I love these kinds of stories. But I will say this... Most people just want a pay check so they can eat and sleep under a roof and see the sun the next day, so with that no one will do more than they have to, but they are doing the best they can. This is why a "hero" story is popular.

The manga fell apart for me, but surprisingly the movie adaptation was EXCELLENT. They changed the cringe part, and the ending was truly emotional, where I found the manga to be either blah or cynical. I recommend seeking out the movie version.
