrote the name and date of the Colliers set.
I took a photo, but when it came back from being developed they showed nothing but black and white blurs.😅
