You don't need to cover the entire surface with mud just flair the where the tape is, give it a a good sanding and primer and paint.
Unless he’s going for a level 5… which he is
For future reference,. After sanding sweep wall with a clean broom, leave compound dust and paint over, dust will mix with paint to fill minor imperfections, been doing that for 30 years rehabbing and painting
When I do level 5 work I use a paint roller to apply the mud to the wall the mud needs to be really wet to apply it using this method. It will save your shoulder. Also you can use touch up tint to color your mud to make it easier to see defects as you coat
Tip: Don't clean your mud and paint and dump the water in your septic, mud is clay and will tend to plug up your leach line soil interface same for the paint. A little is not going to hurt but you will wash a lot of mud down the sink cleaning the tools many times over the cabin build.
From what I know about skim coating, you put multiple thin coats on as smooth as you can so you don't have to sand. Less sanding means less waste. :)
Jules is a very patient women. Cause dang Martin dry wall the whole kitchen wall. Hallway n kids room.
there are a few people on youtube, that gave up reading postings. then again, there are a couple of them that read all posts, and get twisted over them. if you have a question that you ask, i can see reading the posts to see if there is a better way of doing something. personally i only post to say how great things look, or i might say something about how i did or do something, just for ideas you might get. but i would never say how you did or are doing something bad. you are doing just fine working and the family is great helping out. so i will never understand how people would give a thumbs down over your videos.
Thanks for the kind words. It is sad to think how miserable they must be.
The reason that we use drywall is to have a premade flat surface. It's to save you the trouble of plastering the whole surface, all that you have to do is fill in the imperfections to make the mostly flat board completely flat.
That some internet fanatic likes to plaster the whole board, doesn't mean that anyone else has to. I call it making an easy job hard. You can't get flatter than factory made drywall. All you can do is make an imperfection where there wasn't one. I think that you got that in the end.
Not to make you feel bad but as you get better the sanding will drop to zero. Knock down your high spots with a dry 6 inch blade then just skim coat it. The key is light coats.
Skim coating - some do, some don't. Those who do - want to see some pattern that would appear on a true plaster wall. Most do not skim coat. Taping the joints is a whole lot faster, easier and a whole lot less expensive. Just a note on using premix. if you are going to use it, open it, add water and use a power paddle to mix. What is far better is NOT using premix, rather mix it yourself. you can mix only what you are going to use and at the consistence you prefer. Finally after sanding your first coat wipe the area with a wet rag right before applying the next coat. I am extremely happy to see your boy working on the house. You are giving him a lot of knowledge, allowing him to gain some skills and most important he will develop enough confidence in himself that any challenge he might face in the future can be fairly evaluated instead of feared.
Thanks you for the kind word about Seth. They mean a lot.
I wouldn't wash the paint brushes in the sink. We did that when we first got our house, and the paint clogged up our sink pipes. Looking great!
I didn't know you had to skim the whole wall... that reminds me of the old plaster and lathe walls from the 1950s. Dude, your final product looks good. Don't beat yourself up on the first wall. Congrats!
One way to get super smooth walls is to use a trowel with a sponge base. Then I wrap a piece of sandpaper around it so the sandpaper is against a soft backing. Sand with a flashlight on an angle and you will see and remove every small imperfection.
There is not a house on this planet that have perfect walls. And if you are going for that plastered wall look, lightly sand, primer, high gloss lacquer base in both kitchen and bathroom for water and grease resistance walls. Martin you are doing just fine, the only person that will notice anything you have pointed out, will be you...lol. Rejoice in the fact you built it yourself. Merry Christmas to you all.
Marty best tip when taping and finishing drywall. Don't overwork your mud as you skimcoat
Keep plugging at it, it will get easier, and you will get better. Getting the kids involved is great. I learned this stuff at the side of my father and grandfather, which gave me the skills and confidence to do things on my own when i became an adult.
You can always get a longer trowel. I have seen guys use what looks like a 2 foot trowel. The longer trowel will leave less waves in the wall and less little ridges in the skim. Texture will hide some of the smaller flaws, if you are planning on texturing that is. Looking great so far. :)
Get yourself a radius 360 sander . Much better than normal rectangle pole sander
Greetings from NEWFOUNDLAND CANADA. Great job you and your wonderful family are doing there.
Don’t forget to put rock well insulation in the walls for sound reduction before sheet rocking the interior walls, this will make a really nice addition to your house , you won’t have to listen to the noise come out of the bedrooms or the bathroom . Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year
I'm no good at drywall, texture is my saving grace.
@Christov I guess orange peel is what I have done and I like it. whatever hides the imperfections.
"March to the tune of YOUR OWN drummer". I say again,.... "yer doing a great job", (for a 'newbie'). In fact, FAR BETTER than most. 52 years in the construction trade and I'd have nothing to say UNLESS you were trying to follow me around all day. I've 'washed out' apprentices that couldn't do as well within 90 days of training. JMHO...God Bless...~Eli.
Add the water in the bucket and mix it with a drill and mixer blade. It will allow you to have more mixed up and give you consistency. Leave the lid on the bucket between pan fills. Looks good. Keep up the hard work.
Hope you all have a Blessed and Merry Christmas.
I agree, a lot of work covering the entire drywall. Even so, you should be a plaster doing this, not bad from a distance. Besides, no one will be eating or sleeping on any of the walls or even look with a magnifying glass. Great job thus far.
Looking good, another coat of paint will help hide the transition area you highlighted at the end of the video, or if you plan on doing wallpaper then it's already good to go as the paper will completely hide the imperfections.
great idea concerning the generator . put just enough gas to recharge , then it runs dry , hella smart !!!!
i cannot agree. when the genny runs dry, it shuts down. i would rather have reserve in the tank so if i needed it, it would be ready. it may be pouring rain or lightning when it was needed again and i would not want to have to fill and crank over and over in the elements. always be prepared for the worst.......g
I would suggest that you mix your own plaster or you call it mud but once you finish skimming and it's still not gone off get a large paint brush get it wet and go over the plaster with the watered paint brush followed with a skimming tool and it should get it a lot smoother, it does work.
Wrong! It's not plaster!
For a first attempt that’s pretty darn good!
don't worry about the small stuff down the road you might decide to do a backsplash or something ,good job ,I love to see people on you tube stepping out of their comfort zones. AWESOME good luck
All you have to do is watch a few RUclips videos and your a pro. Trust me, I do this all the time. lol :)
Koality of Life 😂
You will drive yourself insane fixing every imperfection. I skim coated my first drywall project.....way to much sanding involved... But it's your house.
Admire your enthusiasm and encourage your outlook. Merry Christmas to you and yours God bless Buffalo New York
It's looking beautiful
When doing skim coats get as wide of a knife as you can, also mix the whole bucket to get better consistency
those gouges are from a dirty blade of dried compound. if you can clean the blade before each use ,with hot water ,and then skim the wall with a lightly wet sponge, too smooth the harder hits.
Don’t sand it. Use a wet sponge. You will be amazed. Keep sponging and rinsing the sponge as you go. Try it.
I was taught to wet sponge also. I use a 5 gallon pail of warm water and a grout sponge. Wet the sponge, dampen the mud, flip to the scouring pad side, lightly 'sand' flip back over to the sponge side, wipe the area clean. The excess fills in many blemishes and low spots, and no scratches from hard sanding. And NO DUST. Rinse and repeat, dump the water outside. You dont want all the excess mud in your pipes and septic
Agreed
Looks wonderful great team work
Fade is the word...wipe and spread repeat, repeat repeat and repeat..lol
Looks perfect from here.
To reduce your sanding, try scraping your drywall knife across the dried plaster to knock off the high points. also, when you get to your final sanding, try wetting a sponge and work it across the walls. What it does is dissolve some of the compound and fill in some of the tiny scratches. When I have extra tall walls like you have I put a whole piece up to the ceiling and a whole piece up from the floor, then fill in the space. That puts a double seam down where its easier to reach (less going up and down ladders). Your drywall work is starting to look good...keep it up. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family. :D
Yea tucks want to play..hes cute..ive never done a huge project with drywalling but I have always wet sanded with a sponge it's really easier a old maintenance man showed that to me years ago
I would have started at the top , so if you drop some on the lower part of the wall when your on top all you have to do is scrap it off instead of messing up what you have already done .
You did a good job, you picked a great job on a wall to start a new technique. The kitchen wall will be covered with appliances and cabinets. Don't sweat the small stuff, primer will cover the color differences and paint the other. Good to try something new.
I have a suggestion. I textured my entire house with a 8” knife. It was the best thing I could have done. But, I purposely left some tool marks. They were hardly noticeable. In fact, I had to make extra marks to increase their visibility. The goal was a finish that looked like old plaster. No, I didn’t do a faux finish. And, the texture was pretty smooth, other than the occasional tool mark. The house was 1,900sqft. I scrapped away the old texture that was sprayed on in 1970. In some rooms I installed new sheet rock. Altogether, it was a multi-year project, as I did one room at a time. I would not hesitate to employ this method again. So, make your tool marks irregular, with curves and odd angles. Don’t sand it. Sanding is way too dusty.
Merry Christmas🌸
You guys are really kicking it!!! I think you all are doing an awesome job! Our subfloor is done but now we are shut down for winter. We’ll be back at it in spring. Keep rocking it Marty, you’ll be a pro in no time!
Looks like your are learning -- smooth is the hardest to do, at least 4 to 5 coats total plus a touch up pass. Work from top down, so you don't spit on finish sections. Once done with the mud paint on a coat of PVA sealer. The sealer has some gloss which will show the holidays and allow you to do some touch up. It will also seal the mud and prevent the paint roller from lifting off your new mud.
🎄Merry Christmas⛄ pak Martin, bu Julie, Sarah, Seth .. GBU🙏
your getting bugs in the mud by letting it dry in the bucket. Scoop the sides of the bucket clean and wet rag it, flatten the top of mud add a little bit of water before you seal the lid back on. Try to use less mud for less sanding. Merry Christmas!
I like the positivity keep it up
The moose can sprint really fast for short periods. So, be mindful, give lots of room.
Some joint compound has instruction on the container and tells you how to smooth out rough spots with out sanding.
Actually think you do pretty well. Merry Christmas to you all and a Happy New Year from the UK
...comin' right along, lookin' good, great vid..nothing is perfect..lol..
Use a slightly damp sponge to smooth out the sanding marks. Make sure it’s not too wet or you’ll take off too much. And don’t press hard. It’ll take a little practice but it’ll help you smooth it out.
Bravo Martin vous avancer bien beau travail 😊😘🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
Lol tux found him a little playmate
I think tux over estimate on his visitor friendliness, he nearly getting kick...the moose more like a landowner checking on his new neighbour and what a hostile moose.
@@azmanmdsalleh2009 yes sir but it was funny watching him
@@buddyduncan2095 yeah cuteness overload...!!
I wanted to see you ask Bigfoot in for lunch, but a moose is pretty cool.
After blowing out my elbows during the Venetian plaster fad I learned to do a level 5 by put it on and pull as much off as possible. Now for a level 5 I shoot TUFFHIDE on with a spray rig. Problem is spending 16 hours with a sand sponge and spotlight to get to a level 4 first. Keep on Rocking(get it) ?
Merry Christmas
Hi All I Hope that you and your Family have a Wonderfilled Christmas and may 2020 Bring you all much Happiness. and success.
Mr. Johnson you crack me up now how did you know I needed a good laugh today....thank you kindly sir!!! Tell yah what there...those are your walls, you admit you are a novice and from this set of eye's I think it's a GREAT JOB...if you think so. I am proud of what you and your family have accomplished in building your home. You get an "A PLUS" for effort and doing your very best as a novice and not sitting in front of a computer never trying to take on that difficult JOB!!! Oh a young moose wow brave dog good thing he can run fast HOW NEAT JUST LOVE IT.
Hi Marty you can use a damp spung to even out the skim coat, you could use a bigger knife
i found several thin coats is easier than putting on thicker coats
Try wet sanding rather than with sandpaper. If your careful, you eliminate all that dust!
Looks good
Its def an art that practice and patience takes time...looking good
Looks great...
The moose was SO COOL
Not bad huh
d Merry Christmast
on my old house i made my mud almost like paint and rolled it on with a roller. and plan on trying it on my new house it seemed to work good i hope i get lucky again
Great video!
on you last video i explained what to do with the mud, i also supplied you with a play list to walk you though, looks like you have not done any of it, you dont mix the mud in a tray, you add water to the whole pail and use a good mixer paddle on a high speed drill until it is smooth an creamy, and as you add the 3rd coat you add a little more water to thin a bit for last coat, only sanding that is done, is after the 3rd coat, mixing little bit in a tin, your not getting all the stuff in the pail, it like taking a little paint out of a can and mixing it, you mix the whole can, you dont cover the whole wall with mud, if you want a texched wall or ceiling you spray it on using a textcher compound ,, you apply every coat on smooth not heavy, way to much on the bath room wall for 1st coat, put mud over joint press tape in, and press hard with a over of mud, scrap all extra off, go back to the video i left a great teaching play list
He's kinda thick between the ears when it comes to taking advise from those who know much more than HE DOES !
Usually, a video is made a few weeks before it goes live
@@ItsNature9 not likly , not mine, same say or is old news
@@joedoakes8307 could be, but it not just him,,
I mixed it in a bucket on later coats. Did you notice me saying I jumped ahead? But it was not because of your comment. Links don’t get published publicly and I don’t see them usually. Have to protect kids eyes from pervs sharing inappropriate links. Not meaning you. Sorry.
sukses terus pak martin
my 2 cents: the only thing people notice in a new house (besides the "oh, a new house... so nice") is poorly finished drywall. Either spend the time to get really good at it, or considering bringing in a pro for a day for the final coats on your big surfaces. No one will notice bath, laundry, closets but everyone will notice big rooms
All that being said, you're doing a great build and have a fantastic attitude. What you're teaching kids is priceless! Bless you
Something I do when I am on my final sand is I will use a damp sponge and gently wipe the entire surface smooth, makes for a very flat wall.
Add a pinch of salt and two teaspoons of baking soda. It will rise a little more and fill in the low spots.
My tip would be to never put any leftover mud back in the bucket. Dry chunks get in the mix and cause divets You can add water and a few drops of Dawn soap to the bucket of mud and mix well. Makes for really smooth mud. Whipping the mud too much creates bubble and that’s not good so you have to work the mud on the wall more to get out the air. Def need screws every 6-8 inches.
You skimmed faster than I good, It might have taken m an hour or more!
Nice to see the Moose. Not much of a fan of skim coat, but good luck. Do it your way Martin. Down the road you will be happy of what you did.Merry Christmas Johnson family.
good job
Very nice
Good job! Merry Christmas y'all!
Use a large sponge to sand streaks- it fills and sands at the same time and no dust!
Merry Christmas family Johnson 🎅🎄🎁🎁 keep on going in 2020 with posting video's....love to watch 👍
Ooo guys you are really living so close to real nature .... that's beautiful ..... I think the animal is of the kind of ruminant one, meaning it is herbivore, ...
It needs a good mix in the bucket, and you can go back nearly before its dry to smooth out the lines.but its looking good well done
Happy Xmass and Merry Holidays!!
Bob please leave Christ in Christmas, remember Jesus is the reason for the season
Your not putting enough screws in the sheet rock, it may sag or start to rattle over time, 6 inch on the seams, 8 inch on the field.
Thanks you. I didn’t know.
check your gasoline filter often if you let it go dry there can be dirt in it over time good job on the drywall
Use dish soap not water to make it smooth
May the tenderness and hope of Christmas fill your hearts with love, peace, joy and happiness. Merry Christmas!
Martin you doing good when we make mistake is when we lean but look good have nice and wonderfull christmas and happy new year good bless the family best wishes.
I thought those mud functions as a feeler to all those crook n cranies to smoothen up, before apply undercoat and eventually a paint or paper wall later on. Anyway some progress have been made but I really hope the inspection wll commence shortly so you could finish it up altogether. Merry christmast ....
Y'all are doing a fantastic job!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Dave from Moira Ontario Canada
Great job. So nice to see all the progress. U guys rock!!
lots of thin coats, let dry 24 hours between coats, then use very very fine sandpaper if you want a painted smooth wall,
A damp sponge or rag used like sand paper will smooth out the mud finer than sand paper.

Have I ever skim coated before? No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Nice. I like that place.
Hawk and trowel would make that easier for ya...
Ok then thought I would be helpful. And suggest a few tips and tricks. But after reading some of the comments here. It appears there are.a house full of professional dry Waller’s but I will add a couple of items just for clarification... a proper level 5 finish is actually applied with thinned mud and a paint roller then scraped back off before it dries.. what a level 5 finish does is fill all the imperfections in the drywall itself.. I’d you have ever looked closely at a piece of Sheetrock it is not perfectly smooth that is what a level 5 finish does..if you have ever painted a wall and still been able to see where the joint is it’s peobably not because you did the joint wrong.. more then likely it’s because your joint is actually smoother then the Sheetrock and that is what a level 5 finish is for.. skim coat can be used to cover up fairly severe wall imprefecrions and or bad joints. It can also be used to cover up textures on walls and ceilings and return them to smooth with out tearing out and replacing the Sheetrock this is probably not helpful in anyway it’s just and explanation of the difference between a level 5 finish and skim coat and what they are used for what he is doing in this video is not an actual level 5 finish ... it is a skim coat
Hawk and trowel is the proper way of skimming a whole wall. If I see a pro skimming with those silly tools, I fell bad for their wrists. With a trowel you use your arm/shoulder muscles. Wrist adjusts the angle.
