    I'd pull as many of the floaters out and stack on higher ground to dry.
    Dig a trench from the lowest spot out to drain the lake.
    If you've got it stacked high enough to get through this winter, worry about relocating to higher ground next spring.

    When I paint bathrooms I just remove the water tank from the toilet. There is enough room to work. Don’t remove the bowl or you need a new wax seal unless you used the foam cushion seal for the bowl.

    1st thing I do when buying a “new to me” vehicle is I change out all the dome, courtesy, under hood, backup, & license plate lights with LED replacements. Lights are brighter, use nothing for energy… could leave all the interior lights on for days w/o draining the battery.

    The wood floating in the water is still good to burn once you pull it from the water and let the surface dry as the water can only get so far in without outside help or time.

  • @monicapttrsn
    @monicapttrsn 4 года назад

    I have an idea Martin. If you are in a bind with all that water, place a basic pump near the road or a low spot on the property (a good ways away from your comfort zone), maybe even put the pump in the pond. Run some hose pipe to the problem areas and turn the pump on to drain the water. Sometimes "The January Thaw" occurs for a couple of weeks, where it is around 50 degrees, so this could happen again. Hang in there!

  • @PCHSwS
    @PCHSwS 4 года назад +2

    Hey Martin, little tip from the comment section ;)
    When jumpstarting a car *always* connect the + side first! So when you drop the negative terminal you don't short the battery because the car frame is always connected to the negative terminal.

    • @staijo
      @staijo 3 года назад

      Also, connect the black cable to ground, ie the car frame. Batteries produce explosive gases, and if you are going to have a spark, you want it away from the explosive fumes. If you have a ground problem, the care is unlikely to start anyway.

    For the paint job, the glossier the paint ,the more you'll see imperfections, try a low sheen eggshell, you'll get a better finish and it is washable. The dirt stuck to the drywall is because of a dirty roller or dirty paint, you'll need to strain it. To fix it use a sander and repaint again. Brush marks is because the paint was to tick, needed a bit of water to thin it.

    • @royfollowell3927
      @royfollowell3927 4 года назад

      Dan Double Barrel. A cheap (inexpensive) way to strain the paint is to use a nylon knee high. If someone points out the flaws, just say you should have been here to supervise. Looks good.

    As for the imperfections in your drywall what happens when you sand Raw drywall you raise the fiber in the paper but it's not a problem after sanding take a wet sponge mop wipe it on the walls to lay the fiber down after the first coat of primer lightly sand the walls with 220 grit paper then put your final coat on being very careful to be smooth and not hit the floor so that you don't pull garbage off the floor back onto the walls make sure you back roll what you've currently painted so that your painted surface is not so thick in revealing

    That's one of my problems in the winter with roads that aren't plowed, if a truck comes down it the truck makes ruts and when it freezes, it tears all the bottom of your car, gas lines, breaj lines, mufler, gas tank, all because the truck tires are much higher, I hate it, my neighbor who lived down the road pass me dit this to me every winter, i moved!

    Fascinating build guys. Well done so far. Love to witness the snow and how you deal with it. We don't get snow in South Africa but temperatures in the central parts can occasionally get as low as -3 degrees Celsius (26F). Very dry here.

  • @monicapttrsn
    @monicapttrsn 4 года назад

    You will recover from the floating wood pile. We all forget to do this or that or make mistakes. But for the rest of your lives, the problem will be corrected....I wonder if a snow blower will help you clear a path and get the water moving. Experiencing the water mess, one can see why Building Codes want houses sitting on a grade of at least 6 inches higher than the normal ground, sloped for at least 10 ft from the house. Hopefully the ground around the water pools slope downward towards the road. If not, you can eventually build up this area with soil to cause a natural downward slope away from the lot. It's your first winter to discover where the problem areas are.......The walls are beautiful--very impressive for a rookie!

    • @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving
      @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving  4 года назад +1

      Thanks. Hopefully this summer we can grade the rest of the area near the house and keep water moving.

    You might consider getting your friend to come and push that slush out of the way before the ruts get frozen. Your walls are looking fine, there comes a time when being to critical is counter-productive. That wet sponge trick I mentioned in an earlier video would take care of a lot of those minor scratches. Don't get me wrong, Kilz is a great paint (good for covering mold, mildew) but it is thick. So as an undercoat it does tend to leave brush lines, you might try a thinner primer paint.

    Just a thought, might dig out for a tank in the biggest "puddle" areas to accumulate water as snow melts to use on the garden in summer. A small pump could pull it back up, saving the well for other important stuff in the house. With small wells and no rivers or streams, adding water to the place anyway you can counts.

If the ground isn't frozen excavate soil! Just a small trench will work we played in the snow as kids and built ice dams and ice viaduct to have small ice skating ponds..

    Usually it’s corrosion which causes the terminal to come loose but a phone charger left plugged in stays on all the time and will drain a battery in a heartbeat. You might be investing in a plow-you need a gutter / make shift to collect your rainwater into your water tote which will act as a settling tank to drop out the debris then pump it into your cistern tank. Rain water is incredibly soft and usually very clean and free! But for showers and toilet use is perfect if your worried about bird poo/bugs but most RO filtration systems with an ultra violet light bacteria cleaner will take care of stuff- check out RUclips life contained-love the kitchen and all the progress

    An alternator is not a battery charger. It is a tool made to keep a fully charged battery charged and supply the car with the electricity to run the functions, a battery can't. Put the battery on a charger over night. A voltage tester, battery should be 12 2 v, and running should be 13.7v to 15.2v. Turning on head lights, heater blower, it will drop, but should recoup instantly, if the alt. is good.

    Oh no... I’m so sorry. That looks like a lot work. And you guys got more snow than Buffalo. A snowblower might be a good investment? Especially for the long driveway like yours. Good luck! Best wishes!
