- Biologists in New Zealand have found around 100 new species after exploring a rift some 5 kilometers beneath the sea. The organisms include some that scientists can't even identify, as well as a strange creature called a 'sea-pig'.

Crazy how it's like the ocean got a surprise update patch
I’m still waiting on the dlc
They keep buffing the creatures in Australia
First Chile discovers 100 new species and now New Zealand. Something is happening here
Maybe the sea creatures are running from something below or maybe there's something below that is causing them all to show up? Idk but this is odd @@neo2190
Let my homie big G cook🙏🔥🔥
Discovered just in time for them to be soon classified as extinct
You joke, but that's actually happened before in NZ's waters. (Just not by humans)
A lighthouse keeper's cat on had brought in a weird bird, so it was sent off to London for identification. By the time it had been identified as a new species, the cat had killed every single one of those birds on the island.
This is the only known case of a single creature causing the extinction of an entire species.
Edited for technical accuracy.
Edit 2: Turns out this isn't quite true, and more of a pre-urban legend. Multiple factors led to the extinction of the Lyall's wren, and the above story was exaggerated for effect.

😂 True. So funny. I mean I believe them but it’s funny
It's top secret
That "sea pig" and that "eel" look like they went through the same thing the "blobfish" went through.
You only know this because u saw a video of it recently, stop acting like u know more than them
@@mrpickles-hb6zx It's a simple theory. You're out of line
@@mrpickles-hb6zx well, for one, I just made an assumption but never compared myself to the researchers so I don't know where this aggression is coming from. And two, I was able to confirm through asking in a subreddit that while the eelpout looks normal, the sea pig was in fact subject to depressurization which caused it to look like that; the same thing that caused the blobfish to look gelatinous in that one viral photo.
sure is
that's the purpose of videos, so we know more and start acting like we knew more than we did the day before

1:38, i can tell that the fish exploded itself like blobfish collapse into a squishy mush when they are pulled up to the surface.
1:42 I don’t like how he chucked it instead of gently placing it down
I completely agree with this
Oh no bunch of sensible people there again
@@ChobeVelyashawait till they find out how other animals treat these ones...
He looked like he “chucked” it down because it was likely dead already. They don’t care. It’s all in their pursuit of “knowledge”, and how “good” this will look for everyone involved’s LinkedIn profiles and their résumé/CV.
It’s funny to me… Everyone complains about illegal fishing & “trolling” or “raking” the seafloor, which is clearly horribly damaging, but look at what these scientists did here. Basically raking a section of seafloor to analyze whatever they pull up. They forcibly removed living things from their homes to LOOK at them, and some of them, he said they couldn’t even figure out “what” they were! What a waste! So naturally, he chucked it back. At that point, nobody cared. 🫤
They don’t need to be gentle. The animals suffocated likely in the open air, if they even survived the capturing process, or the pressure reduction after being forcefully brought to the surface… but no bother to these ppl. Think of the LinkedIn!!
you do realise they're all dead? they've just been ripped from huge pressure to sea level pressure.

My guess is that they want to be the first ones to describe it. They dont want another researcher or person to steal their images and claim they described it first. Scientists are a bit paranoid that way i have learned. I went on an reseaech excursion vessel that had seen a pod of 9 humpback whales that day. That was our goal, to go out and see the whales and track the migration. But they didnt post online or or tell other reasearchers right away because of this same reason. That's only my guess tho!

Oh, the insurmountable loss..
Sounds like that is different topic.
Maybe, but it’s closely related, though. These newly discovered creatures are living on the sea floor. Deep-sea mining would likely destroy their fragile habitat that has been undisturbed for hundreds of thousands of years.@@namenotfound8747
@@andraspeter1114 We do not understand how the ecosystem works, so disregarding its importance is absolutely irresponsible. And even if you don't care about the whole oceanic trophic chain (you should), then out of ethics, one does not destroy life because one does not like how it looks or feels disconnected to it.
@@Flickvids100 We were taklking about deep sea mining which is obviously not senseless destruction. Also Im quite sure that there at least is a legal requirement to conduct studies about marinelife impact before the mining operations beggin. So yeah, not every human activity which is in the interest of the whole species (like getting minerals for green energy production) and causes liminal interference with the habitat of wildlife should be disregarded as unethical. If we say that than basically we should just simply go extinct as human life as we know it is incompatible with an intangible planet.
I would have loved to be on that voyage, the sheer excitement of discovering new species!!! Wow.
🥱
bro this is unbelievable, they found an actual plumbus in the ocean
Wouldn’t bringing to the surface an organism that is used to living with 5km worth of water the pressure likely to kill it?
Yes, they are most likely all dead
Yeah, humans don't really care about that stuff.
Yeah, but science
Yeah, but it's fun to look at how weird they are.
Yes, researching animals from that far down usually kills them. However, researching them is necessary to understand the diversity of their environments and how to best protect them and advocate for them, as well as to help us learn more about the world at large.
That's why I love how there are still tons of things we have yet to discover.
Sad that we have lost so many species we will never even find.
